Built for Speed: Winter Sports, Book 1 Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 103 ratings

“Challenge me, James!”

James no longer believed in miracles. Particularly not on the ice. Not after a family tragedy in the midst of an ice storm. Then an elegant, nameless vision skated past him and challenged him to a race. They raced two times splitting the victories, and then four thousand miles of land and ocean put a gaping distance between them.

The vision was a Dutchman named Lucas, and at age 24 he was already retired from the national sport of speed skating. He held a secret close to his chest to justify the retirement. It was a secret that faced the possibility of unraveling when he got to know James.

James played a starring role on his college hockey team, but he found skating for speed addictive after meeting Lucas. Pursuing both sports filled his life with excitement until disaster struck, and James threatened to turn his back on the ice and Lucas forever.

When one of them finds the strength to claim victory over internal foes, will it be enough for two?

Built for Speed is a 50,000-word gay romance novel with a happily-ever-after ending and second chance themes. It is the first book in the series Winter Sports, but it can be read either as a standalone story or an introduction to the series.

Midwestern college hockey player, James, meets a Dutch ex-speed skater, Lucas as both are skating for pleasure in Chicago while vacationing over the Christmas holiday. Both are cautious as neither thinks a long distance relationship will work based on the short interactions. James and Lucas have different issues from their past that have brought them to where they are today.
As the story progresses, new issues and crises arise but it is the similarities of how they have addressed their personal problems in the past that allow them to help each other. And I case you must know there is a HEA ending.

Another great, fast paced read from Declan Rhodes. His secondary characters are simply well rounded and interesting. Lucas's friend Anna and James's teammate Jordi are wonderful characters that you want to learn more about. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Declan has written another book that delves into the building of a relationship and trust between two men who have been hurt in the past. One is afraid to follow his heart and the other is afraid to fail. As they grow as men they develop a closeness that is heartwarming. I love how they collect friends and add to their family. I'm hoping there will be a story in this series in which Jordi is the main star!

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review...but then I bought a copy in appreciation of a story well told!

The whole story felt awkward. The characters seemed awkward around each other. The verbiage was weird. Whenever Lucas spoke, it seemed so formal and constrained. Was that in order to demonstrate Lucus's Dutch heritage? The sex (what little there was) was boring.

This book was absolutely amazing. This book was a page turner that I just couldn't stop reading until the end. This book was beautifully written. I had absolutely loved reading this book. This book is a m/m Romance. I would highly recommend this book. I had voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book. I also purchased a copy of this book.

Lucas and James meet on the ice on vacation. Friendly race challenged, and a connection between them keeps them in contact. Long distance relationships are tough but they try. Both let petty pride and fear keep them from doing what they love on the ice. Also causes a rift between them that breaks them off. Not once but twice. I feel they both gave up to easy and forgave to easy with out a fight, but pride and anger are never rational. So enters the "long suffering friend who endures all the ups and downs", who helps them get back to each other. Lucas and James both have their HEA. Hoping to see Jordi have his story next.

I’ve read books about Hockey before so I was a little familiar with it but I didn’t know anything about speed skating besides what I saw at the Olympic’s. It was interesting to say the least. I loved both of the characters, how they met and then spent so much time apart but in the end love conquered all. Beautiful story, can’t wait for book 2 now.

I’ve read a few books by this author, and generally like his writing. But, I had to “give up” on this one around 49%. The dramatic reason Lucas gave up competing was ridiculous, IMHO. This was compounded by the fact that he cut off his relationship with James because he brought it up, and forbid his BFF Anna to discuss it as well. This just made him an unbelievable, or highly unlikeable, character to me. I just wanted to send him to therapy.

This was a great book. I really liked the international flare of the story. Without writing a spoiler let me say that after getting hurt while skating James (hockey player) finally understood why Lucas (former Dutch international speed skater) quit racing.

Declan Rhodes never disappoints with his sports themed stories

What a rollercoaster of an emotional ride love blossoming and then shattering followed by it blossoming again and shattering again before James and Lucas conquered fear and pride and then bring their happy ever after ending.

    Built for Speed

James a budding Ice Hockey player and Lucas a retired Speed Skater both have reasons why they should and shouldn't be on the ice. When they first meet the instant attraction is boom! The only problem is the distance they live away from each other. They keep in contact over the internet falling hard and fast.
James tells Lucas why he needs to be on the ice and he hopes Lucas will tell him why he's staying off the ice. When he doesn't James goes snooping on the internet, he knows he shouldn't he's already lost a partner due to this before. Lucas doesn't know why he can't leave it alone he's not going back to speed skating and cuts him off.
For six months they avoid each other and things change in their lives. James has started more speed skating and Lucas has a new job bringing him closer to James but they miss each other terribly. It only takes for one of them to reach out to rekindle their love.
After James pushes himself too hard a terrible accident happens making him decide to quit the ice. Lucas tries to convince him but this leads to them breaking up for a second time.
With them both back to being to miserable, Lucas knows what he needs to do. Will he be able to convince James to get back on the ice?
Have to mention Jordi, I'm hoping he gets his own book!
I enjoyed this book but with the build up over the internet I was hoping for more heat when they finally got together.
