An old comrade and a young recruit stand beside him as the submarines set sail and Hayes faces up to the truth of war. Nowhere is safe and death is a single mistake away. However, the biggest threat may not come from the enemy across the ocean, but from the traitors and spies embedded in his own military. If Corin wants to survive the war he must find the traitor before all is lost.

Corin Hayes Series
When war broke out, it didn't last long. A few threats, a rattling of sabers, a promise of retaliation, and they unleashed their biological weapons on the world.
Populations crashed overnight. Cities emptied. Factories were abandoned. Roads stilled. Governments crumbled.
The corporations were ready, suspiciously so, some said. They had been exploiting the sea for years. Mines, factories, and outposts in the depths. Here was sanctuary they said. Here you could be safe. Here you can live and thrive.
And, by the way, you work for us, you fight for us, and we might give you just enough to live, but we'll claw it all back in rent, water rates, air rates and a thousand other ways.
Welcome to the brand-new world.
What a mess.

About the author

Seven Deaths of an Empire from Solaris Books due out June 2021.
Rep'd by Jamie Cowen.
After studying for a Diploma in Creative Writing, G R Matthews taught the subject at A Level and holds a BSc (Hons) in Geography. Currently working in education with a focus on Child Protection and Safeguarding, he finds time to write in the evenings between battles to get his children to go to bed and the desire to binge watch Eureka on Netflix. He has also studied (been hit a lot) Judo, Kung fu, Wing Chun and Kickboxing - and is not particularly skilled in any of them (hence the being hit a lot).
A D&D enthusiast, G R Matthews prefers the rogue (stabby stabby… who me?) as it suits his imagination and allows him to hide from all the things that go (accidentally) wrong during a dungeon crawl… (and no one can prove I set fire to that town… it was only a little fire, honest!). As a self-taught guitarist the best that can be said is that at least he doesn’t sing along to the songs (all the time) and the few thousand, over the years, who’ve heard him play (and sing) are mostly fine (some, to be fair, are still in recovery, but we wish them well).
At night, he sits and dreams that Spielberg, Lucas, Keanu Reeves, someone, anyone, reads his books thinks they’d make a great movie series (they would, that much is definitely true). With two children (where did they come from?), a wife (long suffering, caring, strong) and two hamsters (who actually show him the respect he deserves), G R Matthews is known for his self-deprecating sense of humour (true), his chiselled jawline (false), and his long career as a heart-throb film star (utterly false).

- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2019I should start by saying that if you haven't read any of the first 3 books, you probably should(and not just because they're great).
Anyway, the war between NOAH and VKYN that's been brewing the last few books has finally erupted. Corin, as is his way is enthusiastic and eager to do his patriotic duty (or something along those lines...).
But, pretty much as soon as he arrives, he manages to get embroiled in more trouble.
I won't go further into the plot to avoid spoilers.
The action was as tight and tense as always, with the claustrophobic confines amplifying this.
If you've read the other books, you know what you're getting (with some good twists...).
I loved this book (even more after reading the afterword...) andreally want more in the future!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2025The ending would be fine if this was TV and all I had to do was wait for next week's episode. Ya know? I've enjoyed the Corin Hayes story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Corin Hayes story
By now, you should know what to expect from Corin Hayes - a surly disregard for authority, monumental bad luck, and a stubborn streak a (nautical) mile wide. Watching him go back to war, though, is a surprisingly moving thing. He's both in his element - as highly-trained and experienced special-ops trooper - and out of it - as a misfit who doesn't like rule and regs (unless he re-writes them). This is a really enjoyable series which always delivers, and I can't wait for the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking read
Another great Corin adventure. From start to finish I was invested in our anti hero's attemps to complete a mission that he never wanted, in the harshest environments. Too many adventure novels present a hero who can do no wrong, but with Corin we get a refreshingly fallible protagonist. Can't wait for the next instalment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book
It was so good to be back under the water with Corin Hayes...
In this book Corin joins the navy and finds himself ordered towards the danger instead of finding it on his own. He has to work with others and does well as a teamplayer. Again his stubborness and his big mouth gets him into trouble but alsomade me laugh several times!
Somehow the under water setting give the books an eerie and claustrophobic feel that doesn't get old!
Another excellent book in the series that I highly recommend, cannot wait for book5!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hayes, our favourite antihero returns to find himself in more enthralling trouble.
Another great Corbin Hayes instalment. Tight, tense, funny, observational, dramatic and engaging. Destined to be made into movies. Read the previous books of the series and look forward to this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rollicking read
Another brilliant adventure for Corin Hayes and as usual things go South fast. A real page turner of a book
