A Lesson in Thorns (Thornchapel) Paperback – March 20, 2019

4.3 out of 5 stars 2,858 ratings

When librarian Poe Markham takes the job at Thornchapel, she only wants two things: to stay away from Thornchapel’s tortured owner, Auden Guest, and to find out what happened to her mother twelve years ago. It should be easy enough—keep her head down while she works in the house’s crumbling private library and while she hunts down any information as to why this remote manor tucked into the fog-shrouded moors would be the last place her mother was seen alive. But Thornchapel has other plans for her...

As Poe begins uncovering the house’s secrets, both new and old, she’s also pulled into the seductive, elegant world of Auden and his friends—and drawn to Auden’s worst enemy, the beautiful and brooding St. Sebastian. And as Thornchapel slowly tightens its coil of truths and lies around them, Poe, Auden and St. Sebastian start unravelling into filthy, holy pleasure and pain. Together, they awaken a fate that will either anoint them or leave them in ashes…

From the author of the USA Today bestselling New Camelot series comes an original fairy tale full of ancient mysteries, lantern-lit rituals, jealousy, money, murder, sacred torment, and obsessions that last for lifetimes...

Gothic, steamy, and atmospheric!
3.5⭐️ 4🌶 A Lesson in Thorns is an erotic, gothic story following Proserpina (Poe, for short) and her childhood friends as they navigate their return to Thornchapel manor. I absolutely LOVED the vibes of this book. Sierra Simone's writing, as usual, had me hooked from the very beginning. It's atmospheric, dark, mysterious, and you can almost feel phantom breezes dance along your skin as you read. I got really attached to the scenery and the manor very quickly and it kept me turning the pages. Most of the story is told in first person POV from Proserpina with splashes of third person POV for other characters. I basked in the flow of perspectives and felt that it added a lot to the mystery and emotion. I'm sad that I didn't feel a very strong connection to most of the characters. Proserpina, first and foremost. I liked her, but I found myself wishing I was in anyone else's POV at certain points of the book. And while I love a good why-choose romance, the connections between the main characters (there are six of them) left me wanting. Once I reached the end of the book, I looked back and recognized that the pacing had been throwing me off. So much happened in the last few chapters, we're left on a cliffhanger, and I immediately wanted more. I just wish I felt more of that from the beginning. The plot also felt very "convenient" and while I loved that for the characters, I only "liked" it for me. All that to say, I will definitely be reading book Feast of Sparks, which I've already started. Bring it on, St. Sebastian!

QUOTE: I have the same feeling looking at him as I do looking at the winter moors and leafless forests. I’m fascinated, I’m drawn, I want to touch all that loneliness with my bare fingertips and take it inside of myself.

It’s official—I, too, am now dying to know all of Thornchapel’s secrets!!! What an exceptionally entertaining storyline Sierra Simone has begun with the Thornchapel series. But before I dive too deeply into this review, a personal note: as a reader, I generally read very few reviews myself before diving into books because I worry about spoilers—therefore, I can assure you this review provides none.

QUOTE: I think I might be burning alive from those eyes. Burning alive like a saint tied to a stake.

I absolutely love the skill with which Sierra Simone pens a story—most recently, the Thornchapel books. A Lesson in Thorns is unlike anything I’ve ever read before. It’s the story of six individuals—Auden, Poe, Saint, Rebecca, Delphine and Beckett—whose lives were unequivocally altered after a summer at Thornchapel when they were preteens. The story is fraught with secrets, heartbreak, uncertainty, love, lust, and self-discovery. Having read it now, I can understand that this is not a story that would have ever been able to be fully explored within the confines of one book. It offered new insight into how the series will be written over four books instead of a duet or a trilogy.

QUOTE: I hate that at Thornchapel, I’m both not myself and more myself than I’ve ever been.

A Lesson in Thorns, while told predominately from Poe’s POV, does illustrate the past and the present from the mindsets of all six characters. I’m usually not a fan of flashbacks, but when used correctly, they don’t detract from a story. In the case of A Lesson in Thorns, the flashbacks were done in such a way that they enhanced the story brilliantly and gave context and depth to the characters. The plot was a little slow to unfold, and honestly, I still have zero idea what’s going to come next for the characters. Unlike bloggers who read these as they were released months apart, I was lucky enough to binge read A Lesson in Thornes and Feast of Sparks (Thornchapel, #2) back to back. Now I’m absolutely dying to get my hands on the third book, Harvest of Sighs.

QUOTE: He’s waking up. He’s becoming himself. God help me when he’s fully awake. I’ll have no defenses against him. I won’t want any.

Now after nearly a week, I’m still obsessed with Thornchapel and A Lesson in Thorns. And while I write reviews for books daily, I’ve been struggling to put words to paper for this one. Partially, because I want to provide very little context to the story itself so as not to ruin it for someone. But also, if you’ve never read Simone’s books, you’ve truly never experienced dirty romance that extraordinarily sexy. 😉 Sierra Simone writes with a prose that is equally evocative, exquisite, and erotic. Her stories are full of vivid imagery with storylines that are tantalizing and complex. Truth be told, I often joke with my friends (when asked what I am reading) that it’s ‘Mommy Porn’ but to be clear, I’ve never watched porn that was written with such elegance, skill, or attention to detail. 😊 Yet, Simone’s stories are all written with this and so much more. Not everyone is a fan of Simon’s storytelling though, so a word of caution: if you are a not a fan of BDSM, ménage, dark romance or pagan traditions; or if you’re someone who skims the sexy times in favor of a sweeter storyline, then steering clear of a Sierra Simone story is probably for the best. However, if you’re open to reading an author who pushes you out of your comfort zone and unreservedly pushes your moral boundaries, then look no farther. Sierra Simone is going to awaken your senses in the same manner E.L. James awoke a sleeping giant in erotic romance with her Fifty Shades series. I personally am desperate for more of the Thornchapel series and can’t recommend A Lesson in Thorns enough!!

“I feel like an overgrown garden, lush and crowded, rioted and jumbled, except instead of leaves and roots and petals, I’m jealousy and hunger and pain and thrill. All the bitter and all the sweet, all mixed together.” - A Lesson in Thorns.

REVIEW: This is the first of what will be four books of the Thornchapel series. And oh my god, what a sexy, fun, mysterious book this is. I was hesitant going into this book because I have read some “erotica” books that are very cheesy and not at all sexy or interesting. What I loved about this book is that there is a mystery at the center of it, and quite a bit of plot mixed in with some sexy moments. Although, it is definitely not for the meek. There are several graphic sex scenes involving multiple characters, and also a lot of dabbling in BDSM. What I do appreciate also is that there is a lot of talk about consent in this book too, which I feel like a lot of other titles often leave out. I originally picked up this book because I have been reading a lot of heavier, sad books recently and I wanted sometime a bit more fun and sexy. Although this book has a “dark” tone around it, it was just what I was looking for.

The characters in this book were all so different and unique. They all have a history with one another and their relationships are all very interesting. I also like how it is easy to remember who is who, and to tell them all a part because of their different personalities. I am looking forward to seeing them develop more in the coming books as this was just a starting point.

I thought the writing in this book was also fantastic. It was very descriptive and somewhat beautiful at moments? There were many quotes that I just loved. In my (limited) experience with erotica books I haven’t found this to be common either, so this definitely stands out to me. Overall, I love how dark, mysterious, and culty / cult-like (real?) this book is. I think it has some of my favorite things in it really, which just makes it perfect for me. Okay, off I go now to immediately jump into reading the second book. I need to know what happens next!

I feel like this is the type of book you need to go in somewhat blind so I’m not getting super descriptive but picture this, 6 friends doing kinky ancient rituals 👀

I read this when it first came out but I’ve been wanting to listen to it on audio and it did not disappoint!! The narrator was great! I loved the angst and mystery. It was not lacking in spice but it still had a good amount of story. The intrigue of the manor, secrets to be uncovered, and love triangle sucked me right back in again. While everyone kind of sleeps with everyone, you can tell who is going to end up together or at least I could since I’ve read it before lol. I’m not in love with ff scenes but I feel like she does them the best of any that I’ve read.

I definitely recommend it if the tropes sound interesting to you! I’ve never been let down by any of her books book lol. I’m excited to continue rereading this series!

    🥀 kinky af
    🥀 enemies to lovers

4.0 out of 5 stars Weird and fun and deliciously, shamelessly horny
Reviewed in Germany on July 2, 2019
Oh man oh wow, I'm not sure how to summarize my feelings about this books. It was a WILD ride.

I buddy read this with a friend and that probably was a big reason for why I enjoyed it so much! There is so much DRAMA and MYSTERIQUE and ICONIC LINES that made me scream and laugh and gape, so I'm really glad I had someone to discuss all this with!!!

Ultimately A Lesson in Thorns was a book with quite a few flaws and some very weird details, but it also had wonderful conversations about many important topics, a very queer and diverse cast and it was a lot of fun to read.

Content warnings include: sex on-page, BDSM (impact play, D/s, pain and blood play), pagan and christian rituals; mentions of: past rape (with rather graphic descriptions), parent vanishing and abandoning child, child abuse, injury and broken bones.

Despite my ultimate rather positive feelings about this book, I had a rough start with it. The prologue is long, way longer than it should be in my opinion, and while it was atmospheric I very quickly grew tired of it. There were wayyyy too many descriptions of stones, flowers, plants and houses.

I generally had a hard time getting into the writing style. It was almost flowery at parts, very abstract and vague in wanting to describe how the characters feel in the almost magical heavy atmosphere of Thornchapel.... and it completely missed me. I was constantly wondering WHY ????? Which was only made worse by how I had to read some sentences twice to understand what was going on.
Sometimes the choice of words was weird too. Why this focus on how "male" everything related to the male characters was??? It was totally redudant and felt forced and awkward, especially since they are all cis. And for the love of god, just use d*ck or c*ck or pen*s, I do never want to read "thick rigid organ" with my own two eyes ever again.
In the end I did get used to the style. Most of it is told in first person present, with a few chapters in third person present, which took some time to get used to but those ended up being my favourite chapters since they showed the POV of the other characters.

I also had some trouble getting into Poe, the main POV protagonist. She had a certain flair for the dramatic, and in the beginning there were several parts where I was sure this would turn south - like half a page going on about how she doesn't blow dry her hair, or how she was never as pretty as the other girls.

I got big YA vibes from the book, which it is very definitely NOT. It's adult or probably NA. Still, some parts felt very much like YA, which messed with my perception of the characters. At times they felt like teens and I had to constantly remind myself that they were all in their twenties. It was all just so over the top, with the above mentioned scenes about Poe comparing herself to the other girls, or how she can tell nobody about something because "it will make her less", or her falling over and conveniently landing right between the two boys she's fancying.... it felt a bit like a bad romcom.

Then there's all the internalized shame. There was SO MUCH OF IT, and I DID NOT LIKE THAT. It starts with Poe's narcolepsy (ownvoice rep for that!!!) which she's ashamed about. Other than the beginning, it's barely mentioned again though.
But the shame thematic is most prominent when it comes to sex. Because these kids (I know they are not really kids, but bear with me addressing them like this as a group) are HORNY. Like, REALLY REALLY HORNY. ALL the time!!!!!
But they don't really like that. Poe frequently calls herself a sex monster for all the sexual fantasies she has, which, meh, yet at the same time, she's also perfectly fine with regular masturbation (which, yay, more casual masturbation for girls in books!!!) and she has been aware of her sexual preference for submission and punishment for a while now and regularly scenes and goes to clubs. I did like how sure Poe was sure about what she wants (and what she didn't want so far!) but I hated whenever her shame came up again (and I'm not talking about the good shame of humiliation that gets her going.)

But most of these things shifted. I'm not sure if things really changed or if I just managed to shut off my brain and enjoy the ride. But at some point I just went with it all, and that was when I began to really enjoy this book.

Yes, it was needlessly dramatic, and over the top, but it was also gloriously shameless and self-indulgent, enthusiastic and gleeful in how these six young adults lust after each other and end up in situations that puts their lust on display in the most delicious way.

So many scenes were just incredibly fun to read, and pepped in it all were wonderful conversations about sex and kink and friendship and love, faith and the harmful constructs of virginity and heteronormativity that were taken apart and discussed in depth.
There were funny and poignant scenes about so many different topics!

It was also definitely the start of a series. So many things are going on in the background and not all of them are explained, especially with the whole mystery around Thornchapel. There is history in the place where they are, between the characters, and between their parents, and to be honest, most things are still unanswered as of the end of A Lesson in Thorns.
I'm definitely looking forward to the next book and visiting these characters again!
