An impoverished widow …

    It amazes me that there are so many talented authors whose works I have yet to come across and by way of recommendation from a friend, I found Jane Maguire (and the bonus was that my supplier was running a 'special price' sale).
    I really enjoyed the way this story was written because I wasn't aware of reading it - I just did!
    The characters of Theodora and Jeremy were perfect for each other and the more I read, the more I loved them. Their heated passion was quite intense at times and fitted in well with the rest of the story.
    The story also has two young boys and a dog in it which could be quite catestrophic if not written in well, but I didn't have a problem with them because they complimented what was going on and really added some entertaining interludes.
    In my opinion, this is a lovely story with some absolutely likable characters who kept me interested and well entertained and that is why I read!

    Theodora Prescott is the star of this book. Now a widow with two young boys, Theo is under the thumb of her mother-in-law, the very controlling Dowager Marchioness of Rockliffe. Theo's life is progressing according to the dowager's plans until Jeremy Clare-a tutor for her sons-comes along and shakes up her world.

    I enjoyed how the prologue set the tone with a deception that colors everyone's interactions with the dowager. She was quite the piece of work and I wonder if Jeremy hadn't come along, would Theo's story have progressed as it did?

    Theo was a lovely character. She had backbone, she was independent and smart, and such a kind and loving mother. I enjoyed Theo's interests in painting and writing. Jeremey, while only three years younger than Theo, felt even younger than his years; perhaps because he had less life experience than Theo up until now? Jeremy was an okay character. There were moments where I wish he was more forthright, but I did admire his care for Theo's boys, Ben and Alex.

    If you enjoy a romance that heavily involves children, a sweet family dynamic, and dusted with the dramatic undermining of a sort of, but not really, well meaning foe.....then you might enjoy giving this book a try.

    Why is it that tutor romances are so hot? For us, it comes down to a few critical elements:⁠
    ⁠
    *The FMC is usually older and more experienced, especially in comparison with other HRs⁠
    *The MMC is in a subservient position, so he has to show his desirability in ways other than being the traditional masculine provider⁠
    *The employer/employee element that can be squicky is balanced out by the masculine/feminine power play⁠
    ⁠
    Why do we bring this up here? Well, in A Study in Desire, Jeremy is the tutor for Theodora's two sons. Theo is recently widowed, and even more recently fell on hard times. She feels like she's been forced to move in with her MIL and go along with plans to bring up her sons as little aristocrats. She didn't even have a say in Jeremy's hiring, so she's surprised to find that her sons' tutor is (dare we say) HOT. ⁠
    ⁠
    Not only is he hot, he's also good with her kids, good with his hands (IYKWIM), maybe a little too ethical, and a really supportive partner. So what could go wrong here?⁠

    We always love an external conflict that the MCs have to solve together. That was the case here, making the ending very satisfying.⁠

    Widowed Theodora Prescott finds herself between a rock and a hard place. The dowager marchioness Beatrice Prescott rejected Theo as her younger son’s unsuitable wife from the outset. When her print shop burned following husband Samuel’s untimely death, Theo had to eat humble pie and submit to the dowager’s iron fist. However, the plot thickens as the story unfolds. Theo finds herself faced with the hardest decisions of her life. I enjoyed Theo’s gradual enlightenment and regaining her purpose in life along with her fortitude. However, the ending seemed a bit anticlimactic. I thank the author for an advance review copy and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

    Theodora was a widow with two young sons. Being unable to support herself, she was forced to live with her authoritarian mother-in-law. One day, a handsome young tutor arrived to teach her children. Jeremy and Theo were attracted to one another, but they tried to resist their feelings. Once they began a clandestine affair, their secret was soon discovered.
    This book was different from most regency romances in that neither one of the characters had enormous wealth to fall back on. Both of them were living on the periphery of society, so they had to avoid making any missteps. I think I had to wipe my eyes constantly for the entire second half of the book. The ending was happy but getting there was a struggle. This book was steamy. The characters were well-written and there was also humor, drama and deceit. And a heroic dog too.
