    This novel was a good read. The plot had a sort of gothic flavor: An American girl (Cassie Vale) gets a job as an au pair in a rural town in France working for a mysterious family. While living in the families’ luxurious chateau, her room is trashed, her passport stolen, & her anti-anxiety medications crushed to powder. She begins to have strange dreams, sometimes awakening out of her bed. The children are rude & disrespectful. The patriarch, Pierre Dubois, makes passes at her, trying to extort her into doing his will. Pierre’s “fiancee” Margot slaps Cassie in the face when she talks back to her on Cassie’s first day on the job.
    This novel was full of mystery & intrigue. I couldn’t put it down.
    I’ve never read any novels by Ophelia Night, & will be reading book 2 in this series, & have pre-ordered book 3. From what I understand, this is Ms. Night’s first novel. Book 1 is definitely worth reading!

    This is a bit of a departure from the usual Blake Pierce fare. The narrator is (of course) traumatized, but then it deviates, with the narrator being medicated and unsure of her memory (but not an unreliable narrator in the literary sense). Almost all other significant characters are deeply unpleasant and disturbed, making this a joyless read. The resolution is a bit of a deus ex machina along with some unethical behaviour passed off as ethical.

    The plot is pretty simple: Cassie, an au pair with a history of being abused, ends up in an abusive family and has to fight to survive.

    I'd recommend this one for readers who don't already get enough of human wickedness from the news.

    When you think that life cannot get better, Blake Pierce come up with another masterpiece of thriller, suspense and mystery!

    This time the story evolves around a young lady that goes to the French countryside, close to Paris, to work for a family as an au pair.
    It is amazing how the author develops the characters, mainly their psychological aspects. He involves us in the story and suddenly we are feeling all the emotions that our heroine is feeling and we start cheering for her and suffering when she is repeatedly abused by her employers and their children. The book is full of twists and the end brings a surprising revelation.
    I strongly recommend this book to the permanent library of any reader that enjoys a very well written thriller. You will not be disappointed. And I cannot wait to put my hands on volumes 2 and 3 of this series.
    This is the second book I read from this author and I intent to read many more from his other series!

    The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.

    ALMOST GONE Blake Pierce Cassie accepts a position as an au-pair for a wealthy family living in a château outside of Paris. Cassie must deal with this dysfunctional family consisting of the adulterous father, the snobbish fiancée and the three spoiled and incorrigible children while coping with her own anxiety of a recent abusive relationship. We learn about the recent death of the children’s mother and the discovered death of the fiancée. Who and why?? All of this took place in three days! I was hopeful for this one but it fell flat with me. It seemed to be another ‘who better to take the blame for the crime than the new arrival’ especially one who was found to take anxiety medications. She surprisingly even started to doubt herself. Oh My!! I found the story-line lame and amateurishly written with a lack of depth. You could totally forget it was set in France as it had no correlation or mention of the French countryside, language or culture. I couldn’t imagine continuing with this series. I don't understand the higher ratings for this book.
