About the authors
Clive West was born in the West Country of England in the early 60's. He was educated at a traditional English public school before going on to university to study civil engineering. Over the years, he has worked as a civil engineer, tutor of maths and science, schools quizmaster, employment agency boss, and writer.
His work includes a collection of short stories with twists and a full-length novel called 'The Road' about the consequences of corruption on ordinary people. Another collection of short stories and the second part of Blakefields Mansion, a Victorian romance duology (which he is co-authoring), are soon to be released.
He has also written a book about lymphedema, a disease he now suffers from and a book about helping job-seekers with their interviews.
Clive now lives in a rebuilt farmhouse in the Umbrian region of Italy along with Damaris, his writer wife of 22 years and their three rescue dogs. Apart from his fictional work, Clive also writes commercial non-fiction on a variety of topics but especially relating to business and employment.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2020I really enjoyed this story. I loved how the author was able to write such a book of a historical setting, along with the dialect and imagery of that time period. There was so much drama in this story. A great page turner for avid readers!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2016If you loved Downton Abbey, you will love this book. The story is set in Victorian England and relates the story of 2 young ladies growing up together. Abigail and Isabelle were of different social classes and this fact plays out during the book. While a great historic fiction read, it also is a great lesson in the manners and customs of the Victorian era - when your reputation was something to be valued and protected, when matches were arranged by parents for their advantages for the family, when some behavior was not to be talked about & punishable by death or banishment. I was sorry to see the story end and look forward to other books by these authors!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story!
First time I've read a historical novel for a long time and thoroughly enjoyed this one. Right from the start, the reader is aware something has made Isabel run from the house she was staying at leaving behind her best friend.
The story then starts at the beginning and from the getgo there is intrigue, something is going on and young naïve Isobel was slow to pick it up. The reader will get it immediately but has to keep reading to pick up the pieces of the jigsaw to fit them together.
A great story that deserves reading for lovers of this kind of fiction and why it hasn't got more reviews, I don't know. Read It!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well written period drama
If you like a good period drama then you will love this. The narrative pulls you in from the first page, at first I thought it was going to be another 'flowery romance with the usual predictable ending. But oh no! this is Jane Austen with a bite, a tale of social taboo and skullduggery with a twist of an ending. Strong characters throughout help jostle this tale along at a good old rate. Highly recommended.
