About the author

Julie Naismith is a certified trainer and self-confessed separation anxiety geek. She hates the convention of writing about herself in the third person, so...let's start that again!
Hi, I’m Julie! I help you and your dog overcome separation anxiety so that you can both get your lives back on track
I'm a specialist separation anxiety trainer and behaviour consultant, and author of the separation anxiety training guide, Be Right Back!
When my dog Percy – the little guy in the picture – developed separation anxiety I became a woman on a mission – determined to cut through the tons of incorrect advice to find how to fix it.
Having successfully fixed Percy's separation anxiety I decided I wanted to help other owners get their dogs over separation anxiety.
I apprenticed with the world’s leading force-free, evidence-based trainer, Jean Donaldson. And graduated with Honors from Jean’s Academy for Dog Trainers (You can find Jean's many brilliant books here on Amazon).
Before I became a separation anxiety coach, I was a people coach. Now I combine my people coaching skills with my passion for separation anxiety training.
This makes me different from other trainers and behaviourists.
With me, you’re not just working with a dog trainer. You’re working with someone who knows how to get you and your dog over separation anxiety.
You're also working with someone who's been in your shoes. And who knows all about separation anxiety struggles.
Today, I work with hundreds of separation anxiety cases, via my membership club Separation Anxiety Heroes™. On top of that, I help thousands of owners in my Facebook Group Support Group. So if you’re looking for someone who knows their separation anxiety onions, here I am!
I'm from the UK but now I’m lucky enough to live in the Canadian Rockies (I swapped rain for cold!) with my husband, my recovered separation-phobic dog, Percy, Percy’s sister India, and Tex the rescue from Houston, Texas.
It can be hard to stay the course with separation anxiety training (I know – I’ve been there). But with my book, I'm here to get you through it.
Every step of the way.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2022There is so much bad advice on the internet for separation anxiety. You know the whole “once you get the 30 minutes - you can start leaving your dog all day!” or “just give them a kong stuffed with peanut butter” or “don’t come back until your dog has stopped crying!” - I tried all this stuff and my dog only got worse. I couldn’t even go to the bathroom by myself in the middle of the night - I had to bring my dog with me or else it was instant panic and destruction.
Enter Julie’s book. This book is so well written and explains separation anxiety and WHY the methods mentioned above just don’t work for dogs who suffer from true separation anxiety. This book and Julie’s fb group along with her trainers who moderate have truly changed my dog’s life (and mine!). Julie is realistic about what a difficult condition this is to treat and doesn’t give any false promises. However, if you follow her methods you WILL see progress. If you join her fb group, you will also get encouragement from others (those with dogs also going through the program and certified trainers). Connecting with this community has made me feel so much less alone and I love seeing other dogs making progress! I can’t thank Julie enough for making her methods so affordable and accessible (I looked into hiring a trainer before I bought Julie’s book. Many trainers won’t work with SA dogs and those that do charge around $800 per month).
Those looking for a quick fix - you’re not going to find one. There is no quick fix for separation anxiety. Please save yourself from the agony my dog and I went through in the beginning and just skip straight to getting this book. The journey to treating separating anxiety is a long one that takes dedication and consistency. It requires so much patience but it is SO worth it when you see you dog begin to relax in your absence. I love watching my dog’s confidence grow and it’s been thanks to this book and the journey it’s taken us on!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2023I’ve had 6 months of guilt, feeling like her separation anxiety was somehow my fault. After being recommended to buy this book in a Facebook group I’m in, this significantly changed my demeanor toward, and knowledge to overcoming my pup’s separation anxiety. Within just one week of leaving my dog for seconds at a time, randomizing the amount of time, slowly increasing how many seconds she’s left, I’ve see a 100% increase in the time she’s been able to be alone. In seconds, this means we’ve gone from 30 seconds to 60 seconds. Which doesn’t seem like much, but when you look at the statistic (100% increase in time left alone) that’s amazing. For the first time in 6 months of owning my rescue, I have hope. So what I recommend to you is to buy the book, read it cover to cover, expect to re-define your spontaneity and freedom for a few months, keep a journal of your actions and your dogs progress, and do the hard work. You’ll be a happier human and you’ll absolutely have a happier pup. GOOD LUCK TO US ALL and know you can do hard things :)

- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2021I am glad I bought this book. I rescued a dog from the county kennel and he had many issues. I used this book as a guideline. The book gave me hope that my little dog could get over some of his separation anxiety.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2023I am a rescuer, and many of the dogs we get have been abandoned or have lost their families thru no fault of their own. I try to help adopters make their new dog feel safe and secure, so I give them lots of info. Most books on this topic are written by trainers and seem a little overwhelming to adopters (i.e., they end up not reading them). This book is written from the perspective of a dog owner, for other dog owners, so it's perfect. I expect I will be buying many more copies of this book to send home with the doggies.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2023I adopted a senior dog during COVID and she became hyper-attached and developed separation anxiety when we moved. Even at 11 years old this book has helped me no longer feel trapped in my home with an anxious dog. After about 3 months of working with trainers, my vet, and the methods of this book, my dog’s progress has accelerated immensely. Never give up on working with your dog; read this book and stay consistent. It does wonders!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2019We all love our dogs and separation anxiety is terrible and lonely, until now. Without shifting the blame onto owners for what is largely a genetic issue, Julie Naismith uses research-supported methods of subthreshold training to address the real issues. How can we help our dogs get through day-to-day separations with less stress and anxiety (and barking and destroying the living room)? How can we address issues that arise during the training or that flare up after we've moved into a new home? Shake off the blame that society dumps on you for “spoiling” your dog! It's not you. It's genetics. And you can finally do something about it. Starting now, with this book. ** I don't know the author. I'm a fan of how this approach tackles the issue of separation anxiety head-on without judgment or blame.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just meh (and very inaccurate about medication)
It's an okay book. However you can sum it up in one sentence: "Gradually expose your dog to more alone time and never go over his/her treshold".
The rest is filling. There is one element which is blatantly wrong. She recommends fluoxetine (Prozac). Cambridge University did a metastudy which included all the big studies on the effectiveness of this 'medicine'. Compared to placebo the positive effect was so little it wasn't worth it. Both the placebo group as the fluoxetine group got quite a bit better (8 and 10 points on the Hamiltont test), however, they were sure it was the medication that did it while in fact they were responsible for the improvement themselves)
Against an active placebo (the only way you can truly double blind test this stuff) fluoxetine didn't do better. Among humans at least the side effect of this 'medication' was that they have a 400% bigger chance of killing themselves.
Please don't give your dog antidepressants.

5.0 out of 5 stars Behaviourist recommended!
**** You didn't cause this, your dog isn't a bad dog, and there IS a tried and tested process for treating separation anxiety **** These are the core messages of this book!
It's been on my desk for a while and I finally got a chance to read it over the Christmas holidays. I was pleased to find it accessible, friendly and packed with good, practical advice - from setting up your environment and management to designing training plans to help treat your dog's separation anxiety. The book is honest about there being no quick fixes (there really aren't!), but also has an uplifting tone that recognises anyone with a separation anxiety dog is doing their best and that this is great!
I am a Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist by profession, and had been seeing separation anxiety cases in dogs for some time but Julie and her approach have given me a renewed passion for supporting clients who face this super stressful and life-limiting issue.
If you are a dog owner looking for help, you won't go wrong in buying this book. It is by far the most up to date information out there at the moment (believe me when I say there is an awful lot of outdated advice that will trap you or send your training off down the wrong track!). Not only does it give you techniques and tips that are scientifically proven, it is written by someone with real lived experience of owning a separation anxiety dog, which is really helpful in acknowledging and coaching the difficult emotions we humans experience when we find ourselves battling through behaviour issues.
Depending on how severe or established your dog's problems are you may still need to seek professional help for your dog's separation issues, however this book will give you the information you need to get training straight away. If the time comes that you hit a road block, Julie gives advice on where to look for further advice and even includes sections on medications and how to choose a trainer to work with. I defy anyone not to find something of use in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Positive training to help your dog be ok when you go out!
This book gave me the tools to help my dog overcome separation anxiety. With the help of medication (something the book goes over), the training methods helped my Cavoodle become more independent, and now we can leave her (with her dog and cat siblings) while we’re at work! This is such a relief after months of having pet sitters and family look after her because she used to panic as soon as we left! Thank you Julie for writing this amazing book!
