4.4 out of 5 stars 578 ratings

The last thing Smokey should let himself want is this man, but he can’t seem to stay away…

Every time Smokey stares at the President patch on his cut, he feels like an imposter. But thirty years later and the fate of the Broken Chains resting on his shoulders, all eyes were on him.

Now there’s a dead man in an alley with a cut bearing the name of The Cobras, and Smokey knows they’re not prepared to handle the consequences.

Especially since the only witness is a civilian.

Now Eliah’s in Smokey’s home, hiding from the men who want him dead, and Smokey’s trying to keep his heart from tripping and falling for a man he shouldn’t want while learning who is trying to set his club up to start a full on war.

Broken Chains MC is a Motorcycle Club Romance series with dubious morality, mild violence, one night stands, hate to love, and happily ever afters.

I was expecting more from this book but I'm happy with the direction this book went. I'm assuming, it's to be able to tie in the other stories to this series. Unexpected surprises, and unusual turns, I'm still invested as a reader, because I want to know how the rest of this series ends. I'm loving the unexpected twist and turns. Good job E.M.

This one was not as good as the first but still a great read. Smokey is a great guy, brother, leader and protector. E (I can't remember how to spell his name and it's to pretty to butcher lol) was really interesting. His backstory was of course sad but also new and intriguing as a character (while so many other books keep using the same ole tropes over and over) though it was a eye rolling laugh that of course it being men who won't communicate anything they actually want or feel there is a gap in their romance. I love alpha men but sometimes they can be so dense lol.

The one thing I didn't like was. We got introduced to Smokey's brother Rory in the first book and I really liked him and hoped we got to know him more..... then in this book he was awful. He was hateful and rude to Smokey yelled and screamed like a child. It just made me lose all of the likability I had for him. I really hope he grows up and hopefully becomes a better person before or if he gets a book.

Aside from that I can't wait for the next book. It definitely seems fun.

I'm loving this series and looking forward to reading all the stories. I hope their are stories for the rabbi and kick? Nate and Rory? And I hope gunner and Logan gets married as well as professor and Aaron. I just love of all these characters have flaws, and are people that we know, or just people that we see going about our daily lives and you wonder what there stories are. I'm just glad someone was able to break away from the norm of the perfect functioning guy, to a guy that isn't so perfect but can find love even without being perfect. Because realistically? Perfection on the outside doesn't mean perfection on the inside. So thanks for stepping away from the (norm) and giving us a dose of reality!

This series is both compelling but also each book gets to about the halfway point and starts to feel like it’s dragging. I know this is only the second book, but this definitely isn’t a new favorite for me or anything. With the ending, I do want to keep reading the series because things are about to really kick up and get intense, plus I want all the stories for these characters, but also not in a rush to continue.

This series is darker and grittier than some of this author’s other books but they are equally as good. Smokey is trying his best to move beyond and be a better person than his old man, but most days he feels like he is just letting everyone in his MC down. Eliah is a professor who lives with pain everyday and is just trying to help his students. It all comes crashing down when he witnesses a murder meant to cause trouble for Smokey’s club. These two couldn’t be more different but they find a common ground. The attraction between these two is very palpable and neither one of the, is able to ignore it. This is a good book. EM Lindsey can craft characters like no one else.

Smokey burst into Eliah life thinking his brother was his prey only to find not just a professor helping a student but the man who would later become his obsession. Then a chance meeting in a bar Eliah finds the man who has starred in his dreams since he bursted into his house. First taking him home, later rescuing him from being in the wrong place at the wrong time witnessing a murder almost being killed and finally taking a bullet for him Smokey was fighting a losing battle because the part of him that's been locked up for so long Eliah has the key. Smokey fighting for the life of his club brothers, his brother and the man who was slowly becoming his life. LOVED IT!!😍😍

Smokey and Eliah are polar opposites and yet they are perfect for each other. Loved this story - great characters, good storyline, steam, and while S&E get their HEA, the story's bad guy issue isn't resolved. Am also a bit put out by the attitudes of Gunner and Hawke when it comes to Nate, but maybe that will get better in the next books. Great read...

I care about the members of the broken chains. I want to see them find happiness — though happiness has a lot of qualifiers in their world.
Smokey & Eliah are the first characters with the “I am immediately drawn to you, and that is why I am trying to stay away” that felt legitimate. Both could see that the right thing to to would to never see each other. But fate has other plans. Their story is a strong one. And I do want to know what happens with Rorey, Nate, Kicks, Jude, Hawke...

I don’t exactly understand why these men want to be in an MC. All of these men have darkness in their past, so they don’t feel like they belong on the “right” side of the law...but they also don’t want to act like their precious MCs. Once all these old vendettas are dealt with, what is the Broken Chains mission? They all seem like nice guys. What is their income?

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and moving
Reviewed in Australia on February 18, 2021
I almost don't have any words. Every time I think EM Lindsey has peaked, the next book is always better.

Backfire works perfectly as an extension of the series' running plotline about the trials faced by the Broken Chains MC; you can feel the tension creeping up slowly and constantly, and whilst some is dispelled at the climax of this story, it's still there, humming beneath the surface, waiting to continue into the next book.

Smokey is like a stray dog who has only know violence: desperate for kindness but so gun shy that kindness feels like a sort of violence in itself. Eliah has a perfectly fine life, a safe life; it is what it is, and what it isn't, is a life of violence or dubious morality.

These two men see each other so clearly, and it's beautiful to watch them move into each other's orbit and get stuck there, like magnets. Smokey especially seems unable to see himself as worthy of love and the way Eliah just kinda lets him be, in a way that slowly coaxes out his trust and love is really special.

I had to stop myself from highlighting every third paragraph, because each sentence is perfectly balanced and aching with meaning; no word is misplaced or ill-fitting, and nothing feels forced, the words flowing and bending with the plot so harmoniously.

You need to read book 1 of the Broken Chains series to really make the most of this book, and please take care if you're triggered by violence or discussions of past abuse.

I received an ARC and have chosen to leave an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every book written by E. M. Lindsey is well worth it...

... and this one is no exception. Characters have depth and passion. They’re likable. Yes they’re in a MC, but we can excuse lots of behaviors because deep down... the bikers care about doing the right thing. It’s not often you find a biker with a sense of morals, but I know where they are. Check out Lindsey’s Broken Chains series, and enjoy the ride.

This is a brilliant follow up to Tidal Wave and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Smokey is a complicated guy with a dark past and many secrets. Eliah is a wonderful character and he’s a perfect match for the life battered and scarred Prez. This motorcycle club series is a little different from other books I’ve read set in this kind of world. I really like how the author has brought these characters together into Broken Chains and given them a new family and purpose, I’m looking forward to the next book. This story is an exciting read with plenty of twists and turns that kept me glued to my kindle!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great addition to the series

Knowing Smokey was a tortured soul, unhappy with his previous life working under his father, he knows he doesn't want to be the same Prez for Broken Chains. He has a lot to think about; his brother Rory and how it went down with Gunner and Logan. Just to say, you really should read Tidal Wave before this one to gain insight into what has happened and why Smokey feels as he does.
This isn't your usual MC book, Smokey wants his brothers but not the violence that usually comes with a club, it's a sanctuary for the damaged members and prospects, as you'll see throughout this story. Eliah broke down his defences one by one and was a good match for him, not backing down when things got difficult.
I loved their interactions and the way they were drawn to each other even if they were from different walks of life.
I am truly excited for the next one in the series and can't wait to read it
