Amulet of Wishes (Chronicles of the Guardians Book 1) Kindle Edition
The Guardians are the protectors of Aloseria. They are the keepers of the peace and they have a unique ability-they can turn into dragons.
Derek Draco is one of them. Haunted by the memories of his past, Derek comes across a piece of a mythical amulet, said to hold the power to grant wishes once all three pieces are brought together. Seeing an opportunity to right the wrongs of his past, Derek sets out on a journey to find the rest of the amulet, along with his friends, Jared and Arabelle. However, Derek is unaware of the true power of the amulet and using it to fulfil his seemingly innocent wish could have disastrous consequences.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2023Amulet of Wishes is a quintessential fantasy adventure experience, and I mean that in the most positive of connotations. It's one of those books that oozes perfect fantasy vibes to me. It makes the little kid who fell in love with The Hobbit and never looked back part of me overjoyed. I rarely say this, but I wanna live in this world.
That said, Derek Draco is a very troubled little man and acts accordingly. He can be infuriating, especially as an adult reading this. He's reactive and downright cruel at times. And he tested my patience A LOT. But, again, especially as an adult reading this, he's also very easy to empathize with. From the moment you learn what the titular amulet really is and why Derek wants it, you know there's only one way this journey can end and it can be grueling to watch at times, but it absolutely pays off in the end. Jared is my favorite boy, he's too good for this world. Arabelle is an absolute champ. Darus is best dad. We stan Aurelia in this household... And honestly, every single character in this is gold, in my opinion. Including that one guy I'm not gonna talk about. I hate him, but he's interesting damn it.
There's also a lot of fascinating lore in this world, so much so that my only gripe is that at times I wished the plot would slow down at little to let us explore the world a bit more. But I can't really fault a book too much for making me want more of it. I have hopes that moving further in this series will inevitably scratch that itch.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2022Amulet of Wishes is just like the fantastic adventure tales of my adolescence that I hadn't realized how long I'd been without. Going in I knew so little, but upon reading the final pages, I was completely invested in the world of Aloseria and our beloved cast of dragon-changing kids. Beginning with an impactful prologue before slowing to familiarize you with the characters and setting, Amulet of Wishes revs up to a truly exciting finale that left me eager for more. I’d grumble about cliffhangers, but I’m equally as guilty and know in my heart that I adore them.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2021AMULET OF WISHES is a fun, fast-paced, high-stakes epic fantasy adventure with a multi-POV cast that I’d follow to Mordor and back. Adventure with a side of mystery and some epic action scenes?? And also dragons?? Yes PLEASE.
The lore and history in this book are SUPER cool; I’d read a history book of this world. Rita does a great job solidifying each scene’s setting with vivid little details that ground me in the time and place. Her writing has a sort of vibe to it that, despite this being a story unlike any other I’ve read, makes it feel familiar. And I think that has a lot to do with the characters.
Speaking of which.... the *characters*. Derek, that emo bitch, I love him. I want everything good in the world for Jared. I’d let Arabelle stab me. And I absolutely love Darus and Aurelia’s interspersed POVs. I am so intrigued by Aurelia and I’d read a whole book just about her tbh. I, uh, hope she’s okay 👀
Anyway, the cast of this book are fantastic and their interactions with each other are really authentic, real, and very well done.
I cannot wait to see where this series goes next! If you’re looking for a solid high fantasy that feels like a classic, look no farther!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2021I loved this book. The motivations for every character was super clear and made me really understand their emotions. I liked the concept of how the dragons shifted, and that they weren't too powerful once they shifted. I'm super interested in the next book now, especially because of the last 10% of this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2022A group of friends off on a quest, some diabolical bandits, epic fights, and betrayals. It's easy to fall in love with the characters and even feel for them when you see them making messy decisions. The end felt a little quickly resolved at one point, but the intriguing epilogue, and the fact that there's more to come in the next books, leaves you feeling that's because it ISN'T quite resolved, and I'm excited to see what happens next.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2022I was provided an electronic copy of this book by the author Rita Rubin in exchange for an honest review.
Derek Draco, powerful half-elf orphan, embarks on a quest alongside his friends Jared and Arabelle, to find the amulet of wishes in the hopes of bringing his parents back. During the journey, the group deals with secrets, the trauma of taking lives, and is hunted by Durbash and his loyal bandits.
I adored this fantasy. I enjoyed the descriptions of how guardians can shift into dragons and world-building. It means a lot that there are so many visible Queer characters. The younger characters and older both are developed well, and the chapters from Aurelia’s point of view were a real treat. The character motivations make so much sense here and the stakes are high! Reveals were handled masterfully. The writing is approachable and immersive. During fight scenes, the reader could keep track of what was happening. The theme of parenthood was so emotional and satisfying to read.
I read primarily fantasy, and this one has distinct characters that you can’t help but empathize with. I can’t wait to read more from this world!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2021A good debut of a new writer, with obvious series potential. Compelling characters, engaging plot, and an interesting world that could evolve into something grand. The sensitive subject matter covered within and the inclusion of LGBTQ characters makes for a fresh face in a Fantasy adventure where best friends team up, turn into dragons, and beat up bandits in their search for a demonic amulet capable of changing their lives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect if you loved eragon
This was so charming. I’ve always loved stories about dragons so I was super excited to read this book! I was not disappointed.
Derek is our main character and he decides in going into a quest to right the wrongs of his life by using dark artefact to bring back his parents. Nothing goes according to his plan as his bff -Jared- and his cousin-Arabelle- decide to join him.
It’s a fast paced story with multiple povs and you don’t have any time to be bored ! I thoroughly enjoyed the writing and the pacing of the story. My favourite character has to be Darus. He’s a hot mess but he care deeply for Derek and he’s the best.
Reading this reminded me of some of my favourite books from when I was a teenager, I’m super excited to read the second book and to discover more about the world and the characters!!
THAT CLIFFHANGER?? Loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dragons, Magic, and Daemons!
I'm always one to get excited about a book with dragons in it and Amulet of Wishes was no exception! Offering a unique perspective on dragon-kind in a unique fantasy world, Rita crafts an engaging story that you just can't put down.
I also absolutely adored the melding of existing words and new ones to create parts of the world. The only thing I would've loved would be more lore on the dragons, but that's just my inner Draco speaking :P

Amulet of Wishes is an absolute joy to read. I finished it within two days because I simply could not put it down. A wonderful story that I could not recommend highly enough.
