The Art of Loving Kindle Edition
But what she hasn't accounted for is the unnerving presence of eminent nuclear physicist Max Dreiecke von Hardtwald, who is not only her aunt's step-nephew, but also owns the magnificent house where her aunt lives. Nor has she realised that her aunt is dying and that Max believes that Kelly has materialised out of the woodwork at this precise moment in order to benefit from her substantial will.

About the author

Helen Carey is best known for her popular Lavender Road series, which is set in South London during the Second World War. The Lavender Road novels include LAVENDER ROAD, SOME SUNNY DAY, ON A WING AND A PRAYER, LONDON CALLING and THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET.
Helen started writing about the war when she met a neighbour at a bus stop in London who pointed out where the air-raid shelters used to be on Clapham Common. That sparked an interest in the Second World War, especially for lesser known details, which now appear in Helen's spell-binding novels.
Having lived in London, Germany, Switzerland and the West Indies, Helen now lives in Newport, Pembrokeshire, on a small coastal farm which she and her husband run as a conservation project. She is also a prize winning artist and has made a gallery out of a converted goat shed. As well as painting and writing she teaches Creative Writing at various universities and currently has a Royal Literary Fund fellowship at Aberystwyth University.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseReally wonderful book that shows about life and love. I love all her books and wish she would write more!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMostly about the roller coaster teenage feelings of a girl now in her 30's. Overdone. Not enough plot to the story. Helen Carey is a good writer, but I personally felt this fell below her previous standards
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI did like the book but did not get as involved in it as I did in the Lavender Road series. Enjoyed the setting in Heidelberg. Know the city well, but got lost every time I visited there. I do love a good love story
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDid not care for the book it was more like a Harlequin romance not my cup of tea it must have been one of her first books

- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2012Format: KindleKelly James arrives in Heidelberg, Germany after winning a scholarship to study and work under the famous artist, Wilhelm Brock. She meets an aunt she never knew she had and snared the attention and ire of Max Dreiecke, her aunt's step-nephew and owner of the home she will be residing in for the duration of her stay. She doesn't know that her aunt Louisa is deathly ill, and to make matters worse, Max thinks she's there to stake a claim on an inheritance. Misconceptions and misunderstandings between Max and Kelly constantly add to the sexual tension between them. Though Kelly is attracted to him, she refuses to give in to her feelings and become as flighty as her mother. Max's only excuse is that he wants to protect Louisa from being hurt by her family, who has ignored her for the past forty years. Louisa seems to have her own agenda. When Louisa's health takes a turn for the worse, Max suggests that he and Kelly pretend to be falling in love with each other. Apparently that is Louisa's greatest wish. Throw in gorgeous colleagues and an artist with a penchant for lovely female students and the drama is complete.
I really liked this story. It's charming and full of emotion. My heart broke for Kelly many times over. As an artist she needs to be able to tap into her emotions, but her hurt and shame over her parents has only led her to build barriers around her heart. She came across as very weak - both physically and emotionally. I would have liked to have seen more emotional growth from her; to see her go from timid wallflower to a woman who blossoms after finding love. Max was the polar opposite to Kelly - confident, brooding, a quick temper and never short of admirers. There's no kind way to say it, but he's a (sexy) jerk throughout the story. He makes assumptions and voices them, not realizing that every word and action cuts Kelly down a little bit more each time. There wasn't a dull or slow moment. It was fluid, and I felt immersed in Kelly's feelings as she was experiencing them. Max's actions kept me guessing until the very end as to his true feelings towards her. The ending took me a little by surprise but it was a beautiful conclusion to the story of this unlikely couple.
This was my first story by Ms Carey, but I would definitely like to read more of her stories.
It bears mentioning that this story is written in British English (any words that may be conceived as spelling/grammar mistakes actually aren't).

2.0 out of 5 stars Stereotypical nonsense!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the first Helen Carey I've read, and I very much doubt I'll try another. Absolute self-indulgent tosh I'm afraid - stereotypical strong, suffering, incredibly rude but overwhelmingly gorgeous bloke, wimpy, self pitying, gutless doormat of a female, given to way too much boring/childish introspection and way too little intelligent behaviour, the only parts worth reading were those where a little research into the fine art world provided some interesting information (hence 2 stars). I finished it because I hate to give up on any book, but blimey, it annoyed me! Even 'chick lit', disparaged by many but nevertheless a major genre and enjoyable escapism for millions, deserves better than this!

5.0 out of 5 stars A sweet romance from matchless Helen Carey
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIf you like unabashed happy-ending romance, you'll enjoy this sweet offering with its will-she-won't-she theme. Helen Carey gives us a sizzling hunk of a hero, smashing the usual macho cliche by making him German. I think this is the first German hero I've encountered since I read 'The Fall of the Nibbelung' many years ago and rather fancied Siegfried. Tough, Porsche-handling and a nuclear physicist, kind to old ladies too. What's not to like. Helen matches her finely Krafted hero with engaging waif, Kelly who turns out to be more than a match for the matcho. A lovely page-turner, ideal for a flight or a long train journey and will give you a taste of Helen's laconic style which finds its full expression in the Lavender Road series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHaving loved the Lavender Road series and enjoyed Slick Deals this was a disappointment. Normally full of intriguing characters this author's books can be engrossing. The lead in this, Kelly, I found to be insipid and self centred and there wasn't much else going on to distract from this dull character. I did not really care how the story panned out but it was short enough to just see it through as I hate leaving a book unfinished.
