Break Free: A Kinley Island Novel Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 631 ratings

Caleb:
Nobody’s better at being alone than me. I’ve perfected the art of isolation: I go to work at Luna’s Diner, come home, and I definitely don’t go on dates anymore.

But then Beck walked into my diner looking like the textbook definition of a hot, single dad--tall, bearded, and the kindest eyes this side of the Rockies.
And I let my guard down for the first time in years.

He’s straight, but soon he wants to keep me close. In-bed-together close. I’d forgotten just how good it could feel. But I have no room in my life for a crush, let alone a relationship. My past broke me into pieces, and I’m only now starting to pick them back up.

I’m not going to let myself fall for him.
Even though he’s the first person I’ve been comfortable with in years.
Even though he wants me, too, on lonely nights.
Even though his touch makes me ache.

Beck:
Since moving to Kinley Island, I’ve been living like a shadow. I’m divorced and single for the first time in fifteen years, and my days have been as drab and routine as the rainy weather outside.

And then one late night at my regular diner, everything changed. The mysterious, tattooed man behind the counter opened up to me--flirted with me--and I flirted back. I’ve never been into men, but I can’t keep my eyes off Caleb--he’s beautiful, intense, and broken, and now I feel a desperate urge to fix him.

But I also just got a phone call I never expected: my sixteen-year-old daughter is coming to stay with me for the summer. After living like a bachelor all year, I have no clue how to be a single parent. Caleb offers to help me, and of course I say yes.

But now I’m starting to feel addicted to him.
His body. His lips. His touch.
Is it possible to like a friend too much?

Truckie and the Cook.
5 out of 5 stars
Truckie and the Cook.
What more could you ask for a Bisexual Line Cook and a straight Trucker. Caleb (Hunter's brother from Book 1) is a line cook at at the local diner and every so often Truck driver Beck comes in and has a meal before he sets out on the road. Initially Beck and Caleb are friends and until Caleb's heart gets in the way. really enjoyed reading this book and would highly recommend this series.

This is the third Kinley Island novel I have read. To be truthful, I read Fall Deep out of order but it was so good that I stayed up until 3 am the same night finishing Break Free, another spellbinding novel. All three of the novels start with a relationship between two guys that are completely incompatible and you just know that they can’t have a lasting relationship. Then Ruebins in his skillful writing style brings them together in such a way that it leaves your heart soaring! In Break Free, I found myself craving Beck to give into Caleb and just when things had become darkest, it was Caleb who cemented the relationship, not Beck!

    ***Possible Spoilers***
I was excited to start Break Free. The cover is nice and the blurb intriguing.
Caleb is a beautiful, smart, sexy, well-rounded person. His past has him in a holding pattern of grief. But upon meeting Beck, he starts to see a future that contains more than the gut-wrenching pain he has suffered from for the past couple of years. For quite a while, in his interactions with Beck, I could almost see angels wings and a halo. He is almost too good to be true. The point in the book where he shows a more human side when dealing with Beck was when I fell a little bit in love with him.
I started out loving Beck. He is a sweet, caring, sexy (and doesn't know it), and loyal to a freaking fault. Circumstances and others' actions have destroyed any sense of self-esteem he may have possessed and left him adrift in a sea of loneliness, confusion, and pain. I could feel his emotions, and I hurt for him. It really bothered me that he allows himself, even after the divorce, to make excuses for his ex-wife's behavior and also to continue to put himself down. After a while, I was impatient with him and his sheer stubbornness in what he wants for his life. That gave way to anger because he refuses to see and hold tight to Caleb’s love and support. Instead, he wants his cheating ex-wife back! There is an aha moment where he finally figures out what is really going on in his life and resolves to make it better. That was when I loved him again.
At the end of the book, I care about Beck and Caleb and their future together. They are a lovely couple, the romance is spicy (it is a slow burn though) and believable, and the HEA is satisfying. I hope to see them in the third book of this series.
I look forward to more from this author.

Oh my, all the angst and drama that was almost nonexistent in book #1, made it into this one. It was perfect for the story line though. Both of the MCs went through major upheavals in their lives, that's never easy. It makes for a bumpy ride, especially when it encounters a new relationship. Having to navigate through all of your life plans and feelings, it's hard. Enjoyed watching these two work through everything and make their way to their HEA. Looking forward to reading Landon's story next.

All reviews are voluntary and my honest opinion.

Caleb is still working in the same diner, Luna's, adding steak to the menu, and trying to branch out a bit, while not thinking his life back in New York. There's a new customer that comes in several times a month, a handsome truck driver who does long hauls across the country.

When Beck finds out his wife has been cheating on him for the last two years, he leaves his home and his daughter to move up north and start over on the tiny Island where his grandmother lives.

The last thing Beck expects is for the handsome cook at his favorite restaurant to hit on him. He's not homophobic, so it's fine, he just explains that he's straight. It is flattering, no one's hit on him in a long time, and the guy seems super nice. Maybe he needs a new friend on Kinley Island.

Beck's daughter's been having trouble back home, and his ex-wife decides to send her to stay with him for the summer. When he realizes he hasn't done anything with his new house for the last half a year to make it hospitable his new friend, Caleb, volunteers to help decorate and make dinner.

This is a super cute gay for you story. It was nice to come back to Caleb, who, in many ways, I found more interesting than his brother Hunter, the protagonist of the first story in the series.

Beck can be a little annoying and oblivious about how hung up he is on his wife. She spent their entire marriage condescending to him and picking on him over every little thing that he did, but he's still hung up on getting back together.

The story's slow burn, so expect to wait a while. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants a sweet slow-paced romance.

These Rudbins books are just fantastic. To say I couldn't put this one down is an understatement. Smouldering, catchy, unexpected and fun, Raleigh has found just the right mix to make this one of my all time favorites.

Even though the end was not really my cup of tea (it felt rushed, Beck asking his ex wife back and then in the same night getting together with Caleb and coming out to her), I think it was a nice read. Oh, and I still hate Amy. So much.

I really enjoyed this book. Both main characters were likeable (even if I did get really mad at Beck for a while). No over the top angst, just a sweet story and a couple who wanted to cheer for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly sweet break from the rest of the world
Reviewed in Canada on July 14, 2019
This lovely novel from Raleigh’s Kinley Island series is about Caleb, Hunter’s brother, and Beck, a trucker who’s swirling in life after separating from his wife.
It was seriously enjoyable as Beck navigates his feelings for Caleb. He’d never seen himself as anything but Amy’s Husband and when Caleb forces him to see other aspects of himself, he breaks open and finds himself and renews his relationship with his daughter.
Caleb finally finds someone to help break him from his tragic past and he learns to find happiness and success afterwards.
This novel was sweet with characters you root for. They were natural and you could see them being your friends.
The writing style moved quickly and you wanted to continue to read so you could see what happens.

If you like OFY, and sweet build up of heat, try this book.
