    Completely unrealistic: every newbie's fantasy of going rogue and defeating the bad guy as well as the FBI. This wouldn't happen: a student wouldn't be out of the FBI academy and paired with a seasoned agent, solve two cases singlehandedly, and then get rewarded for bucking the system. But this is fiction and interesting and well written and fun to read.
    Ironically, despite all these anomalies, the one fiction that really annoyed me was that she got her own apartment halfway through the FBI academy. All recruits live on campus at Quntico. 1. It's mandatory. 2. Assignments are given out after graduation and could be anywhere in the country or the works, so also impractical.
    But a good read.

    Mackenzie White left her hometown in Nebraska to enter the FBI Academy. She'd been successful in capturing a serial killer and her fine work on the job drew the attention of one of the FBI agents. He'd urged her to go to the academy and join the Bureau. Everything there is so different from what she's used to but she knuckles down, determined to get the most she can from her classes.

    When she's suddenly called on to help on the case of two murdered women whose bodies were found in the local garbage dump, she can't believe her good fortune. Her partner, Agent Bryers seems glad to work with her. However, when Mackenzie messes up and her career is on the line it's a whole other ballgame.

    Love the main character in this one. Mackenzie is like a fish out of water on her new assignment. She has a difficult time following orders and it plays havoc with her career. At the same time, her partner and her supervisor can't fault her skills. She's dedicated and somewhat bullheaded but she's a fast learner and has a strong desire to succeed.

    What I also liked about the story was that in several chapters you get a closer look at the killer, his life, where he lives, how he chooses his victims. And of course, at the end, Mackenzie is somewhat of a hero even though she doesn't get the credit for it. Looking forward to the next book.

    Overall, it was okay ... I'm not sorry I spent the time reading it, but I was not totally impressed either. Many of the characters were not really all that likeable to me, especially the leadership that wanted to use her intuitive talents to investigate, but kept getting mad at her when she did the job they brought her in to do even though she wasn't even an agent yet. The main character had strong-woman traits, but was lacking people skills and definition in her personal life. There was a sense of urgency throughout, and some action scenes that kept things moving... but I didn't like that she was always in trouble for trying to solve the murders, or the way that the leader of the group rudely shut her down without taking the time to hear her side of things. I didn't feel this story represented the FBI as being all that effective or professional as far as investigating went ... the resources were there when needed, but it was a slow moving process to deploy the resources. Considering the seriousness of the crimes, it seems like the leadership would have lit a fire under everyone instead of bogging everything down. Based on this novel, Mackenzie might want to rethink her career choice ... the FBI in this novel would be a frustrating employer.

    This is the second book in the Mackenzie White series and it was as good as the first. The story is tense and moves quickly. I came to the end wondering how I got there so quickly. The writing of Blake Pierce took me there, of course. The skill of the author in description, conversation, and plot made for a smooth and exciting read. The main character, Mackenzie, is smart, intuitive, and she cares about the people caught up in crime by others. She is a bit impulsive as she plows through an investigation, but gets results. It makes those around frustrated and it works against her, but she is relentless.
    Want a tense mystery or watch how crime solved by a thinker? Try this! You won't be sorry!
