Beyond the Eyes of Mars: Starship's Mage Book 12 Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 3,981 ratings

Beyond the borders of the Protectorate
Beyond the eyes of the Royal Martian Navy
Beyond the reach of the Mage-Queen
Innocents cry out for help—and Mars will answer!

When the Royal Martian Navy moved against reports of piracy in the Fringe Systems, the last thing Mage-Commander Roslyn Chambers expected was to find was a malignant remnant of the defeated Republic of Faith and Reason.

Now the Royal Martian Navy knows their enemy and their Mage-Queen has charged them to bring the First Legion, conquerors of the hidden colonies beyond the Fringe, to justice. The Legion knows the RMN’s tricks, though, and has cleverly concealed their tracks.

As Chambers and the spy Kelly Lamonte sweep distant stars for the trail of their enemies, the fleets of Mars gather behind them—but the fate of millions may lie in the hands of a woman none of them have ever met.

A woman the Republic already killed.

If you haven't read any of the starship mage books, I highly recommend reading the first one, as it introduces the characters and concepts of this awesome hybrid universe. This book is not a jumping on point, but if you read it completely out of context of the rest of the series, you would still be in for an amazing journey with spaceships and magic. Much harder Sci fi than you would expect from a series with magic, and an extremely well thought out magic system, if that is a nitpick of yours.

Stewart manages to balance the three plot lines he sets up in this novel and weave them together to a satisfying conclusion. The characters get a decent amount of development, and I'm content with the ending.

The only nitpick I might have with the book is that it doesn't move the series metaplot as much as I would like, but that was likely a result of the author choosing to make an independently compelling story.

All in all, if you are a fan of this series, read this book all ready.

If you are a fan of Sci fi or fantasy, and have been on the fence about this series, Start with The Starship Mage.

If you are a fan of both Sci fi and fantasy, then move Starship Mage to the front of your reading list. You will not regret a single moment you spend in their universe.

Thoroughly enjoyed this series. A fan of David Weber. find the mage series innovative. Militarily accurate and outstanding in story execution. Good character development, self doubt and firm morale leadership shown throughout. truly cared for ALCON. True empathy for main characters a surprise.
The multiple social marriages presented as throw away lines and just assumed as germaine, not a center or plot, was a pleasant surprise. Gives one hope in these troubling times. I look forward to additional Glymn Stewart stories

And with a lot of promise for more!

We see a lot more of Kelly in this book. And of course, Roslyn. I really enjoy all the character growth in this book. Glynn never lets us down there, but in particular, I felt Kelly's story line was refreshing.

I have to say, I did not enjoy the abrupt ending, since we have to WAIT for the next book...lol! I want more!

I received an advance reader's copy of this book in exchange for probably giving a free and unbiased review...they don't even REQUIRE it from me. But I genuinely love Glynn's writing and every single one of his series. Thanks Glynn! Least I can do is tell everyone what I think.

I only have one book left out to read. One! I’ve devoured these until there was but one last entry waiting for me until I had to be forced to be patient. I don’t know how the people reading this series didn’t go crazy after the endings of some of these books and having to wait. I don’t even know how the author makes such vivid books. A true artist and wordsmith. What a series. I can’t wait to be among the queue of those waiting in anticipation of what’s to come. Epic series.

Warning: Don't finish this book just before a web meeting because you will have puffy eyes.

I read ~250 Kindle Free books per year and am reading along with 3-4 dozen different active series. To be honest, with that sort of volume it takes me a few chapters with some series to remember what's going on.

That is NEVER the case with this series. It is *SO* memorable, I always pick up right away from the last book even though it's been months (sadly). Furthermore, this is one of the few series I make a real point of tracking when the next book is out because I love reading them so much.

There are some series where it seems like the author is phoning it in after the first half-dozen or so books. That's simply not the case here. Great book, great characters you come to care about (hence, the weeping), and a really cool universe.

    Highly recommend.

This was a quick read and advances the plotline of the Mars section of the spaceship mages. I'm just surprised that it is almost 10 books in and the storyline that started around book 4 with the aliens and where the magic script came from has not been advanced. I think those would be a much more logical way to advance the series.

These books are formulaic, but I’m here for it. The characters, the plots, the military strategies .. they form a continuing story where the might of Mars is tested time and again.

Different situations require differing strategies, and Glynn Stewart is a strategic mastermind. I would not want to go up against him in a game of chess, much less a space battle.

He writes the story so well, it just pulls you in. You find yourself cheering or shedding a tear for people you’ve never met. When they renamed the new Mars Republic outpost Devereaux Station, my throat caught. It was touching in an unexpected way.

This book was incredibly good. What an awesome character Sharon Devereaux is, old favourites are there too of course but the introduction of new characters really moves the series forward to the next level. Moving further and further out into the unknown, I'm looking forward to the next book.
