Bridgers 2: The Cost of Survival (Bridgers Series) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 362 ratings

How far would you go to save the human species?

Heart to blood, muscle to bone, tourist flesh above my own. It’s the bridgers’ directive: risk your own life to save tourists bridging to alternate worlds. Bridger Infinity Fowler has no qualms about the directive. Risking death is just what bridgers do. But now the earth is dying. Bridgers have a new directive—save as many humans as possible, even if some must be sacrificed in the process. Sacrificing lives is not what Infinity signed up for.

Desmond Weaver, determined to help save the human species, has volunteered to be Infinity’s partner. He has ingenuity and grit, but is this enough to make it as a bridger?

Their mission: bridge 718 refugees to a new world and establish a colony. If the world is occupied, avoid conflict and learn to coexist.

Once bridging begins, there is no turning back. The new world is indeed occupied, but not by humans, and avoiding conflict isn’t so easy. As violence erupts, Infinity and Desmond realize they may have only one hope of saving the colony—sacrificing refugees they have sworn to protect.

After reading Bridgers 1, I thought, "it can't get any better than this". It was so full of adventure and non-stop action. I was wrong. Bridgers 2 left 1 in the dust.

Bridgers 1 taught us the personalities of the two main protagonists. Bridgers 2 showed more of the relationship between them.

Bridging into a tenuous world is more than just difficult. It's deadly. With a home world disintegrating at an exponential rate, there is little choice of where to Bridge. In the world Infinity and Desmond find themselves, there is little more than survival on their minds. When they bridge back, their objections to bridging refugees to this world are ignored. Infinity's predictions prove to be right on spot. Survival on this world will be the number one thing on each refugee's mind. With only 500 out of 700 (approx) refugees surviving the bridge in, the refugees learn that they themselves will never again see life like they had before. Probably not their children, either.

With the safeguards for which world to bridge to being removed, there is plenty of 'bad things' that can (and probably will) happen. Thus, the need for Bridgers 3. I can't wait for it.

I definitely loved the first book of the series, so I was excited to read this one. And... No, this book is alright, but I was a little bit bored of all that blood and detailed description of battles. It was not specially interesting to read about who bit whos neck and who broke whos head. The idea that Homo Floresiens coud be the main hominid is exciting and realistic, I like it. But the slow motion of the story and repetitve character of the story was not something I miss in this book. But I will read the next installment, just to see where the author’s fantasy can lead me next time. It was an interesting and thrilling book, though.

Great follow up to Bridges 1. Got a tad repeating from the prequel and book 1, but still fast-paced, nonstop action. Nice range of different human choices or desires (some good - some bad) involving what some of humanity was willing to do or endure to survive.

The Cost of Survival is the second book in the Bridgers series. This could be read as a standalone but I do not recommend that. You really need to read the first book to fully understand the story. There is violence. The Earth is about to be destroyed and moving at least some of the people to new alternate "Earths" seems to be the only option. But that option also comes at a cost. What price would you be willing to pay and to what lengths would you go to survive? That is the question that each person bridging must answer.

Am Hooked and cannot put the book (series) down. It's a page Turner book gripper. And I replay scenes in my mind like I would with a movie and can't wait to continue watching it. When I read a book it's just not reading it's visual to. So when am reading and get visual it's watching a movie play in my head with the finest details. I am started the next book in line and can't wait to continue the movie scene in my mind. Thank you Stan

What once was an optional excursion of adventure has now become a necessary means of survival. Most people won’t get the chance but for those that do there is an enormous degree of anxiety about what lies ahead. They will venture into the unknown facing unfamiliar life forms and circumstances. Can they adapt in order to survive and preserve the human race? What do we gain and what might we lose in the process?

The premise of this series is what keeps me interested. There is so much potential to observe what our human natures are capable of and what we might not have thought we were capable of when push comes to shove. Is our goal to attempt to dominate or to learn from and look out for one another?

Typically, this genre is not my cup of tea. I much prefer a good mystery mixed with a bit of romance. However, there is mystery in venturing into unknown territory and a hint of romance or how else will a population avoid extinction? But, and this is a big BUT, this series (so far) contains a lot of grisly violence. If you can get past all the gore (which seemed to increase in the 2nd of the series) than there are thought provoking ideas to consider that give the story substance. I liked the first book and gave it a four star but since I didn’t find all the violence to be entertaining (although, perhaps necessary to the story) I could only give this book 3.5 stars and yet I am hopeful that the next in the series might be more to my liking.

3.0 out of 5 stars How would you manage the end of the world?

That's a big question that the Bridgers #2 book takes. Earth's days are counted, and sending colonies into alternate worlds might be the only way to preserve life, liberty and the american way. And that means taking insane risks, and 50% losses along the way? Acceptable.

The book is short and quick, like the previous one, and keeps the original formula, just with different stakes than protecting 3 "tourists". The whole works, somewhat, even if it often frustrates you. I find myself wishing that it did include the local's perspective, even if I can see it would completely change the tone and story. Worth seeing to the end, if not absolutely good (I hesitated between 3 and 4 stars a lot).

So goes the fourth principle of the Bridgers creed.

Earth is experiencing its death throes, and The SafeTrek sites are poised to begin “bridging” colonists/refugees in lots of 240 (arriving on a schedule of one group per hour) to a place and time in Earth’s alternate history where they might survive and continue the human race.

Two ‘Bridgers”, Infinity (who has survived for four years in this role, during which time almost every other “Bridger” she knew died doing their jobs) and Desmond (a survivor - civilian tourist - of Infinity’s last mission, who has committed his life to serving as the newest Bridger) will have 36 hours to provide leadership and protection to those refugees, and then they are completely on their own.

Bridgers arrive at their destination, naked and hairless, unable to bring any weapons or survival equipment with them. They have their hands and feet and their brains. And they will have to face enemies who are barely humanoid, are much larger than humans, far stronger than humans, and can hunt in packs.

This is another well-constructed novel in the four-book Bridgers series. It is complex, but not overwhelmingly so. Like the first book, - Bridgers: The Lure of Infinity - it is character-driven. The characters feel authentic, and whether or not the reader feels comfortable relating to them, they are diverse and interesting.

If you get this far into the Bridgers series, be glad there are two more novels and one prequel still available. And if you haven’t heard of, or picked up, books in Stan C. Smith’s Diffusion series, there is still a lot more high-quality writing waiting for you to experience.

    5.0 out of 5 stars A fast-paced sci-fi sequel
Reviewed in Canada on June 15, 2018

The author knocks it out of the park again with the sequel to his excellent Bridgers. This time the stakes have been raised. No longer is Infinity guiding rich tourists on adventures. With the world coming to an end, now Infinity is guiding over 700 handpicked colonists to worlds that are familiar, but also very different to the one they are leaving. Naked and oblivious to what awaits them, can Infinity keep the colonists alive long enough to give them a fighting chance at a future?

Infinity is back, this time with Desmond along for the ride as her Bridger partner. She's still as badass as before, but she not only battles indigenous lifeforms on the new world, but also divergent opinions of her fellow colonists, who unlike the Bridgers, have a one-way ticket. She must balance how far they must go to survive with how much of their humanity they are prepared to leave behind.

The author writes pacy, exciting and thoughtful books, and Bridgers 2 is no different. If you enjoyed the first in the series, you absolutely have to read this one.
