Built by Magic (Falling for Fables) Kindle Edition
When expert archer Frida decides to join the family Assassin’s Guild, she’s given an induction task. She’s to track down an orc named Rune and steal his dragon. And if she brings the guild his head, even better.
But when she finds Rune, there’s no dragon. Only a grumpy orc, hidden in the forest and building homes for the folk of the nearby villages. Frida realizes he must be hiding the dragon somewhere else.
She conjures up a plan. She’ll worm her way into his life, pretend to be a friendly new arrival to his island, and get him to trust her enough to spill his secrets. Within a few weeks, she’ll have that dragon.
But as she and Rune grow closer, unexpected desires storm between them. Frida starts to question her future—and her past. And as the days turn to weeks, she must decide if she can complete her quest and fully give her heart to the guild.
Because it might just belong to someone else.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2025Last night I finished Built by Magic by Jenna Wolfhart. It’s book four in her Falling for Fables series.
I love Built by Magic just like I’ve loved all the books in this series.
This book is the story of Frida and Rune. Frida decides to join her family in the Assassin’s Guild she has to do an induction task. That task is to steal a dragon from an orc named Rune.
When she gets there, there’s no dragon to be seen. She decides to befriend Rune and see if she can uncover his dragon once they become close.
But as the weeks go on Frida starts to question her life and what she actually wants. And her and Rune become close.
I fell in love with Rune, the grumpy orc, and Frida is the sunshine he needs. This book is exactly why I LOVE the grumpy/sunshine trope.
You do not need to read the other books in the series before this one but there are cameos of characters from the other books (which I also loved!) I do recommend the whole series but there’s no reason you can’t start with this book. It’s very easy to fall in love with the world Jenna creates in this series, no matter what book you start with.
P.S. If you love a darker romantasy vs a cozy one like this Jenna wrote The Mist King series, that’s how I found her, and it’s so so good! I definitely recommend it if you prefer darker!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2025A nice cozy story with all the feels! I loved the story and enjoyed the little cat and mouse games between the two with Frida trying to hide certain things.
It was a fun and lighthearted story with two lonely souls finding each other and more in the end.
Frida was a determined character. I liked how stubborn and loyal she was.
Rune was quiet and protective. I loved his protective nature with everyone! He had such a good heart.
The two of them were fun! The banter, the tension, the slow burn… I loved it all!!
And now for the best part… the tropes; enemies to lovers, grumpy/sunshine, banter, wound tending, cozy, dragons, magic, one home, forced proximity, found family, magic, hidden agendas, yummy cheese, finding one’s place, and so much more!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2025These books are a change of pace for me and always a fun reading experience. They are sweet and cozy, with all the romantasy vibes I love.
Rune and Frida are probably my favorite couple thus far. This one was a super slow burn and low stakes and spice, which isn’t normally what I go for, but I enjoy the way Jenna makes me fall in love with the characters from the beginning and how their story unfolds. They have a shared past and an understanding of their future. Ruin has been where Frida is now and is there for her. Even though he suspects her intentions, he allows her to be who she is and come to her own conclusions as to what she wants. Frida sees Rune isn’t what she expected either and finds herself falling for his charm and reclusiveness. I mean he has romance books, a cute cat companion, and cooks for her…swoon! I loved how Rune takes care of his community and neighbors without wanting anything in return. And of course a dragon sidekick (which I will always see as Toothless lol). I found myself smiling and laughing with their banter and it does pay off. Though there was only one smexy scene, it was perfect for them. So if you’re looking for a sweet and cozy book and a palate cleanser, then this is right up your alley!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2025A cute and cozy romantasy. Built by Magic is the first book in the Falling for Fables series that I have read. It worked as a standalone, though I can tell that that there is was some world building that was assumed that I was missing the details of. This book is low-key and unstressful. If you're looking for a palate-cleanser or prefer cozy fantasy without the epic world building then I would recommend this book.
I'm not always a fan of cozy fantasy because it often feels a little to easy and simple, and this book was no exception. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the read and found the romance cute and satisfying.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2025I have loved every single one of these books and they do indeed make you wan to curl up with a blanket with your favorite beverage and soak every beautiful word. I giggled and laughed and wanted to comfort these characters. And we do see our favorite elven brewer again! I hope there is more of cozy romance novels to come!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2025I’m going to be honest here. The FMC was a stupid little girl. Honestly, the book could have ended when she landed on the island, saw the MMC and had a pretty obvious epiphany.
Also, the timeline was supposedly like 3 decades after the OG characters… which, ok then? Annnnd all the things we know about dragons are different now because “we learned more magic” uh huh. Lazy writing!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2025This is the fourth book in Falling for Fables collection, a set of interconnected standalones.
Tropes and themes include:
✨Cozy vibes
✨Forced proximity
✨Dragons
✨Grumpy/sunshine
✨Enemies to lovers
Rating: 4/5 Stars 2/5 Flames
Nickname: Sunshine
The Lovely: I came to adore the main couple in this story. They reminded me a lot of the couple in book one (and not just because there was an orc in that book too), but with a bit less spice. I appreciate how patient the MMC was with the FMC as she was struggling with how she wanted her life to look in the future.
The Mundane: While I liked the cozy, low stakes vibes, compared to the prior books in this series, it was really no stakes and low spice. In most, if not all, of the prior books there was something dramatic towards the end that amped up the tension. I kept waiting for that with this book but nothing really materialized.
Recommendation: This is, at it’s core, a pretty short (230 pages) cozy monster romance. I didn’t feel as engaged by it as I did books one and two but I will likely stick with this series as I like this concept and the variety it provides from my dark romantasies. If you like cozy, no stakes monster romance centered around the grumpy/sunshine trope and a dragon, I think you would like this book.
