The Mages of Bennamore (Brightmoon Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 241 ratings

A stand-alone epic fantasy set in the Brightmoon world… Fen is used to hiding away in her coastal town, keeping her past and her magic far from prying eyes. But the aftermath of the brief war with Bennamore pits her against a different kind of magic, and throws her quiet life into turmoil, threatening to expose all her secrets. Mal’s job as guard to the mages of Bennamore has always been a bit dull, but that was before they were sent to bring magic to the resentful coastal folk. Before he knows it, he finds himself in the middle of riots, disappearances and thievery. And then there’s the infuriatingly snooty Fen, a woman he’d love to tame. The two will have to overcome their mutual dislike and join forces to untangle the dragon’s nest of deceit around them, or else their countries will be plunged back into disastrous war.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'The author has created a world with complex characters and a magic system that I thought was wonderful and unique. There are intriguing .plot twists that draw the reader in as you learn more about the main character which I found to be a complex individual.' - - Anne Monteith, Vine Voice.

'Pauline M. Ross is a master at creating multidimensional characters that you will be rooting for as you dive into her intelligent and highly creative plots. This book was a page turner that quickly evaporated any respect I had for the next day as I stayed up later and later to find out what happened next.'
- - J R Boles, author of Bringer of Light.

From the Author

All the books in the Brightmoon Annals are complete stories, and may be read independently of one another, with the exception of The Second God, which is a sequel. However, the later books contain fun references to events, characters and objects from the earlier books. For best enjoyment, the recommended reading order is:
  1. The Plains of Kallanash
  2. The Fire Mages
  3. The Mages of Bennamore
  4. The Magic Mines of Asharim
  5. The Fire Mages' Daughter
  6. The Dragon's Egg
  7. The Second God (Sequel to The Fire Mages' Daughter)
  8. Findo Gask's Apprentice
  9. The Dragon Caller
  10. The Return of the Mages

I live in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland with my husband. I like chocolate, whisky, my Kindle, massed pipe bands, long leisurely lunches, chocolate, going places in my campervan, eating pizza in Italy, summer nights that never get dark, wood fires in winter, chocolate, the view from the study window looking out over the Moray Firth and the Black Isle to the mountains beyond. And chocolate. I dislike driving on motorways, cooking, shopping, hospitals.

I also write traditional Regency romances as Mary Kingswood.

great book - Love the complexity of the plots within plots and the well developed characters. I read a lot and am actually rereading this one because it was so interesting. Good solid story telling by an accomplished writer who clearly has a great editor and proof reader - really enjoyed it, and literally can't put it down once started. There is so obviously a TON of backstory that isn't explained, yet it is alluded to and gives much depth to the story being told.

Even though all these Brightmoon books are happening on the same world, all are about different cultures, which may or may not have much to do with the others, so each book is fresh with new characters, new world views, and utterly fascinating interactions between everyday people and the wealthy, or their ruling classes. No great moralistic musings either, just great story telling with unexpected, inconsistent yet always present, magical connections.

My only suggestion is less romance and sex please - millions of us really don't care for reading about romance and the less there is of it in any book, the happier we are. The books in this series all have way too much of both for my tastes, otherwise, I really love them all (except the first one) and definitely have this author on my radar.

Normally this would not be my first choice of reading, but I do occasionally enjoy a good fae or fantasy type book so this one looked interesting. It did not disappoint, and kept me entertained and nearly glued to my book till it was completely read. A very well put together story, with a few twists I did not expect. Very well done!

Otherworldly and down to earth; somehow this book (in fact, the entire series of books) manages to be both. Magic abounds but is frustratingly beyond the understanding of the characters--sometimes a help to them, and sometimes just a stumbling block. A fast-paced tale of love and loss, and new love created but, more than any love story, it is a tale of hardships and redemption, with some much-needed triumphs over evil and other assorted bad stuff along the way. A story of family, but not the usual mom-and-pop-type family; this is about connections--with people, ancestors, magic, and the world. The connections necessary to make the most out of each characters' lives.

While some of the plot twists are obvious, just when you think you have it figured out, something unexpected sneaks up and takes you by surprise. And those twists you figured out? Yeah, they have their own sharp turns down the road until, all of a sudden, you are in brand new territory and rushing to figure out what comes next.

A definite must read for lovers of other words, magic, love and family stories, and stories of good triumphing over bad, as long as they are sufficiently complex to keep you from putting the book down!

I enjoyed this book very much and recommend it without reservation. The main character and through whose eyes we experience this world is a 40 year old woman, which initially surprised me very much. Since we saw through her eyes, it was crucial that she be a likeable character, and she was. Her enthusiasm for food was endearing, and her powers of observation and understanding are possibly the best I've ever seen demonstrated.

The age of the heroine was not the last surprise. They continued right up to the last page of the book. I don't intend to recap the events but will simply say that the world building was superb and interesting, the majority of the characters were interesting and well developed, and there is romance, but with plenty of bumps in that road. I'll read more in the series.

Since she could go anywhere and have any home why not stay in the house she grew to love I would have given it 4 1/2 stars if I could had it had that ending and taken out the foul language. Why is it so hard to come up with other ways of describing things??? How about " dog bite, that hurt" or instead of holy sh#t how about " blessed pontiff poop, or sainted cow manure. " In one way you are gifted with a great imagination and then seem to revert back to what everyone else does when it comes to using words. It's quite disappointing...

This is book 3 in a great series, all one the world of Brightmoon. I've read all 9 of the books and found the whole series a very good entertainment and like a visit to really another human world, similar and quite different than ours. Each one of the books is a great stand alone story, and they all fit together like a great tapestry. If you're looking for a great read, I really recommend the whole series, starting with book 1. It is clear the author is a woman, paying as much attention to how people dress as how they fight, there is a good mix of magic and romance, politics and fighting, yet the characters of both sexes are well developed and end up being people you miss when the stories are finished.

If you're a stickler for editing, pass this one by. Little things like misusing exacerbated, when what's wanted is exasperated can drive some readers mad. I liked the story well enough that I didn't mind too much. If you need deep character development, skip to the next author, this is light, fluffy mind fodder. If you need rich, detailed descriptions, you won't find it here. Calculated plot twists? Nope. Hard corps graphic love scenes? Heck no.

But if what you like is light predictable fantasy with a touch of romance, this is your story.
A little bit of magic, a little, romance, a touch of dragon watching.

I've been reading fantasy novels for over 40 years and Pauline M Ross' books are up there with the best I've read. The main characters are well thought out, the supporting characters believable and the story moves at a good pace. The world and how it works is an interesting twist on tales of magic, and the interactions between characters very natural and believable. If you want an enjoyable fantasy novel that isn't just a rehash of story lines that have been done to death already, give this a go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fen has many secrets
Reviewed in Canada on November 4, 2018
I was surprised the main character of this book is a middle aged record keeper. How could this person be interesting? Well, let me tell you, she definitely has her secrets! There were times too when I was totally ticked off the character Fen but there were lots of twists and turns in this story. A great read!

4.0 out of 5 stars While it can be enjoyed by new readers
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 20, 2015
This third story in the series follows another set of characters in a new corner of the Brightmoon world. While it can be enjoyed by new readers, the subtle references to the previous stories works as a pleasant reward for loyal readers returning to Pauline M Ross's fantasy world.

Fen quickly became my favourite protagonist of the series by feeling very much like a real person. She doesn't have any magical abilities, (at least until she meets the titular mages), and her skeptical personality makes her relatable and easy to like. As the mysteries and drama unfolds, I found myself drawn into the story and quite keen to know how it would all end. While I found the pace of the final third to be a little slow, everything comes to a satisfying conclusion.

If you're after an elegantly written fantasy romp sprinkled with a good dose of romance, then I'd find The Mages of Bennamore (and both previous stories) easy to recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's been some time that I've enjoyed a book so much
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 14, 2016
It's been some time that I've enjoyed a book so much. The characters are believable, and it was interesting getting to know them and to see how Fen's (the main character) attitude slowly changed during the story.

How great was it to read a book without all the obligatory spelling/grammar mistakes too! That was a refreshing bonus. I shall certainly look out for ore from this author.

Well done, Pauline Ross! I'm now a committed fan.
