Blackthorn Child Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 137 ratings

Henry, Lord Downham and Marie-Isabel have everything except a son.

With their second child imminent Marie-Isabel takes a final trip alone into the woods she loves. Caught in a snowstorm she goes into labour and must take refuge in Betsy Sweetapple’s cottage.

Betsy had been dismissed by Henry for immoral behaviour. She has just given birth to a stillborn daughter and now she watches Marie-Isabel die, giving birth to a strong, healthy son. Seeing a chance to avenge imagined wrongs, she swaps babies.

Julian, the blackthorn child, is eventually rescued from a hellish childhood, but can the estate ever be restored to its rightful owner?

Blackthorn Child is an epic family saga of love, loss and the power of one decision; how one moment of weakness has the power to change the course of generations.

Blackthorn Child is more than that of a tragic tale of love, loss and reunification of a father with his son: it is a story of the Dowham family spanning five generations, and without doubt a family saga involving many romances, and lots of heartache, tears and joy. There are numerous twists and turns and a touch of the paranormal, which ends with an enchanting encounter. So, were the last couple destined to meet and find forever happiness? Read the book to find out. It's a lovely read if a little tragic and upsetting in the first instance. Be warned: have tissues at the ready.

This book is a purely captivating read. From the heart wrenching start I was totally absorbed by the story as it describes in beautiful detail the lives of the various characters. It was a particular pleasure to read such a wonderful description of life in days gone by, both the good and the bad. A real insight into the lives and times of a very interesting period. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone, more by this author please!

I was always going to buy this book, but I bought it sooner because of a particularly poor review. When most of the other reviews were full of praise, I was curious about the reasons for one was so negative.

I haven't finished reading it yet, but it has a story that immediately draws you in, and if there are any faults, whether to do with grammar or style, I haven't noticed them because I'm too engrossed in the action, and surely that's what really matters? Having said that, I've definitely noticed some sentences and some paragraphs, where I've found the text to be beautifully written.

This is the type of book you can curl up with, and shut out reality.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A real page-turner

When reading the product description for this book, I was instantly captivated by the storyline. While this is a novel of a genre I, admittedly, would not usually read, I couldn't help myself reading for hours on end to find out what would become of Julian and the whole of his true family.

What's more, the meticulous research that has clearly gone into making the historical details in the novel as accurate as possible is incredibly impressive.

Ms Fountain certainly does have a talent for keeping the reader guessing, and longing to know more.

I had not read anything else by this author so was unsure, however the description of the book seduced me. I did find it a little difficult to get into, maybe the first 2% but after that I found it quite enjoyable
