Risky (Reckless Love Book 1) Kindle Edition
My life in the NFL is a dream. Paid to play ball, to hang out with my team, to travel all across the country. I have everything I ever hoped for.
Except the guts to come out.
When my boyfriend gets tired of hiding in the closet and walks out on me, I make an easy decision: no more dating until I’m through with football. These are the best years of my career, and there’s no telling when retirement will hit. Head down. Focus. No regrets.
And then I wake up from a drunken night out with the team to find a new number in my phone. A Friend.
He doesn’t know who I am and I don’t know who he is, and having someone to talk to anonymously is freeing. He’s funny and a total flirt. The first name on my phone when I wake and the last person I speak to before I fall asleep at night.
He’s also the man I’m falling for.
I want to meet him, but that means revealing who I am, and as much as I want to trust him, it’s still risky. Risky he’ll out me. Risky someone will see us together.
I promised myself no more dating for this reason.
But he makes me want to take the risk.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2020Swoon. I loved Taryn and Elliot. I love a good closeted athlete story, and this one totally delivered. I was immediately drawn into their story. My heart ached for Taryn, trying to drown his loneliness of being a closeted athlete in drinks with teammates. If not for those “celebratory” drinks, he may not have met Elliot. I loved the way they met. I was so there for their flirty texts and phone calls. I loved their chemistry and developing relationship. It felt so natural and genuine. Each of them were so invested before they even knew it. While they tried to stay apart as their jobs did not mesh, that draw was already too strong for each of them. I really enjoyed the underlying storyline of Elliott’s job. It was A twist I should have seen coming, but didn’t! This was a fantastic read, and Saxon is quickly becoming one of my new favorite authors. I devoured this read, and I’m eager to pick up the next in this series to see if Liam gets his own HEA.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2020Saxon James is a completely new author to me. And I must admit, I chose this read because of the hunk of a man on the cover. I mean, look at those pecs and shoulders! Sure, the level of drool-worthiness of the cover model might be a somewhat subpar way of choosing my reading. But luckily it worked out this time since Bet on Me was pretty awesome.
I really liked this story. I don’t know what it is about hot, gay athletes meeting the love of their life which eventually leads to them coming out that I find so captivating. But in my book, that trope never gets old.
Taryn and Elliot are very different characters, but it works. Taryn is the sweetest guy looking for someone to share his life with while Elliot tries to keep their relationship strictly physical so as not to get hurt. It’s beautifully described how these very different men grow to love each other.
There’s two very distinct parts in this story. The first half of the book is a slow-paced description of a tentative relationship growing more serious. In the second part, the story picks up pace when Elliot’s illegal bookmaking gets him in serious trouble. The turn the story took when that happened had me literally gasping in shock, so that was great writing by James. However, the final resolution of it all was perhaps a little too simple. An easy out that left me a bit unsatisfied as a reader. Also, Elliot’s healing capabilities felt a bit magical which I’m sure wasn’t the intent.
There aren’t that many side-characters in Bet on Me, but the ones who are there I would have loved to read more about. Elliot’s bestie Rainer will get his own book, Good Times and Tan Lines, but I’d much rather read about Taryn’s friend Zane. Hopefully he’ll be up next after that.
The smut-factor of Bet on Me is pretty average for an M/M read. There are some hot nudy scenes, but nothing to get too worked up about. The story is more of a romance in that aspect. But don’t let that discourage you 😉 this is still a great story for all man-lovers.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2020Why did I have to go and actually like taryn. I read calling his bluff first so I absolutely team Liam and then I went an read this, and now I’m glad taryn got his HEA too. Taryn redeemed himself. I loved him and Elliot. I already knew I was going to love Elliot based off of his appearances in book 2 though. Highly recommend this entire series as it currently stands with the 1st 2 books out. The writing is smooth and the plots are fresh and entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 20233.5 stars. Finding love in an unexpected way, these two have so many reasons to walk away but there’s clearly a draw between them. Being with a bookie should make Taryn run the other way and Elliot being the decent guy he is knows how difficult any kind of relationship could be and it probably wouldn’t last. The intrigue was an added surprise and I enjoyed the storyline.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2020Written in dual first person POV. Good amount of M/M sexy times and some humor. There were a couple of offhand “dose of reality” comments that I could have done without but my biggest issue was with Elliott’s job and life plan. You know from the beginning that his job is illegal and that he’s been doing it for two years with a plan to stay with it for 5 more years in order to build his nest egg. Then he’ll find a legal job that he likes. I found too many issues with this - 7 years at an illegal job without getting caught is not a good life plan, gap in work history, no coercion to stay at the job - to like Elliott in the beginning so it took a while to get into the book. Some parts of the plot were predictable but there were a few surprises. Also, just a warning - there is some violence against one of the main characters at about 75% that is descriptive so you might need to skip to the beginning of the next chapter if you can’t handle it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2020I started the wrong way with book 2 and read this one right after. But it didn't take away anything from my reading experience and I love both books.
A closeted football player and a bookie who's never been in a relationship should spell disaster, but instead the unexpected attraction leads to something much more.
Both Taryn and Elliot are great MCsanc I enjoyed every page of their story. I'm really happy that I've found another favourite author!
And Iwill have to go and see what Elliots best friend was up to on Ibiza now.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2020Excellent book. Very well written. The story line grabbed my interest from the beginning and kept it for the whole book. This book is definitely a keeper to reread. I look forward to reading more books from Saxon James.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2020These two men had a lot going on. Between Taryn's breakup and being closeted and Elliott's non-relationship status, it took a lot of trust building and patience for them to get their happily ever after. I love that we see Rainer while he was on the mend to go back to Colton, and we got to see glimpses of Zane and Liam. This was a really good book about finding love when you least expect it.

5.0 out of 5 stars “I’ll do anything to keep the guy who makes me feel alive, who paints a rainbow right over my heart”
5⭐️ I am loving this. The plot is so good. It’s like an NFL player and an illegal booking agent so forbidden right?! Anyways you can see straight up that it’s gonna be so tricky for them to be together and there’s so many risks as the name of the book implies, but I was just like how are they gonna make this work?
I was so hooked and so entertained by this whole story I loved it. It was a really interesting insight into that darker side of professional sports which I hadn’t really thought of or considered before so it was a really cool read from that perspective. It got dark though wow. I didn’t expect that from a Saxon book, all her others have been super sweet and adorable mostly so this dark side was intriguing and heartbreaking.
Those plot twist those like legit little crumbs being trailed throughout, but I didn’t pick any of them up so good! Loved this read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Elliot & Taryn.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read
This was a great read! I found the characters well developed, the storyline flowed well, and the mystery regarding the match fixing kept things interesting. I did feel the ending was a little rushed - we don't get to see any fallout from either Elliot's job or Taryn's coming out, which was a shame given it was their biggest fears for the whole book. Otherwise a enjoyable read, and I look foward to reading more in the series.

Vond dit verhaal een beetje lijken op de fake boyfriend serie van Eden Finley. Wel goed verhaal.
