Beyond Good & Evil (Victor Loshak) Paperback – September 18, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
A string of brutal home invasion murders terrifies Dade County, Florida. The killer strikes in the dead of the night, savages innocent people in their beds, wipes out entire families.
He attacks at random. Rich. Poor. Young. Old. No one is safe.
When the city sleeps, he comes alive. Stalks the night. Walks among us.
The investigation is hopeless. There's little physical evidence to work with, and the killer's chaotic behavior makes him as unpredictable as he is dangerous.
What drives someone to such violence? And how can anyone make sense of such brutality?
The task force leading the investigation needs a profiler, and there's only one man for the job.
Loshak. Special Agent Victor Loshak.
The 53 year-old likes his Dunkin' Donuts coffee shaken, not stirred. And now, for the first time, he's on his own.
But how far will this case push him?
In recent years, Loshak has slowed down some. He relies on more wit than grit these days, often playing a mentor role to his partner, Violet Darger. Until now, she always had more than enough grit for both of them.
But Darger isn't around this time, and a killer this aggressive will push Loshak to his limits.
And beyond.
Yeah, he'll need to find that grit again... or die trying.
This pulse-pounding thriller will have you holding your breath until the final page. Fans of John Sandford, Karin Slaughter, Michael Connelly, and Lisa Gardner should check out the Victor Loshak series.

About the authors
L.T. Vargus grew up in Hell, Michigan, which is a lot smaller, quieter, and less fiery than one might imagine. When not click-clacking away at the keyboard, she can be found sewing, fantasizing about food, and rotting her brain in front of the TV.
L.T. Vargus now lives in New Mexico with her special man friend/writing partner, Tim McBain.
She likes YouTube videos of cute animals, mystery novels, punk rock, and pizza.

People say your author bio should tell the world why you write. I write because life is short, and I want to make something awesome before I die.

E. M. Smith came by his redneck roots honestly, his barbwire tattoo dishonestly, and his sobriety slowly. Recovery isn't a sprint, according to his friends, it's a marathon. That's probably why he turned into such a fitness geek when he quit drinking.
You can call him Mason if you want to. He just uses his initials to seem professional.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI like the character of Victor. He is an aging FBI agent hunting a serial killer with ice in his veins and a stone where his heart should be. He killed whole families. Victor is lured to the crime scene by a newspaper reporter. They work the case together. While he is hunting the serial killer, he takes care of his ex-wife’s harassing landlord. Highly recommend, very suspenseful!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI LOVE E.M. Smith and this is the reason I started the series. E.M. Smith writes in a cool way that engages the reader and since he was part of the writing team for this series, I was in! The storyline is typical.....The chase of a serial killer by law enforcement. What's unique is the main character.....Loshak. I was disappointed. I believe Loshak is 53 years old and every word or action he uttered or completed was that of a washed-out 100-year-old man. As Alexa was reading the story, I would yell, "Loshak really, you're in your fifties. Get your ass in gear. WTF!" Loshak's 'old man might as well be dead' mentality was depressing. Like a total downer. At one point I wanted to stop Alexa from reading because I was pissed. Loshak watching his unsanctioned partner bleed out all while he's having a midlife crisis meltdown was just about my undoing. Yet, I let Alexa continue to read because.....The storyline is decent. The descriptors are really good and easy to visualize. The "partnership" between Loshak and the reporter Spinx is hilarious and easy-going. It's a great balance and insightful. The serial killer was a hot mess. His character would be a therapist's dream to analyze. The showdown, well I was shook! Like really. I had Alexa re-read that chapter because I was shooketh! 😂I'm going to complete the series because well, I purchased it. I hope the character Loshak gets bigger cajones and the unsanctioned partnership between Loshak and Spinx continues because of its funny and interesting storyline.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTheir writing flows so smoothly, with descriptions so vivid, that absorbs you into their story. While I guess Darger must be taking time off with Owen, I missed her. I never thought of Loshak being old but it happens to us all. I love that I get the story from so many perspectives. It just makes me hate the bad guy all the more.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a well written book. Lots of suspense, not a lot of editing errors, good plot, great ending would I read more by these authors? Yes. Would I read another book with Loshak as the hero? No way. Loshak should be sitting behind a desk doing the brain work in solving cases. He was good at that part. He failed at everything else. He failed his wife after the death of their daughter to cancer , he failed her again after the divorce, he failed his reporter companion, Spinks, who ultimately covered for him, and he failed as an active FBI agent. So this book itself was great, but to do a series about this loser? Not for me. It worked for one book. Not for a whole series . I would have given the book a 5 if it was a stand alone book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAnother great book that you need to read. It keeps you turning the pages and you don’t want to stop reading. I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt felt weird at first to read a book in this series without Violet in it, but I really enjoyed getting to know Loshak better. I love the way he consciously reads people and uses his knowledge of human behavior to function in everyday life, not just as a detective. I love his self awareness. I love his measured, experienced approach to life and his job and I love his honesty with himself and other people. I guess I pretty much am a fan of Loshak. He's pretty cool.
There is a terrifying serial killer in this book. And the story is riviting. It's a disturbing book. But seeing the world through Loshak's eyes is really what makes this such a great story.
Loshak is a man who is simultaneously dedicated to an ideal and a slave to his own nature, and he hasn't always been honest about what drives him. He wants to be able to control things, and he is totally aware of this need he has behind the badge and the noble aims of law enforcement. He knows how flawed the system is, and he knows that he is not in control of anything, not even his own body. But yet he can't stop trying.
Violet and Victor are both at a turning point. There is a lot happening in these books beyond just the thriller genre. I love how substantial these stories are under the surface. Can't wait for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Darkly Satisfying
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSo Tim McBain and L.T.Vargus have E.M.Smith on board to add to the mix now, but did it change things?
Gladly, no.
This first Loshak book was a really enjoyable, fast paced read. Picking up a fun sidekick in the form of a local reporter, they are on the trail of a very nasty serial killer, who kills indiscriminately.
One of the things that I loved about this was that the M.O. (or lack thereof), reminded me in places of both 'Night Stalker' cases - The 'Green River Rapist' and also Ramirez himself.
This is unashamedly gory in places, but has the trademark humour from the 'Darger' series throughout too, to keep things nicely balanced. There are the great spots of profiling, staying true to the theme and the killers' memories of past abuses, are nice touches to show a damaged mindset and potential reasoning for things to come.
Loshak is a great character, who has developed over the series into a loved and respected partner. His personal grievances are explained in greater detail here and add an element of frailty to him which makes him all the more likeable because of it.
This is a really enjoyable read. I look forward to the next instalment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseReally enjoyed this book. I thought it was well written and fast paced. The deaths are a bit hard to read but definitely rings true. Liked the relationship between Spinks and Loshak. The sadness of losing a child and how it can tear a relationship apart also rang true.
