A Tender Soul Kindle Edition
Death ought not to be a happy thing, but then, marriage ought not to be a prison.
Seven years ago, Lady Lydia Whiting married for the good of her parents, and widowhood was supposed to mark the beginning of her freedom. But when her husband spurns her from beyond the grave and cuts her from his will, her parents are determined to force her into another wretched marriage of convenience.
Fleeing is the only option.
Robert Bradshaw has a good, quiet life. Work and his daughter are all he needs, even if others think he ought to remarry. Why should he? His beloved wife was an angel among men, and no other could compare—especially a young widow who is more mouse than woman.
But with Lydia’s parents determined to get her back under their thumb, Robert may be her only salvation.

About the author

Born and raised in Anchorage, M.A. Nichols is a lifelong Alaskan, though she briefly ventured south to get a fancy bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree from Utah State University—neither of which had anything to do with why she became an author, but they kept her alive while launching her publishing career.
As a child she despised reading, but thanks to her mother’s love and persistence, she saw the error of her ways and developed a deep and abiding obsession with books. Currently, she writes sweet historical romance and fantasy, but as a lover of many genres, she plans to explore more in the future.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBoth the of the main characters learn about healing and forgiveness. Strong characters and a strong storyline. Very much enjoyed this book. On to the next one in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love this author! If you are new to this author I recommend reading another of her books first. You can jump into her series anywhere but they are best enjoyed reading them in order. And I’ve loved her series. And her Christmas stories.
This story was at times quite sad to read, in fact almost the entire story is another revealing piece of background for one or the other’s story. We know our two protagonists would be good for each other but for the Hero his load of baggage is a lot to get rid of. The heroine has a lot on her shoulders to deal with, including threats of kidnapping of her daughter. But her memories are not nice: Manipulative parents, a horrible marriage
There is a very long road to their happily ever after, but it felt very realistic, authentic. It is very well written, there is a lot of worldly wisdom embedded into the various problems the H&h deal with. Thought provoking.
I borrowed this through KU but I will buy it because at some point I want to read it again.

I highly recommend this book. The author is consistently good. It's not a happy book but it's very, very good.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA good story with the theme of how people alter their memories, and the repercussions of doing so. Otherwise, it is a pretty standard romance genre novel with a "HEA".
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a beautiful story. Both the heroine and the hero in the story are completely drawn characters, not caricatures. The challenges they face are real, and the doubts that they have, because of past hurts, prevent them from truly committing themselves to love. But neither one gives up, and they finally open themselves up to love. An excellent story with great secondary characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the most insightful book I have ever read about the damage of being made to feel inadequate on a person. It built and grew Asa a story, not letting me get to my work the last couple of days. The humility of realizing our own brokenness and admiting it was a wonderful tale of healing, and I adored the growth of the main characters as the faced the truth.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoy M.A. Nichols' stories for the unconventional h & H's & love stories. They highlight the perfectly imperfect people on their journey of growth & love. I'm glad we got to see what happens to Mary's sister. The two main characters each had their similar struggles & they complimented each other so well. While on the surface they may seem opposite they were very much unified where it truly matters. Robert did have me frustrated sometimes, lol! I think their healing & slow romance felt natural, authentic and real. Great food for thought, dialogue, flow of story. All the makings of a good novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tender Soul indeed
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAlthough this is a fictional story it has such an understanding of the uncertainties and frailties of human nature. As the story progressed I hoped the characters would come together but stubbiness and fear of opening oneself to another can ruin many friendships.
Thank you for a lovely story I couldn’t stop reading even though my eyes were sore xx

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Goody!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe author has pulled another great story out if the ether. The two main characters are in equal parts likeable and detestable.
Robert, while stirred to help a woman in need, is gravely in need of a good slap as he dismisses Lydia’s deep-seated lack of confidence.
Lydia, meanwhile, hides and can’t face up to the problems she has experienced.
In the end, both break out from their false memories of the past, each recognising in the other those things missing in their respective lives.
Mary and Lydia’s parent yet again reveal their vow that their daughters are cash cows, existing to rogued for their parents comfort. It’s a massive eye-opener for Robert.
Superb story. Highly recommended
