If you like it hot, angsty, all hate-effery , Alex Wolf never fails to turn up the dial. He writes the perfect Alpha-hole with the undeniable touch of testosterone that comes from a male author of romance. The heroine is a bit OTT with her emotions, but she comes across as a woman who is nobody's fool. She is written respectfully and not as a caricature of womanhood. It is wonderfully predictable to those of us who love the art -form. However, I caught a glimpse of something else our author was trying to say through the setting of this swoony romance.

The heroine works as a writer for her local Kansas City newspaper owned by an aging couple whom she dearly loves. Their paper is no longer financially viable because the couple, while establishing a sterling reputation for news reporting, failed to keep up with the necessities of an online presence. Our hero wants to buy them out and make the newspaper part of a media syndicate. This is the central conflict between H/h.

When did it happen to us? Can you remember reading the daily paper and really knowing what was happening in your community? When did it become so much more important for us to have "the news" digested for us and spun out one way or another to make us feel we were on the side of the "angels" if we thought the way the news personality did? When did hearing an opposing opinion bring us to the point of rage? When did we stop watching the news from sources that publish their "Standards of Practices" for journalistic integrity and start watching "News Entertainment Networks that have " No" such practices? When did we allow ourselves to be manipulated by the billionaires who care only about the game of making more money?

Funny how the thing that saved the day in this story was genuine true spiritual love...it also saved the local paper. It is the same thing we need to give each other and our country... some hard-fought, soul- searched, well thought -out ... love. Even if that means entertaining the possibility that we may have been wrong about our conclusions. We may have been manipulated...made to fear...made to believe things that could not be true...made to fight for causes not worthy of our noble hearts.

As Americans, we have been blessed with a beautiful land and heritage, certainly not perfect. We should love her enough to listen to one another and do what it takes to make her better, more perfect even if it means letting go of thoughts that seem like simple explanations or solutions, when complex problems are only made worse and even more hurtful to someone who is unfairly disadvantaged by simplistic tribal thinking. We need to love one another enough to weigh the words uttered by the media with an ear toward bias, (even if it aligns with our own) and manipulation for the truth of any matter. We need each other now more than ever in so many disparate ways. We cannot afford to lose one soul unnecessarily.

Yeah, I read all of that from the subtle subtext of this book. Crazy, huh?

I have to say I was drawn to this book by the front cover. I don't even think I read the blurb.

Mara is a writer who is attending a publishing conference. I enjoy her inner monologue and thoughts. She is kinda funny. She accidentally runs into a brick wall, or should I at and jerk with an ego. That conversation was interesting.

Oh, the man she runs into is also the billionaire speaker at her next conference. Asher Grayson is a businessman. Okay, so this book is riddled with laugh-out-loud sarcasm and snarky comments between the inner monologue and the outside conversations. They have a lovely battle of tongues in the middle of a conference hallway. I can't wait to see where this will go.

This book does jump between perspectives and has a nice seamless switch in conversations as well. Their lives seem to entangle. This book gets steamy as they take their tongue lashing to the bedroom.

We see a different side to Asher as he is hypnotized by his feelings. It kinda sucks the amount of stress Mara is feeling, but at the same time, it is weird that Asher is so intertwined in it. Unsurprisingly things come to a head, and they shatter, leaving the couple reeling. What really surprised me was the solution that Asher and his partner came up with. This book does end happily.

This book was a great look into a sweet romance between an unlikely couple with unfortunate issues in business against each other. Asher and Mara's romance was super steamy but also dreamy. I mean, who wouldn't want a billionaire businessman interested in them. I love how grounded Mara" s character was in the story. I also love the changes we saw Asher go thru while he realized what happened. I love that it all worked out fantastically but getting there was a trip. This was a lovely business-based read.

This book was so good! I adore Asher. He was such a pompous jerk, but he shed that skin pretty quickly. Mara is definitely fiery. I'd say she lost that, but it would be a lie. She was a spitfire to the end. She really infuriated me. I read these books where the women screw up and the men still have to grovel or make a huge gesture to win them back. Why? Mara was the jerk. She jumped to conclusions...mostly because she was afraid of what she was feeling. Asher worked to get her back and he apologized. She never apologized once. Drives me crazy! I'm the end, she gets everything. The business, her dream trip and the man. Granted, she deserves it. She's amazing. I just think she should have done something to make it up to him. More than just saying yes to his proposals.

Asher Grayson may be hot but his arrogant makes you want to hit him. It always seem the bigger they are the harder they fall, but when Mara Monroe accidentally runs into him it’s Asher that doesn’t know what hits him. What happens next is a fun cat and mouse story with characters that you will fall in love with and cheer for their HEA. Lots of chemistry and a delightful heat level that blossoms to so much more and an entertaining romance read from start to finish makes this a must read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stop snickering!
Reviewed in Canada on November 16, 2021
I’ve complained about this with a previous Alex Wolf book, but apparently he likes the word “snicker” so much, he uses it , and uses it, and uses it (note the repetition?)
I’m only part way through this book, but I can’t contain my frustration. When I think of someone ‘snickering’, it conjures up someone weak and unattractive.
For the love of God, stop this word overuse.
  • Charisse Durack
4.0 out of 5 stars good book BUT I was so frustrated that two words, specifically one, SNICKERED, SNICKERS OR SNICKERED appeared so often. I counted at least 20 times, the lesser annoying word was SNORT or SNORTED, surely the proof reader/editor should have picked up on this.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 2, 2022
As above - there are so many alternative words to snickered (most annoying one) and snorted. I found it was easier to scoot by pages without reading their thoughts all the time. It was a good book but could have been better.
