Blank Canvas (Irons and Works Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 2,333 ratings

The last thing in the world Samuel Braga ever thought he be doing is fighting to keep his daughter.

When a spinal cord injury prevents Sam from following his career in football, he flees his home in Alaska and finds himself working at a tattoo shop with an old friend. It’s not the life he imagined, especially when he ends up getting custody of his cousin’s baby, but soon Maisy and work become his entire world.

Then the retired NHL player Niko Pagonis rolls into town.

Niko is effortlessly charming and incredibly good looking—and he’s interested in Sam. But Niko couldn’t have showed up at a worse time. DCS has been making Sam jump through hoops to keep his daughter, and it’s starting to look like he might lose the case.

Sam doesn’t have time for romance, especially with a man who would never understand that Sam’s daughter has to come first. But as things get harder, and Niko doesn’t back away, Sam starts to wonder if maybe love really can withstand the worst the universe has to offer.

A real life feeling romance

A real life feeling romance
I wrote a review for the first book in this series and I’m back to write another. I love this series because it’s nothing like I’ve ever read before. They’re not like your typical romance novels and that’s a good thing. I love that these books have a very real setting. It’s more about every day life struggles and situations then the classic flowers and fairy tale romances. But don’t get me wrong there is plenty of romance in this series. I’m terrible at writing reviews but I just wanted to say something about how much I love this series and this author! I shall be waiting for more books in this series! (Plus I about the first book in the boxing series!)

Wow. I just....wow. I think this is the first book to actually make me cry this year. This one hurt my heart, it just took all my feelings and shoved them in a blender. Like, holy crap, this book was so heavy and yet, it was still filled with so much love and romance.

I loved Sam and Niko. There aren’t enough words to describe how I loved their story. It was filled with heartbreak, misunderstandings, and reconciliation. I also really loved that Sam’s disability wasn’t a deal breaker or fetishized in anyway. I don’t have a disability, so I’m not 100% sure how good the representation is in this book, but I feel like Sam’s disability was handled very well. It felt like it was well researched and treated with respect.

This book was very open about all the things that come with Sam’s SCI (spinal cord injury) and with being in a wheelchair. Including all the discrimination. The biggest example being Maisy’s adoption. I’ve never wanted to smack a character as much as I want to smack Maisy’s caseworker. My heart broke for Sam and his struggle to officially make Maisy his daughter.

This book was amazing and heartbreaking and lovely. I’m so happy that I found this series that normalizes disabilities. And features disabled characters in love. And that doesn’t try to make the characters change every little thing about themselves to fit someone else’s definition of normal. This book is getting a solid five stars.

This was an emotionally very intense story. The author presented Sam’s disability and his daily struggle with the simplest things of life in a realistic way, without prettifying or hiding anything. Life on a wheelchair in our “normal” world is tough, but it shouldn’t be. And I thank the author for this book and for showing that a man on a wheelchair can experience love, family and friendship just as anybody, perhaps even more deeply and intensely because he knows that his loved ones are going against social preconceptions when staying with him, supporting him and loving him.

I read the first book of the story and there Niko’s failed date with Derek and his subsequent introduction to the group of Sam’s friends were important moments of the story and I would have loved to read Niko’s POV in this second book. Unfortunately the author skipped the description of those events in this book and I think the reader thus misses an important background information about Niko that would shed a new light on his personal growth and on his true goodness.

I’m looking forward to the third instalment of this series!

This is a great book but not a light book so if you are looking for light fluff this one won't be for you. If you are looking for a angsty story full of feels this will fit the bill! Sam is trying to adopt the Maisy, little girl he's been a foster Dad to for 3 years - she's the daughter of a cousin of his and he took her as an infant so she didn't have to stay in a group foster home. It's been a struggle but it's love all the way for them both. Social services was basically fine with him being in a wheel chair, gay and working as a tattoo artist until he wanted to adopt. Now it's one hoop to jump through after another. Luckily he has a wonderfully supportive "family" through his job at Iron and Works - the tattoo shop where he works. Then there's Niko - former NHL player whose career was over almost before it began due to a terrible injury. A few years later and he's living the same town as Sam, an accountant, hoping to open his own restaurant and friends of a couple guys Sam works with. Niko has the habit of putting his foot in his mouth at the worst times but he and Sam click. Sam doesn't have time for a relationship and Niko's not sure but friendship grows even as they try to push back deeper feelings. I love the closeness and "family" with the Iron and Works group. I love the journey Sam and Niko take through attraction, friendship and love - and yes there are bumps but the HEA is better for it. I hated the jerking around Sam went through with Social Services but sadly I know some who have had to fight this battle like this. Both Sam and Niko are so sure that they aren't really worth the time and baggage they carry but to the other one they are worth every step! This series is starting out so good I and I can't wait to continue it!

Lindsey continues the saga of this misfit group of chosen family in small town Colorado seamlessly transitioning from the previous book. The characters have wonderfully rich backgrounds and Lindsey manages to write with great care about Sam and Niko finding their way.

I thought I loved book one in this series but this one was even better. The characters are so lovable and so well written. The relationship built so realistically and it was beautiful! I’m completely in love with this series and can’t believe I haven’t read it before now.
