- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2018Format: KindleThe first book in a historical series that focuses on a group of brothers set in the fourteenth century, THE HEIR'S TALE by April Munday weaves a fascinating and compelling tale of power and love while painting a picture of life at that time.
When Ancelin Montfort returns to England it is as his father's new heir which plays heavy on his mind. Having never been raised with this duty at the forefront, Ancelin is concerned about what his future will hold. And then there is wife to be, Emma. Plain but kind, much like himself, can he truly be happy with her? Especially when there is the seductive Alice, his brother's widow waiting in the wings.
Add in plenty of intrigue and drama from that time period, and this story will definitely hold your interest. There were plenty of moments that made me uncomfortable and really appreciate the fact that I live now and not back then, but history is what it is and this is well portrayed throughout.
THE HEIR'S TALE by April Mundy is a well-paced historical story with characters of all types (some that you will love and some that you will loathe) and I look forward to reading more.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2017Format: KindleThe Soldiers of Fortune Series is a collection of books, each telling a story about one of the four remaining Montfort brothers. We begin with the second eldest son, and now heir, Ancelin, in ‘The Heir’s Tale’ which will be followed by ‘The Monk’s Tale, ‘The Knight’s Tale,’ and a fourth, still in production.
The cover is eye-catching with a soldier in the top section, his face half-covered by a weapon, presumably a blade, and below the title, a serene shot of a fortress nestled on a hill at sunrise. This scene does not appear in the story but maybe it represents Ancelin’s home. The book is placed into the ‘historical romance’ genre and this series sounded promising. I received ‘The Heir’s Tale’ as an ‘Advance Review Copy’ (many thanks to the author) and found it to be an easy-to-read, uncomplicated story based on a ‘love triangle,’ although at times, somewhat predictable.
Opening with a prologue that could have simply passed for the first chapter, the reader is introduced to one of the five brothers, Ancelin, as he commences his night-watch duty on the eve of The Battle of Poitiers in France. He is disturbed by rutting noises in the camp and upon hearing yelling for it to stop, decides to investigate. This scene is a wee bit confusing as the victim, Mark, is described more than once as both a ‘boy’ and a ‘man’ leaving the reader unable to visualise or approximate the character’s age. The lack of closure to this rape scene is also a little bewildering, more so for the reader, as Mark, it would seem, just returns to a tent and sleeps fine.
The lack of a battle scene was disappointing for me, the story re-commencing with a heading of ‘after the battle’ and throughout, the author chooses to severely limit her options to create medieval atmosphere using imagery and descriptions. As for the battle, an account of it does appear in editorial style in the author’s blog but to include the fight scenes would have added a layer of richness to the opening.
So, this story won’t take you into the action but instead relies heavily or solely on the interaction between the three main characters, Ancelin; his betrothed, Emma, and his widowed sister-by-marriage, Alice. Once Ancelin returns home, it doesn’t take the reader long to work out Alice’s motives but poor Ancelin is a little naïve. Another confusion arose for me when Ancelin and Emma are referred to as both betrothed and married at the same time, Emma even referred to as a ‘betrothed wife.’ The 14thC was a very religious era, (most successes and defeats attributed to ‘God’s will’), so an earl’s son would have been accorded proper traditions. The ‘reading of banns’ before any wedding was a necessity in those times, and Ancelin and Emma’s status would have been only ‘betrothed.’
Ancelin takes his new responsibilities seriously but is constantly plagued by guilt, often for events well out of his control. He has a detrimental habit of jumping irrationally to very wrong conclusions. The moral seems clear too – a bird in the hand.
The author embraces a style that seems to be aimed at younger readers of historical romance, the structure being straightforward with little to no sub-plots and it enjoys the occasional repetition. However, if you wish to sink your teeth into a quick and easy read with a story based purely on the characters emotions, this one may tingle your tastebuds.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2018Format: KindleWhat a lovely book! I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it as I haven’t read a lot of historical fiction, also this was my first read by April Munday.
There are four books in this series and this is the first. The series follows four brothers after the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. The first book in the series is about Ancelin Montfort return from France in 1357, returning to become the Heir to his father’s Estate having lost his eldest brother John. He also is coming home to Emma his betrothed and Alice, his brothers widow.
This is a historical fiction with a very good description of life in the 14th century written with Ancelin as the the main character and his struggle with power and love. We get to know the Earl and his strong love and bond with future daughter-in-law Emma, I like this close relationship and how they bonded whilst being at home waiting for the men to return from war.
Joan is Emma’s lady-in-waiting who is by Emma side 24 hours a day, for most of us today an idea we could not imagine! Then there is Alice a forced to be reckoned with who will stop at nothing regarding every matter.
The style of writing makes it a very easy read and fast paced. It was certainly a good page turner and I had a job to put it down! The plot unfolded nicely and I was not able to picture the outcome of the story, well done to the author.
I would highly recommend April Munday’s book and I look forward to reading the following books in this series, or other books written by this author.
