Asylum: A Dark Romance Thriller Kindle Edition
Their meaning, the pictures they paint in the minds of those that hear them.
They’re not always the same, and to me at least, that makes them meaningless.
Take for instance the phrase ‘black widow’.
Those words conjure the image of a spider.
However, instead of speaking of an arachnid, the people who whisper them are talking about something much different.
They’re talking about me.
From what I’m told, no man I’ve ever loved has survived.
Yet, I have no memory of any of it.
My new home leads me to the definition of another vague and meaningless word.
But the definition is wrong when you’re made silent by drugs and pretty white jackets.
My name is Alexandra Sutton and this is the story of what happened when I was imprisoned inside an Asylum.
*****Disclaimer: Asylum is a dark novel that contains sensitive subject matter not appropriate for readers below the age of 18 years of age. Asylum also contains explicit descriptions of violence. Asylum is a full length novel at 90K + words and is not part of a series.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2014“There’s no point in telling anybody the truth. We’re crazy and they wouldn’t believe us anyway.”
What an amazing story! There was so much going on and to feel; it was heartbreaking what was happening to the girls in the asylum, seeing the things Alex went through in her past, did Alex kill the men? It was gripping, awful, frightful, and hopeful. Uncovering the truth was twisted and intense.
“Biting my lip, I closed my eyes and tried to imagine myself anywhere but in this place. However, no amount of imagination could pull me from the moment. I was an animal trapped and helpless, the type who was so desperate to escape they would chew off their own leg to survive.”
Lily White has an amazing way of making you feel… her words are piercing and make you feel deep within yourself. The descriptors and images she paints had me holding my breath, covering my mouth, my stomach twisting, and my heart pounding. I could not put this book down!
“From an outside perspective, made by a person who didn’t understand what the patients endured on a nightly basis, I would have appeared as insane as they claimed me to be in that moment. I screamed until my throat was hoarse, I gnashed out with my teeth, hoping to lock enamel over skin and stop him from tying me down. My body thrashed and the gurney moaned and shrieked from the violent movement. No words were escaping my lips, just unintelligible grunts and barks of terror filled desperation. I was an animal struggling not to be caged and a woman fighting for her life.”
Wow! So intense and full of feeling and emotion.
Jeremy, Jeremy, Jeremy. What a character we have here. Can we trust him? Is he like the others? He’s hot, amazing, and willing to do anything to help Alex.
The writing is incredible! Most of the staff is evil and the things these patients said and did, just wow. There were moments my jaw dropped, I chuckled, I was worried. What was real and who can you trust? A must read!
“So much heartache and pain. How was it possible for me to keep breathing, for my heart to keep beating, when all I endured was abuse after abuse and lie after horrible lie?”
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2024I am feeling a solid 4 Stars for Asylum.
I 1000% was on the edge of my seat and completely confused throughout this entire story! I loved how unreliable everything felt and the way that it had me not trusting anything or anyone. I loved that it made me constantly question what was real and what was not. The excitement of not knowing what to believe and thinking there could be so many different explanations might have been my downfall though. I went down many rabbit holes and the ending felt much more simplistic than I was anticipating.
Lily White has an incredible talent to brave really dark corners of writing. And she has written some of my favorite books with the most heart wrenching content. And because of that, it's difficult to not set myself up for any level of expectations, so I was left slightly underwhelmed with the Final Chapter and Epilogue. I was expecting the conclusion to be a little riskier with the answers and craved darker reasonings. Plus, I felt that there was opportunities for some deeper connections with certain characters. And I personally felt like I had too many unanswered questions.
Overall I enjoyed the originality of this story (I'll definitely never think of EYES the same way again for some time, that's for sure). I appreciated being surprised, twisted up, making up theories, being shocked at some of the c r a z y things that the patients said and did, and just being led on a wild chase to figure out what was going to be the ending of this story. Even though, it wasn't my preferred ending, I still am so happy to have read it and experienced what I did while reading it!
Also, it needs to be mentioned, this is quite a slow burn, in a sense, for the Erotic elements to take place...for me, I didn't consider things to get spicy (being that it was consensual in my opinion) until around the 75% mark. Up until then, it was more so triggering content/trauma that was sexual in nature occurring. There is also a particular chapter near the end that contained one of the most unhinged characters I believe that I have read thus far....Lily, she really shook me with the character Julianne...*insert body shiver lol!*
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2014"Asylum" was successful at keeping my interest, but there were some things that really annoyed me - that if not for the fact that I wanted to see what happened next, I would have put the book down and never picked it back up. There were several grammatical errors throughout the book, which should never happen. Get an editor. Also, although "Asylum" had an interesting ending, I found that there were a few loose ends - things that were never explained. A warning if you're thinking about reading this book - most of the events within the story are highly unrealistic, which the author does make note of in the beginning. I would recommend this book for those of you who don't have high expectations - for both the author and the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously Amazing!
Ok I don't where this author came from, but can I just say she is amazing! She should seriously be writing scripts for Hollywood, but OK back to the review. I could no put this book down from the first page. This is a seriously captivating book that will keep you up till the very early hours of the morning because you have to finish the book. This book was so mind boggling and twisted but in a good way. You will not expect it to end the way it does. I'm almost thinking this book is sort of along the lines of 'Girl Interrupted' but with a great romance and twist to it. My recommendation would be to read it, you want be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jawdropping
I finished this early this morning and I started it yesterday. I finally stopped reading last night when my eyes were sore and scratchy and I realised it was 1.30am and I needed to be up at 6. But by then my mind had been so churned that I couldn't sleep.
I've read other Lily White and thought it was good; but this was....terrific, horrifying, heartbreaking, frustrating (I so wanted to save Alex!). It was full of brilliant, coherent, completely blindsiding plot twists and characters that seemed like they had been pulled from the nightmares of a genuine madwoman. I was questioning Alex's sanity, Jeremy's morality, which of the two Js in the book could be Jay: and finally, which rabbit hole I had fallen down and would I ever get out again?
The flashbacks of Alex's past made my heart bleed for her.
And Dr Jeremy Hutchins. A completely, utterly brilliant, epilogue from his POV. Talk about love/hate.
I thought this was her best book to date: completely engrossing; lyrical in some places; and those flickering light and Alex's descriptions of sliding under the hallucinogens - well, I'm never going near a strobe light again.
I am just glad that Lily White let me out of her Asylum. But so glad that she let me in,too.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a head spin
Just wow. This book had me all over the place. I didn’t know if I was coming or going with it. It totally had me on the edge of my seat wanting to find out what the hell was going on with Alex. Was she insane? Did she commit the murders? Who is the hooded man? Is he real? These are all questions that will go through your mind too if you read the book. And you’ll mistrust everyone and wonder if everyone is as they seems. I know I did. I was blaming the doctor. I was blaming Joe. Every man in this book was the enemy to me. And then there is Alex. A girl with trauma and amnesia that can’t remember killing two guys. She can’t remember being attacked when she was a child and she can just barely remember the car accident. So much to happen to one person that it’s no wonder she snapped. Or did she? That’s what you have to find out. I did enjoy this book. However the last chapter threw me for a spin. The conversation between Jeremy and Ali has me questioning everything I read up to that point, so now I don’t know what to believe. I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone. But what a 180? It almost made me want to throw my phone across the room. And then after the conversation; it was like another 180. This book reminds me of Verity where it’s down to the reader to decide what is the truth and what isn’t. And though I had my final opinion for that book, I can’t decide what is the truth for this book and what the doctors true intentions are. This book is probably going to stay with me for a while; just keeping me up at night. Which makes it a good book In my opinion!

4.0 out of 5 stars So interesting and exciting!
I really loved this book. From the start we are confused to what is happening, the story plays out very well but I have to Say I was disappointed with the ending.
It ended abruptly. We find something that was quite shocking but still wasn't explained well enough to understand what happened fully. One minute it was getting very intense and the next it was over. The ending could have been so much better. I feel like it was definitely rushed.
The rest of the book was well sized and long and the ending had a tiny chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting!
Another excellent, twisted, dark & mind mesmerizing book. Loved the characters, the twists/ turns in the storyline & the other patients. I really felt for Alex. I also really wanted to like & trust the good Doctor. I was waiting for the final twist & wasn't disappointed. I won't write anymore as the other reviewers have said it all.
Well done Lily! When is your next book out? I can't wait.
