The American Woman: A story of hope, disappointment and new beginnings (at the Dream Café series) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 25 ratings

When it’s impossible to forget is it possible to forgive?

Jennifer is stuck doing dead end waitressing jobs, her naïve dream of Hollywood stardom in tatters. Gareth, an IT consultant on a temporary contract, is the unlikely customer at Giulio’s Diner in the downbeat part of Los Angeles where she is now working.

It shouldn’t be a perfect match, the attractive, outgoing waitress from Idaho and the shy, good looker from Wales, but when it comes to relationships nothing is predictable, is it?

They move from state to state and when Gareth’s work in America dries up, Jennifer follows him to Britain. Everything changes. What is she supposed to do when she discovers that she’s been fed a pack of lies?

Now living alone in London, Jennifer is a regular at the popular Dream Café with a great job and a lovely set of friends, but it’s impossible to cast aside the wonderful memories of her time together with Gareth.

Were his lies justified? Are they forgivable? And most importantly, should she be giving Gareth the second chance he so desperately wants?

[This is a stand-alone novel in the ‘at the Dream Café’ series]

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book

I really enjoyed this book, I liked the way the relationship between Jennifer and Gareth was shared via flash back chapters while we watched Jennifer living her current life in London.
I had not read the two previous books and it didn’t take away my pleasure of reading this book, it works as a standalone perfectly ( although saying that I would like to read the other books now as I loved the community feel)
I found Jennifer to be really interesting and I was rooting for her to achieve her dreams. Seeing her muddling through her difficult times was inspiring, she was brave to do what she did and I was happy where she ended up at the end of the book.
Not wanting to give away any spoilers I won’t go into any specific details, but I did like the twists of fate sprinkled throughout the story.
I loved the travelling around part of the story and the author is very good at sharing descriptions of places and characters. I’m definitely going to look out for more books by this author.

I'm having fun with RJ's mix of characters, and it's always fun to drop in on the mains from other books in the series. This possibly gives the books their soap opera feel.
Interesting that this one is written in the first person as Jennifer the American would be actor / waitress.
I liked her. I was sad initially with her incapability to move on from her broken relationship, but getting it all to go right was a fun journey. Not sure about the work related sexual assault - I guess it would be less realistic if it was reported. To authorities. It seems like so much trouble, but leads to the perpetrator most likely acting that way again and perhaps escalating the behaviour- yuck.
Happy to go on to Team Spirit

It took a while for me to remember the characters and their histories from the other Dream Cafe books, and I initially found the alternating chapters spanning 30+ years somewhat off-putting . However, this is a “gentle “ novel, easy to read, with down to earth, realistic characters.
Richard Gould’s writing is honest and entertaining, and he is an author whose books I approach with anticipation and pleasure.
