All Lessons Learned: A classic mystery romance (Cambridge Fellows Book 8) Kindle Edition
The Great War is over. Freed from a prisoner of war camp and back at St. Bride’s College, Orlando Coppersmith is discovering what those years have cost....
All he holds dear—including his beloved Jonty Stewart, lost in combat.
Then a commission to investigate a young officer’s disappearance temporarily gives Orlando new direction... The deceptively simple case becomes a maze of conflicting stories—is Daniel McNeil a deserter, or a hero?—taking Orlando into the world of the shell-shocked and broken. And his sense of Jonty’s absence becomes painfully acute. Especially when a brief spark of attraction for a Cambridge historian, instead of offering comfort, triggers overwhelming guilt.
As he hovers on the brink of despair, a chance encounter on the French seafront at Cabourg brings new hope and unexpected joy. But the crushing after-effects of war could destroy his second chance, leaving him more lost and alone than ever…

This review focuses on the entirety of the series of books comprising the Cambridge Fellows stories written by Charlie Cochrane.
I purchased the first of the 12 stories/books nearly 6 years ago. I was reminded of it at the end of 2022 which prompted me to begin reading it. After reading this first story/book, I found I was intrigued with the characters.
I also love the feeling authenticity that seemed to reflect the time period for each of the books. There was a consistent and constant reminder that societal values were very different about so many things and in particular about same-sex relationships.
These stories/books use England for the location of the activities of the characters with a few exceptions (won’t provide any spoilers for those of you in the process of reading your way through the series).
I found the characters believable—yes, there were bits of the individual stories that I thought some of the unique qualities (perhaps quirks) of the principal characters were a tad bit over the top or annoying. Nevertheless the author pulls back before one feels repelled and keeps the specific story line moving forward.
For the most part, the conclusions or solutions identified seemed reasonable, believable and acceptable. There were certain stories where the conclusion seemed to have a feel of being pushed by perhaps a deadline that that the author may have been working under. While these conclusions did leave an uncertainty in my mind, the conclusion did not detract from the overall enjoyment of the book.
Frankly, I believe the order or sequence of the books in this series should be based on the chronological date for the characters rather than the actual date written by the author. Once I was nearing the end of the 12 books I discovered that the author opted to return to earlier periods.
Again without spoiling the story line of any of the books, I found that Book 8—at least the postscript it has—should have been reserved for the final book using the suggestion that order of the series be adjusted to use the last chronologically date of the characters’ experiences. This would seem to be Book 12 if I have recalled the dates of each of the books properly.
I was particularly touched with Book 8 and how the principal characters cope with the changes in the world and specifically the impact on them as individuals and as a couple.
I commend Charlie Cochrane on her portrayal of the characters dealing with their same-sex relationship in a period where in it was unaccepted. At times I feel that Coppersmith’s struggles with himself and the relationship nearly reaches that line where it seems unreasonable—yet I had to remind myself that everyone struggles with their sexual identity differently.
Overall I will be a bit sad to bid adieu to these characters as I have enjoyed the various stories which have kept me company over the last several months. In my mind, this could easily become a wonderful TV or streaming series but given the same-sex relationship, even in these days of 2023 I have to wonder whether society has really progressed that far to tolerate a touching series with a same-sex set of characters.
Having lived through the 1960s onward and knowing the kind of treatment the LGBTQ+ community has had to deal with, I may have a more jaundiced eye on our current society than others.
As noted earlier, I found this series of books/stories entertaining, witty and with well-written characters as well as plots.
I think any reader would enjoy these assuming the reader is accepting of a same-sex couple as the primary characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWWI has ended but things are never going to be "normal" in society or in the separate lives of Jonty and Orlando. Each believes the other died in the war and tries to carry on in their misery in Cambridge and in France. Orlando vows to end his life Normandy but instead finds Jonty and they fight their way back to a healing but uncertain future. This is a wonderful but tearful book and I for one cried but was very happy with the ending. This has been a terrific series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2015Another good entry in the series. Some of the story was a little too coincidental even for me, but I don't care. The mcs are easy to like, and the old English words are just an added amusement. I think the author has influenced my dialogue.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2011This book kept me crying from the very first page. Dear sweet Jonty gone. It just wasn't possible. Each page of this book rips at your heart and shows you what love really is. Just as Charlie Cochrane said don't jump to conclusions, don't! I will say that even when for Orlando the impossble happened, the story still brought tears to my eyes.
If you have not read the other books in this series, go back right now and start from book 1. Each book brings more growth and depth to both of the beloved main characters. And the additional characters that are developed come to be loved too. This is the story of two men who strive to keep their love alive through some of the most horendous times told in a classic way. The attention to detail in everything to historical data from Edwardian dress and language is profound. Spanning the time period of 1905 to 1961 this is the beautiful love story of two beautiful souls meant to share a lifetime of happiness.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2011The blurb for this book is rather dark, and beginning with the knowledge that Jonty-- sweet, sunny Jonty-- is dead, might be off putting to some who love the series and these wonderful characters, but as Cochrane herself says, don't jump to conclusions. Really, don't.
There is a mystery in this book, but it takes a back seat to the main story, about people dealing with loss, grief, and guilt in the aftermath of the War to End All Wars. Finishing this series (to date) very much reminded me of Waugh's Brideshead Revisited, with the halcyon early days, and the darker, more mature later years.
While this is very different book than earlier ones, it's equally engrossing and has a healthy dose of Cochrane's tastefully done hanky panky, too. A must read for all who love Jonty and Orlando.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseJust when I think this series can’t get any better, I read the next one and am enchanted once again. Jonty and Orlando are two of my favorite characters by far and this lovely story will tear at your heartstrings. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2016So happy to discover dear Jonty & Orlando kept their flame keep burning into the 60's. I'd love to see Ben Cumberbatch play Coppersmith on stage in London someday!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2014This was definitely the most emotional entry in the series so far. Recovering from the war, dealing with loss, trying to return to "normal" life, and a mystery that seems to embody all those elements as well. Definitely a multi-hankie read. Not much I can say about this one other than it plays havoc on your heart, even pretty much knowing what the outcome will be from the very beginning. A true example of how the greatness of a story isn't always in where it ends but the getting there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking, but wonderful
This appears to be the last in the Cambridge Mystery series, and I think it's one of the best. It's very different in tone and style to the others though. It's 1919, and Orlando has returned to St Brides from the Great War, bereft and alone. His beloved Jonty died somewhere in the hell of Flanders. He can't even grieve properly, because no-one there knows of their love.
A new investigation gives him a renewed purpose in life, but will he ever find peace and happiness again? All I can say is that there is a very satisfying ending.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed this book. Well written story and the characters are well defined. It was sad that some characters have disappeared, but this fitted well into the story. Jonty and Orlando were in fine form and I would highly recommend this book

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a poignant and beautiful novel that bears comparison to those other novels of the Great War by Pat Barker and Sebastian Faulds. The horror of war and its impact on survivors is acutely realised, it does not preach or condemn human frailties, but understands them, and the characters become real in Charlie Cochrane's hands. Very highly recommended.
