Bitten: A Gay Urban Fantasy Novel (Graveyard Shift Book 1) Kindle Edition
Multiple murders, blood-drained bodies, and a rookie to train: work has suddenly got quite hectic for police constable Jesse Ross. When a sharp-toothed suspect is stolen from his care and evidence of something unnatural begins to unfold, it can only get worse. Jesse quickly finds himself drawn into a dangerous case that should have nothing to do with him – alongside the first man to catch his interest for a long time, and the last man he’s allowed to want. Despite his need to know, Jesse fully intends to leave the investigating to the detectives – but soon takes a bite to his own neck, making it hard to ignore even the minute possibility of something truly sinister, a possibility that no one else seems to want to entertain. And the rookie? Well, it’s equally hard to ignore the man who has his back through every twist, turn, and tiny mental breakdown. Luckily for Jesse, he can’t truly worry about his future or his feelings until he’s finished worrying about making it out alive, and there’s an ancient evil with other plans.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2020As mentioned this starts off a little slow but builds up gradually to a great ending. It's basically a very realistic story of discovering that vampires exist. The main character is a British cop who stumbles into a vampire's plot. He also has to deal with a new trainee that he is falling for.
I don't want to give anything away but both plot lines are handled very well in my opinion. The MC struggles to accept that vampires are real just as most of us would in real life. He also has very conflicting feelings about his new trainee who is not only attractive but charming as well. The obvious power imbalance in their relationship is a major concern for him, as it should be.
No mpreg, no sparkly vampires and 2 gay men who are both strong characters without being interchangeable with a man and woman dynamic. Pretty well written and edited as well.
If I had any complaints it would be about the British police terminology. I did have to Google a couple of times. And as I've said the beginning is a little slow but once things got going it's hard to put down.
I went ahead and bought it after reading on Kindle Unlimited and am now moving on to book 2.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2020So, as far as whether I recommend reading? Maybe? That’s what I’ll give you. Maybe I recommend this. I personally like gay UF and sometimes gay PNR, so I was glad to read this one. My problem was the characters were often TSTL, which annoys me. However, I actually ended up liking this book because of the Vampires. I’m going to read the next one (because of the vampires), and hope that Franklin (the vampire) makes another appearance.
One of the other reviews gets up in arms about the way the characters acted after getting bit, however, I think the response was reasonable for the characters. They teetered on the edge of admitting the possibility of the supernatural and trying to come up with less insane explanations. I actually liked that a whole lot more than getting one taste of something not quite right and jumping into the supernatural boat. I mean, even a fan of the genre, if I came across “vampire” bites in real life, I would definitely go to mental health patient suspect over real vampire first. That’s just logical and even more so for a police officer who deals with craziness on a regular basis. So, f@&# that one star review. This book didn’t deserve that kind of treatment.
Alright, so, maybe you want to read this book. I’m going to read the next one. I’ll let you know how it goes. 😏 Hopefully our heroes aren’t quite as TSTL as they were in this one. And hopefully Franklin makes another appearance.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2020I found this book a bit slow. The story was confusing until the last quarter of the book. The two heroes were slow to recognize their feelings for each other. The vamp was funny.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2021Policing is a lot of paperwork, dealing with difficult people, and the occasional dead body. Even if by dealing you Jean standing around guarding the crime scene.
Just the usual stuff...until the bite marks happen...
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2019I definitely enjoyed this book! Characters are unique and the author decided to go with vampires that inspire fear instead of just sexy thoughts( though there maybe some sexy vampires later?)
One review said they were done after the “bite” and I got to say I found that a bit harsh. I enjoyed that Jesse took the more realistic approach of doubting what was outside the norm. When the book began this was not a world where supernatural forces might stalk, and the cast reacts accordingly. When faced with something that redefines a character’s world view, doubt and a bit of self delusion are to be expected. That being said, the author does not pointlessly draw it out once Jesse reaches his conclusion and while trying to adjust to his redefined world view, he has a muderer to catch, a plot to unravel, and possibly a relashionship he’d not seen coming.
This book is more plot driven than romance driven, but even though Jesse can be a bit of a grumpy cat, theres definitely the potential for more and plenty of adorable moments.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2020one of the worst books I've read this year
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2020I loved both books so far in this series and hope it continues! The plot is quite different from the usual and the writing is very polished. The events involve two regular British patrolmen who are dragged into supernatural events because of their job. They must deal with life and death decisions alone because no one would believe them and the vampires themselves won't allow any mortals to reveal their existence. The romance between them is sweet and the entire atmosphere of the books is very spooky! A fun read!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2018I got to where the main character was bitten and the reason for the and the main character's response to being bitten are inane. I don't care what happens in the rest of story it would not be able to make for the stupidity surrounding of "The Bit".

5.0 out of 5 stars Scary and sweet
Really enjoyed this, genuinely creepy in places and set in a British 'PC Plod' environment which makes the creepy even creepier! Also a thoroughly lovely romance. Looking forward to the next!
