His Shield: an M/M Second Chance Romance (J.T's Bar Book 1) Kindle Edition
Will Jake live long enough to get a second chance at a happy ever after with the man he walked away from without a word?
Two years ago, broken by his sister’s murder by her husband, Jake Tyler walked out of Covert Ops, leaving behind his team and his ex-lover, Mitch Mitchelson.
The last thing Jake Tyler expects is his former team led by Mitch to turn up in his rural bar with grim news. Jake’s ex-brother-in-law has escaped from prison and is heading Jake’s way. The team is here to protect Jake, whether he likes it or not.
Mitch is angry and hurting. Jake never gave Mitch a chance to help him. He just left Mitch without a word. Mitch isn’t about to open his heart again to that kind of pain.
The strong passion between them still burns hot. But are they ever going to work together when Mitch still resents Jake’s disappearance, and to Jake, the team represents everything that destroyed him in the first place?
And in the meantime they wait for Riley to find them…

- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2019Being part of a covert team means you live in each other's pockets and you become a family. In Jake and Riley's case they even became brother-in-laws. And life was perfect until it wasn't. Jake found Riley standing over the dead body of his sister holding a bloody knife. In that instance everything changed for them and the team. Now it's years later and an accident has freed Riley to an escape from prison and everyone is positive he's headed to Riley!
Friends, ex-lovers, and murderers seem to be converging on Jake's bar in Wyoming. One way or another answers will be discovered by everyone there!
This is a tension filled story of friendship, family, love, loss, trust and grief. But especially hope. All beautifully wrapped in a romance. The characters come alive in front of you through a skillfully developed plot.
A wonderful book that will have you cheering for justice and the good guys.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2017After JT's sister is brutally murdered and he finds his brother-in-law at the scene of the crime, standing over her body... he gets him convicted and hits the road...leaving his team, his partner and his old life as a spec. ops commando, behind. Settling in a nowhere town Wyoming, he opens a bar and stays off the grid. Unfortunately, or fortunatley, his old team comes knocking when the brother in law escapes from prison, determined to find him.
Now, I dunno why everyone is reacting so negatively to this one, I knew exactly what the brother in law wanted the second they said he was coming for JT.... I'm surprised these super intellegent dudes didn't realize, especially when the majority of them suspected his innocence all along. Why he went to such lengths to do it and the way in which he did, was a smidge unbelievable, but it's a story.... come on.... it made it interesting and you've gotta admit, you've all read something more unbelieveable, I'm positive of it. It was still an awesome story!
I loved Mitch and JT together, I thought they had amazing chemistry and hurt for them that they'd lost so much time, although I do understand why JT left and why Mitch let him stay gone for so long. They made up for it eventually!
I also loved the secondary characters and how big of a family they all were. I loved Si and Howie's development because I hated it for Howie that he was hurt by Jake and Mitch, but mostly Jake.
I can't wait to read the next one and am excited that it's already out LOL I can jump right in.
4 stars for me with this one.... I really enjoyed it!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2025Mitch and Jake...A rollercoaster ride from word one til the last!!!😋 Crazy suspenseful! The tight coil of a complex plot will wind around your gut as soon as Jake enters onto the page. His pain and anger bleed all over you. Enter Mitch and the team and you have a mess of emotions and turmoil. They are stupid hot and you will be burned! But as the story evolves you become tightly cooked and base you can't wait to snap!!!😘 I highly recommend this truly well constructed universe with such in-depth characters!!!😁
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2020I would rate this 3 stars
After J.T.'s sister Sharon is murdered, he resigns from a covert ops organization. Riley, his best friend since grade school and Sharon's husband, goes to prison while JT just leaves his whole life behind, including his boyfriend Mitch and starts going by the name Jake. With the loss of Riley and Jake, the whole team crumbles as even two years later half the team thinks Riley is guilty, and half think he's innocent. When Riley escapes from prison and makes his way to the bar, is he there to kill Jake, or something else?
Most of the characters are all veterans and ex or current law enforcement except for Howie, the bar's co-owner. Jake seems a little clumsy for an elite ex-soldier. His abandoning his boyfriend without a word is a source of conflict for me. The one thing Jake and Mitch do right is sex, the talking not so much; even at the end of this I am not convinced they can have a mature adult conversation about their feelings. The other team members (Del, Si, and Ruiz) just seem to take this all in their stride and forgive Jake for disappearing, or at least there isn't anything that shows differently. There is also a side insta-lust romance with Howie and Si. The foreshadowing is a little clumsy all heading towards a confrontation with the bad guy with a suprise plot twist coming out of nowhere. As a short novella, this is just a bunch of fun--nothing too detailed or angsty, with some mildly spicy sex scenes.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2025A trauma sent him into personal hiding and the loss of his found family. Finding out that he was wrong to leave his life behind. Righting the wrong could get him and his former team killed. Can he get his best friend back, alive ?
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2020I received a free copy of Alpha Protect and that started me on this series. I’m glad I found it and after going back and starting to read the rest of the series I have to say this story sure is a contender for the best of the series in my opinion. There is so much emotion here. Plenty of action going on also. Mitch and Jake just fit but circumstance causes them to sort of break up. Jake feels he lost everything and has to start new. I love when two alpha men are in a relationship. After I started this story I could not set it down. There is heartbreak and heartwarming parts. There are parts when I wanted to yell. The secondary characters play such a big part. The characters are well developed. The story flow is great. This is just one of those stories that will be on my read again and again list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific story line
This wasn't your typical story line. There was action, mystery and romance. I found myself feeling for the characters and hoping for a good outcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Protection, Shooting, Bar Drinking, Teamworking, Second chance Love
Military trained guys with Team Spirit. Investigations to clear a murder case. Past lovers getting a second chance. Nice two hour read. I really loved the teams dynamic and got more than one giggle.

Another book with the right mix of mystery, angst and suspense.
I really hope this will be the beginning of another series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good enough
Book is a good read, but it gets a bit boring and has some loopholes here and there. The ending was a bit disappointing. It is just a book you read only once.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read
I enjoyed meeting the team and seeing Jake and Mitch interact. The story covered a lot of ground; sometimes quickly and sometimes slowly - which fitted with the pace of the action, but was occasionally not easy to read through. Possibly me not the writing! I felt the solution to the relationship problem was a little rushed - perfectly reasonable and logical but the emotional conflict, if any, was off page.
