A Girl Like Lilac Kindle Edition
With a desperate need to protect her from a distance, one arrest turned to two, two soon turning into three, and before Toby knew what was happening, the sleepy village of Southwold was turning against him for daring to stand up for a girl like Lilac.
Beautiful Lilac with her flowers in her hair, her camera in her hands, and her sweet, pink, sugary-lipped kisses.
They could hate him for loving her all they wanted. Toby was a boy who did what was right, not what was easy, and he was always going to grow to be the man willing to give her what she deserved.
Even if that meant losing Lilac forever.

Deeply moving and insightful, it gave me the feels of all the truly great modern bildungsromans: The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Fault in Our Stars, The Art of Being Normal, Thirteen Reasons Why, The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden, and all the less famous hidden gems that are irreplaceable in my heart." - Katy's Book Ramblings
"It's hard to read something fresh nowadays. Some tropes have been done to death, and some, although certainly still entertaining, don't have the rawness their genre once had. This book turns all that on its head." - Literary Lust

- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2018After a couple cups of coffee and Kleenex boxes I’m finally ready to talk about A GIRL LIKE LILAC. I’m familiar with the author’s writing, but it’s amazing how she always surprises me with her characters. This time wasn’t different.
When I started to read I had no idea where everything was heading. I was into a teenage girl talking about life, magic, photography... and about Toby Hunter, the boy next door. The candid approach was sweet and made me smile. And then I smiled wider when I also had the chance to be into Toby's mind because that's a wonderful place to be.
Every turn of a page in this book was exciting, and I found myself wondering what would happen next. I was totally into the book, living the story through the characters eyes, loving with them, dreaming beside them, and having my heart broken the same way they did. And you know what? It was beautiful (probably because I'm kinda masochist or something).
Lilac and Toby’s love was made of something epic… something magical, so It’s OK to say that there’s magic in this book. A magical kind of love, that’s it. But this book isn’t a fairy-tale. But it isn’t a just tragedy either… It’s both and more, a comedy, a drama…, just like real life. Lilac and Toby’s book was heartbreaking, but beautiful and intense and… guys, it was perfect! It’s all I can think about this book: that it’s perfect.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2018This was a sweet coming of age story about childhood sweethearts who lived next door to each other. Toby Hunter has always watched Lilac Clarke. She fascinates him with her free spirit and how she marches to the beat of her own drum, never conforming to anything unless it suits her. Lilac has a very optimistic and sunny attitude, always finding the good in everything. Toby is very reserved and quiet, always hidden in the background as an observer while looking after his mother. He doesn't like to make his presence known, but when it comes to Lilac, he becomes a fierce protector.
The writing is poetic with so many insightful and illuminating passages full of sage advice and wisdom. There wasn't a lot of angst because Lilac and Toby are not those kind of people, but there was plenty of drama to move the story forward and to develop the characters. The twists and turns kept me on the edge of waiting to see what would happen next. Lilac and Toby's story is the kind that brightens up the world knowing there are everyday people like them who stand up for what they believe and don't give up at any cost when it comes to their loved ones.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2020MY HEART, THIS BOOK!!!! It’s rare that I read a love story and can find so many things I adore about both the leading characters but Toby and Lilac were both so special in their own ways and left an imprint on my heart. Their love was epic and all consuming and really just something that pulled me into the pages. I sobbed through my coffee this morning finishing A Girl Like Lilac yet here I am hours later still thinking about it and feeling emotional. In the endnote from the author she said “The only fairy tales to exist are fairy tales. Your life isn’t meant to be one. It’s meant to be a tragedy, a romance, and a comedy you survive, thrive, and remember” - No truer words could be spoken and could encompass the feeling behind this whole beautiful book. James didn’t shy away from the bruised and broken pieces of these characters or the unfairness that is the world we live in but rather she leaned into it evoking every single emotion within these pages.

What a touching love story of first love and second chances. Lilac is full of energy and life. Toby has been secretly admiring his neighbor, Lilac, for years but also carries a heavy burden with family dynamics. I love how much Toby protects Lilac that he is willing to give up all his freedom to keep her safe and happy.
This book is best to just go in blind but know it will give you all the feels.
I want to call a few of my favorite chapters - CH 31 - Toby *Sigh* and the epilogue just left you feeling very satisfied and happy for the couple.
One minor personal call out - I wish Lilac's love of photography played more of a role in the story especially with that prologue.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2020This was a new to me author, I’d never read anything of hers previously.
Without spoilers...I had figured out pretty early on what happened. They still didn’t stop the hurt and pain when my suspicions were confirmed.
Toby and Lilac’s love is the stuff of fairytales.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2020I really liked this book. This author has a way of pulling you into the story and you become immersed in the characters and really feel for them. Lilac and Toby were drawn to each other from an early age and it was lovely to see how their relationship progressed despite the obstacles thrown their way. You couldn’t help but feel the emotions of the characters and I love when a writer can do that. You get totally caught up in the world they have created. Would definitely recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written
This book was a recommendation from a friend and I really don't know how to review this story.
First if all, it's a beautiful story. It's about Lilac and Toby and their pure and deep love for each other. It's about a girl and a boy falling in love and rescue each other. Because there's a lot going on in their lives. They are both weak but also so strong. I love the connection they have, nothing is able to tear them apart. Their feelings for each other are stronger than all that happens. Toby is Lilacs protector, but Lilac also protects the love of her life. They are equals and that's the real beauty of their relationship and their love.
Warning, spoiler!:
What I didn't like, or better don't understand, is, that Lilac turned to Chris. That was the one moment where I was not sure of her feelings for Toby. She shouldn't have given up on him (because that's what she did in this moment). She should have demanded answers to make the right decisions. I was a little bit disappointed in her. And I was so sad for Toby, who also handled this situation wrong. But his intentions where to keep her save. Her's I don't understand.
In the end I'm glad they could work things out, I'm really glad that their love for each other is so deep, that they had the power to stand through all the shit that happened and that they were able to get through the separation they had to endure.
This story is beautifully written with a lot of wisdom and small doses of poetry. The author was able to capture me with her beautiful words, the twists in the story and the surprising ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars A huge 5 stars from me!
I have a lot of books by Victoria L James on my TBR list, but I've never managed to find time to read them. When A Girl Like Lilac was released I saw so many people saying how good it was that I decided to grab myself a copy and see what all the fuss was about! So, A Girl Like Lilac is the first of Victoria L James's books that I’ve read and now I know I need to read more of her work!!
A Girl Like Lilac is a coming of age story like none other than I’ve read. It's clear that there has been a lot of thought, care and attention devoted to this book and characters. The characters are far from being perfect, they are flawed which only proves that they are human, as no one is perfect. This is a very real story not only does A Girl Like Lilac portrays a story of love, it highlights the real-life issues and struggles that we all live through and deal with.
Toby and Lilac are put through so much in this book and I felt like I was every bit a part of this journey. I enjoyed every bit of Toby and Lilac’s lives that I was privileged to be a part of. A Girl Like Lilac is an emotional story and a true rollercoaster ride. I felt every emotion as if it was one of my own, and the emotions that were my own were fitting for what I was reading.
The authors writing style has shown me just how talented an author she truly is. This story was a truly amazing display of friendship, love and life. I was hooked from the very first page and the more I read the further into Toby and Lilac’s lives I was drawn.
A Girl Like Lilac for me was, no, is a fantastic, beautiful and emotional story, one that I will not be forgetting in a hurry!
I'm so glad that I’ve read this book and I now can't wait to read more of
this author's work!
If you're looking for an emotional, romantic, realistic coming of age story, then I strongly recommend reading A Girl Like Lilac!

4.0 out of 5 stars Second half is fast paced and gripping
I thoroughly enjoyed this YA/NA novel. At first it seemed like a simple love story with a couple of antagonists and then the secrets of the past came out and the second half of the story had much more drama and pace and I couldn't put it down.
Lilac is quirky and doesn't feel the need to fit in with the crowd, Toby is her almost friend who takes a protective stance. He watches from a distance but holds himself back and lets other people get closer to her, thinking he is unworthy of this chance.
there is some violence and some possible triggers for people. Lilac and Toby really have to work to get their HEA, but the epilogue was very sweet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!! Wunderschöne Liebesgeschichte
Beautiful story. 4,5* . Victoria James is a master with her words. Unbelievable how strong Toby's and Lilacs love was.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my Fav's
The catchy blurb and pretty cover pulled me in initially, and then I began to read- I don't get much time to read per se these days, I usually listen to audiobooks while I go about my day- but I was hooked from page one and was compelled to sit up till 3am until I finished! The dialogue in this book is spectacular, add that to the perfectly woven plot, and creative characterisation of Toby and Lilac and you have one cannot-put-down, absolute must-read-of-a-book that is right up there with Nicholas Sparks- The Notebook. It's raw, it's gritty, it's just beautiful. Here is an author who isn't afraid to address real-life issues and situations that many coming-of-age novels avoid, and yet tackles them with sensitivity and empathy through her characters. I defy anyone not to fall in love with Lilac and Toby's tragically beautiful tale. It has earned a place as one of my favourite reads this year.
