Review
The Borman Factor: A Nick Borman Thriller Book 1 is a compelling read by Robert Lalonde, a well-crafted detective story that will grab the attention of fans of Robert Ludlum and Lee Child... The story starts with the crime, and the reader is introduced to the hit man, a man whose portrait comes out beautifully, as in works of James Patterson.
Robert Lalonde has an inimitable style of writing and his descriptions integrate elements of humor and precision to deliver a punch that strikes the right nerves in readers... sophisticated characters, great writing, and an intelligently plotted story. It is one of those rare books that I read through the night.
Other reviews by readers:

"From the minute I picked up this book I haven't been able to put it down."
"Hang on tight for this thrilling ride."
"If you're looking for a fast-paced, high-energy thriller, this is a find."

- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2017Meet Nick Borman, corporate security specialist, and sleuth. He's smart, tough, and knows his way around a criminal investigation. When a Toronto investigative reporter is killed in broad daylight, the journalist's family hires Borman to investigate when the police seem unwilling to look beyond a robbery gone bad theory.
Borman goes to work and quickly develops information that leads him to believe the reporter was killed by a professional assassin and that the crime was only staged to give the appearance the motive was robbery. As he continues digging, he starts to find the threads of a conspiracy to silence the reporter, involving a crooked real estate developer and some dishonest city officials on the take.
The Borman Factor, a crime thriller, is a real page turner. The characters are well-developed, it has a fast-paced plot, and the author did a good job of crafting some very suspenseful scenes that often kept me on the edge of my seat. The story gripped me from the very first chapter, and I had to keep reading to find out what happened next. The story itself was plausible and believable. While not one of those thrillers where there is non-stop, heart-pounding action, the type that leaves you feeling exhausted, it did have an acceptable amount of action and held my interest throughout.
Few books are perfect, and The Borman Factor is no exception. I do have one minor criticism. Given the title and the fact that the book is advertised as the first novel in the Nick Borman series, I think it reasonable as a reader to expect more of a focus on Nick Borman, the central character, than I actually found the case to be. He wasn't introduced until the fifth chapter, and at one point in the book, he seems almost forgotten as the story focuses far more on the supporting cast than the protagonist. Towards the end, Borman does return to center stage, but in my opinion, it came a bit late in the book.
Still, overall, I found The Borman Factor an entertaining and enjoyable read. As the kickoff to a series, there is definitely a good foundation established for the author to build on and I'm definitely interested in reading the next book in the series. Since perfection is after all an unrealistic standard to judge any book by, the small criticism I mentioned didn't dissuade me from rating the book as highly as I did, and I have no reservations at all about recommending it to other readers who enjoy crime thrillers.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2017I enjoyed the author’s terse, no-time-for-wasted words, Hemingway-like writing style. It kept the pace moving forward at a clip and suited this taught, multi-dimensional thriller. It reminded me of the Ludlum books where action and murder blend with political corruption, cover-ups and a money trail that requires an investigative journalist to cut through. In this case, Borman is at home with investigating corporate conspiracies and untangling the complex knots they inevitably entail, and at getting at the truth past the impenetrable wall of lies.
The police procedural elements also deliver. The characters, including the cops are realistic and the real conflicts they face with trying to investigate a case properly during an election year when no one wants the truth, just the cover-ups, at least until the election is past, is portrayed in a poignant fashion with the consummate split-loyalties and political maneuvering.
I loved the social commentary about the times interspersed with the story. i.e. “Road rage used to mean giving someone the finger or cutting them off with your car, not shooting their tires out while the car is moving at the speed limit!” But just as well showcased are those who manage to hold on to their humanity as times get tougher for us all. “This was one of the reasons he liked Novak so much. The man was being reamed out for trying to find his best friend’s killer and he asks how you’re doing.”
This is my first book by the author, but I will be happy to read more.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2016This thriller takes us through the grim world of crime and corruption at the highest levels of authority in Toronto. I enjoyed the plot, and I thought the storyline unfolded very well.
There is some violence, as one might expect with a thriller. Assassinations are described in detail - but not in a gratuitous, gory fashion.
The narration alternates between third person and first person. This somewhat unusual style serves to highlight the actions of the hero, Nick Borman, making them more immediate in comparison with the rest of the narrative. I thought this was very effective, and it keeps the reader on their toes.
The dialogue was very realistic and lively. I especially enjoyed the character of the corrupt mayor, who was brought to stark life most skilfully. I could really imagine him speaking and berating his officials. Along with the ruthless businessman, these characters were a great characterisation of the shady side of life.
This is not a whodunnit - we know from the start who the guilty parties are, but this by no means entails a predictable story, and there were some surprises to keep me interested throughout.
I felt that the character of the assistant could have been explored a bit more, to add some depth to the story, and I hope to see more of her in the next story.
All in all, this is a fast-paced, enjoyable read.
My one complaint is that I would like to read a bit more - hurry up and write the next one!

4.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining, well-paced thriller
A well-paced thriller highlighting the corruption within even our most trusted pillars of society. Unmasking the extent of the profiteering, blackmail and murderous activities is Nick Borman, who initially seeks to solve a murder on behalf of a friend, but then soon becomes embroiled in a plot run by men hose only motive is greed. To them, there is no price they won't pay for the power they crave.
The story begins with a who's who of characters. I began to wonder how they could be drawn into a single story, but I need not have worried. With intricate sub-plots the links are soon made and once they are then you have to stay for the ride. It's exciting, dramatic and eventful.
I'm looking forward to more of Nick Borman's adventures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Political Thriller
A good political thriller with an interesting main character. I liked the plot and how Nick Borman as investigator uncovers a conspiracy involving some big players, including some dirty cops. The book was right up my street as it wasn't overly violent and kept bad language to a minimum, showing that you can still tell a good story without overdoing these. It was an easy and gripping read. My only criticism is the use of third and first person throughout the book and in some chapters the author was 'head hopping' by moving from the first to third person in the same chapter, ultimately detracting from the story. I would have liked a bit more description and more detail in places. I hope that the author will edit the first and third person use out in his next book and decide on one consistent way of telling the story. I would be interested to read the next in the series. All in all, a good thriller.

4.0 out of 5 stars One for the murder-mystery fan
A gripping story that unravels as Borman struggles to understand the connections of different politically motivated murders. A quick-paced read that knows how to deliver.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great action-packed thriller
Now, this is what I call a great murder-thriller! Robert Lalonde's writing is crisp and fast-paced. He's certainly got the hang of writing a detective novel. His main character, Nick Borman, is well-developed and comes across realistically. I gather this is his first book in a series. I am looking forward to reading more... Glen Witter

5.0 out of 5 stars The Borman Factor
The Borman Factor is a quality thriller featuring Nick Borman, a resourceful security specialist. The lead character is well portrayed with the necessary skills at his disposal to be both believable and engaging. He's a man you'd want on your side when the going gets tough.
Highlights of the book for me were the strong sense of place, which was elegantly described, placing the reader at the centre of the locations and action, and the subject matter of corruption. People who abuse their positions of power are the scourge of our society and are often worse than people labelled 'villains'. The corrupt officials in The Borman Factor, government officials, businessmen and police officers are suitable loathsome and well described.
As with all good thrillers, the plot takes many twists and turns, and contains a number of hidden layers that keep you turning the pages. There is an authentic feel to the novel, suggesting that the author is well versed with his subject.
An impressive novel. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
