4.0 out of 5 stars 38 ratings

Blood flows where magic fears to tread.

For centuries, the city of Ormere has existed on a knife’s edge. A band of outlaws known as the Amaranthine has kept the peace while the Order of Sorcerers disperses their dark magic amongst the city’s people.

But Agent Kaylan Avilion won’t stand for it. Still dealing with the grief over her murdered family, it’s up to Kaylan to protect the city she loves. But when an attempted sting on a criminal sorcerer goes bad, Kaylan’s fiancé Elijah pays the tragic consequences.

Kaylan’s overwhelming sorrow is replaced by shock when she realises that Elijah isn’t really dead. He’s alive and under the spell of the Order of Sorcerers, and they won’t rest until they find a dangerous artefact that holds the key to Kaylan’s tragic past.

And when her sister Freya goes missing, Kaylan pulls out all the stops to find her and Elijah. But Elijah has been keeping a secret from Kaylan, and it just may be enough to tear them apart… again.

Disclaimer: I received a free ARC copy of The Amaranthine Chronicles by Tiffany Shand for a fair and honest review. I tried to write a spoiler-free review, but if you just want to know my rating without any additional details, I think it is a fun collection and well worth your time if you like urban fantasy, romance, and adventure.

    Potential Spoilers Ahead

I have not read anything by Tiffany Shand before this collection. A fellow author recommended her work to me, so I signed up for the ARC (advanced reader copy) review. I am very glad I had the chance to read this collection and share my thoughts (in no particular order.)

The first aspect to impress me was the cover. Yes—I know the old saying “never judge a book by its cover,” but so many collections seem to feature one image repeated with different color schemes. I like the fact that the author took the time to create separate cover art for each of the three novellas and to include all of them in the collection. This attention to detail right at the start is impressive.

Second—I love the fact that it is a collection. I am a person who likes to “binge” read a series. (Waiting for Stephen King’s The Dark Tower or the next book in Game of Thrones is very difficult. Anticipation is fun, but only if you have to wait a short amount of time!) I was happy that I did not have to wait for the resolution.

Third—I like the story world. It is urban fantasy with a mixture of modern living and ancient buildings; magic and technology; standard vehicles and futuristic Transpos. A not-so-secret organization is bent on destroying everything except what fits into their worldview and a brave few are willing to resist. The fight scenes are a mixture of magic and martial arts, claws/fangs and daggers/knives. In other words, a fun place to visit in a novel. (It would be a bit too dangerous in real life—especially with wolf-like shifters roaming around ready to go for your throat.)

Finally—I enjoyed the romance between Kaylan and Elijah. In a world seeped with magic, both dark and light, they are a realistic couple. I could easily believe the aspects that drew them together and the issues that kept them apart. Family also plays a large part in the theme of the novel. What do you owe them? What they owe you? How much are you willing to risk for the sake of that familial connection?

Shand spins an interesting tale filled with magic, narrow escapes, danger, intrigue, romance, and plenty of adventure. I kept turning the pages, wanting to find out what happened next. I look forward to reading other books by this author!

I was a fan of Tiffany Shand's first series, Denai Bound and I wasn't disappointed with this series at all.
I read all three one right after the other; the novels definitely read more as parts of one whole novel as opposed to three separate which I found myself enjoying as each flowed nicely into the next.
Shand never disappoints when it comes to suspenseful paranormal; I do wish that each novel built a little more on the characters and this world filled with good vs evil, magic, alchemy, and the tug of rope love story simply because I was so drawn in I wanted to know more.
There were some small editing/grammatical errors however were small compared to the overall body of the story.
I love a story where the female lead is a strong on, a woman who can hold her own, and Kaylan Avilion is a woman with a backbone.
I enjoyed how the suspense level remained relatively linear throughout each novel, starting with the return of Kaylan and her reunion with Ethan as her sister goes missing and then in the 2nd novel when the truth comes to light and the search for a book that is a vessel holding dark magic fuels a greed for power and finally in the third when the fight between family and sacrifice, good vs shapeshifters and the ultimate fight for happily ever after.
A capturing and thoroughly enjoyable series from the start.

Fast paced, good plot. The world could be better defined and so could the characters.Overall very enjoyable if not brilliant writing.

I was given a copy of this box set to review and I'm so happy I was. The Amaranthine Chronicles hits the ground running. Described as an Urban Fantasy it tells the tale of a small group of renegades, hiding among their fellow citizens, tasked with keeping the peace. But from page one you are told that there is something darker afoot. Spies, of the human and magical variety, force our heroes to adapt between attack and retreat as their true enemy is still a mystery. It definitely has a unique voice and feel. The fact that it opens in in the midst of a sting operation tasks the author with bringing us up to speed while still navigating a narrative. It can be daunting and confusing if not executed properly but Shand handles it the with relative ease.

Betrayed by Blood, the first book in the trilogy, begins with Kaylan Avillan's fiance being killed in a magical blast. The key players are introduced all at once. Woven through a series of telling dialogue the reader learns who these protagonists are. It reads as smart and creative. Tiffany Shand does an admirable job keeping each character distinct and interesting which adds a deeper layer to the story. Each of whom also possess some form of magic that can protect them. But this is where the trilogy differs from high fantasy. There are characters of technical aptitude as well. For instance the ability to pick a lock with a bobby pin or hack into a computer system. It's cute nods like, this to our world, where you remember that this could all be going on all around us. You get the feeling that this world exists for the author, she has been immersed in it. I just want more.

It is full of exciting action sequences that are choreographed well, and I of course I imagine it as a CW show so it's great. Picture a crime solving gang made up of four, thirty somethings with an older boss/mentor figure who has known them since they were kids. They battle supernatural forces without getting any glory but they don't complain. They're a tight-knit crew that are unstoppable when they're together. Doesn't that sound like something that could be blaring on your TV at say 8PM, Thursday nights? (AWESOME, right?)

This trilogy kept me on the edge of my seat and I found myself reading it long after I had decided to go to bed. Get the box set because you'll read all three in one sitting. Definitely a binge-read.
Did I mention it's chalked full of suspenseful moments? All in all in it was exciting to read and I greatly enjoyed it. There's no pesky description overload, enabling the reader to enlist their imaginations and keeps the story moving right along.

I have read A Chronicle. And found that the story seemed to jump all over the place and did not stream line . But trying to get so much into the story. where has if the book slowed down and the scenes were a little longer . It may have more interesting.
