Catching a Water Nymph (Cryptid Enforcement Bureau Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 290 ratings

Blurb:
I don’t like that you are staring at me—it’s suspicious. Ugh, I suppose you want to hear my story? I’m Seri North. I was your average, highly introverted, slightly nerdy, workaholic male Water Nymph. Until I made the horrible decision to go on a date with a rich, psychotic Shadow Dweller, who just so happened to be in charge of a large criminal enterprise.

That date ended in a whole ton of paranoia, trauma, and pregnancy, after almost six years of captivity. For the sake of my dwindling sanity, you won’t see most of that captivity. You get to see the fun—and not so fun—aftermath.

So, what does one do while heavily pregnant in captivity? Escape, obviously. Logically, I knew HE would come after me. If not just due to his obsession, then definitely to get his hands on my child. What I did not expect was to be accused of murder, and for the Shadow Dweller that showed up at my door to be an agent with the Cryptid Enforcement Bureau, instead of my ex-captor.

The agent, Severo Ambrose…was not what I expected. Not that I expected him at all. But he was vastly different from what I had come to understand about Shadow Dwellers.

Either way, that is about where this story starts. With poor innocent me being chased by the universal government for a crime I didn’t commit. A story of pain, trauma, healing…and love. The love, honestly, surprised even me. But Severo…as I said, was not what I expected.

I loved this book. Especially because even though it is the first in a series, the main characters' story was completely wrapped up. The author addressed the crime process and the whole relationship. The world was well established without a painful information dump.

The story itself was pretty good and I really enjoyed reading it but if you’re the sort of person that gets jarred out of the story by awkward grammatical errors I wouldn’t recommend it to you. The writing was pretty good but the errors were the kind you would find in a well written high school essay. Like you know the writer understands grammar but they either second guessed themselves or tried to hard

What an emotional ride, this book pulled every emotional string possible. It made me cry, get mad, wish for a very painful vengeance, bite my nails in suspense, and scream. But there were sweet and tender moments that gave my poor heart a break, making it go all gooey. And of course can't forget the snarky humor which always makes me crack up.
Seri did not have a very happy life being emotional and physical abuse (please heed the trigger warnings) but found strength to survive. And once they escaped they did everything they could to ensure they would not be captured again. Severo was exactly what Seri needed to fight his demons (figuratively and literally), so supportive, patient, and loving. It does have a HEA but it sure was not an easy road there.
The secondary characters were also fully developed, adding to the story, not just fillers. Also the world building was excellent, detailed but not overdone with boring details. Now I need a couple more stories based on those secondary characters!!

    Where to start?

The plot was so good!!!!!! I loved how Seri was such a fighter! Anytime something bad happened to him he’d never give up and intelligently plot his escape/revenge.

There is talk of past SA but nothing on page. I really appreciated the work it took for Seri to claim his daughter as HIS and not the biological butt head’s.

I LOVED Severo’s interactions with Seri from start to finish. Severo knew something was off and was suspicious of the events surrounding Seri’s life from the beginning.

It didn’t take long for him to go from trying to catch Seri to trying to protect Seri. I loved that it was a true slow burn and that feelings developed slowly but steadily between them.

Heat level easily a 3/5. It was really hot finding out the big strapping Severo liked to where thongs and jock straps and even hotter that he liked to be told what to do by Seri and that he’d do almost anything to be called a,” good boy” ::fans self:: so hot!.

That said there wasn’t a ton on smexy times in this book but you didn’t need it. There was enough to add to the story but not so much that it took over. It really enhanced the story and added another layer.

    SPOILER ALERT!

I really enjoyed the plot twists. I WILL be honest. When Seri gets captured again (which he even says in the story he knows it’s when not if), I had to put the book down for a bit bc the author does a REALLY good job of showing how traumatized Seri is from his 6 years of captivity.

I’m glad to say that when I came back the “recapture “ was fairly short lived and Seri kicks some major ass.

Now for one of my favorite parts. This author did something I wish more authors would do. I got to see what life was like AFTER the “main” drama calms down. I got to see Severo and Seri and baby Skya settle down and become a family :: heart melting emoji::

I always feel a little robbed when I don’t get to see the fruition of the characters hard work overcoming the hardships. I WANT to see the happy times that the characters have so richly earned and you get that with this story.

Can’t wait for the second book. I’m hoping it’ll be a continuation of this couple but even if it’s not I’m sure it’ll be good.

I was a little worried about finishing this book as it is over 500 pages. I love reading, but most authors can’t keep a 500 page book interesting enough. I LITERALLY could not stop reading this book. Shelby is wonderful author, I mean the world building alone was off the charts. Definitely worth the read!!

The story had promise and I enjoyed most of it. The cover, I am afraid, almost had me looking else where. The ending was a dead end. While he got what he deserved, the author would have had better luck, in another direction. While I did like the characters, and the story line was a good one, certain parts need work. This is the 3rd book by this author and I find that it is a take or leave situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thriving not just surviving.
Reviewed in Australia on March 2, 2024
Wow, this book will take you through a complete range of emotions.
Seri is a survivor & Severo is perfect as the man who gives him the care, support & love needed to live his life thriving in all it has become. Skya is adorable & feisty, so cute.
There is trauma, so heed the trigger warnings, but seeing the healing occurring even through the saddest, hardest fear facing moments is beautiful.
I don't want to spoil anything so all I'll say is the final part with Preston was unexpected and a bit shocking, but so, so perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars love this author
Reviewed in Canada on March 2, 2024
Ok, I’m gonna be completely honest, reading the blurb it took me a few days to start this one. I figured with Seri’s past this was going to be darker then I was in the mood for. But then I remembered how much I loved The Adventures of Harlow and Foxx and decided to take the plunge. This was so good! I loved how we got several different POVs, even from side characters, it really brought the story together.
And the MC’s! Loved them! Who knew Severo was such a dork and that kink! Yes, please!
Seri was so strong and learning bits here and there of what all he went thru but came out stronger made me love him even more. But for me I feel like Severo and Skya’s connection stole the show. It was adorable! And all the animal onesie’s, cuteness overload!
I also liked this wasn’t an insta-love story, how could it be with everything Seri had to worry about, even noticing how hot Severo was wasn’t even on his radar. Usually this would annoy me being so far into a book before something even remotely resembling attraction b/w the MC’s took this long but it just fit.
Last thing was that ending! Damn…..

5.0 out of 5 stars Story from multiple POV
Reviewed in Canada on March 9, 2024
For me the characters are the best parts of this story by Shelby Rhodes. The story is told from multiple points of view which in the wrong hands could have been a confusing mess but Ms Rhodes does an amazing job of weaving all of these elements together and has produced a fantastic tale of survival. I was actually amazed by how quickly this fairly long story seemed to go but that may have been because once I stared it I had a hard time putting it down. (Four AM!) I really liked how Seri was not written just as a victim even though terrible things had happened to him. Ms Rhodes uses a light touch and brings in some of her trademark humor but this story is definitely darker than most of her writing so read the warnings if you have triggers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great new series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 4, 2024
Great new series. Seri is a water nymph who was kidnapped 6 years ago, we start with him finally escaping his captor. Severo is a Cryptid Enforcement Bureau operative who is sent to capture Seri for murder. Both characters are very likeable. The story is gripping. This is a darker story than Shelby's other novels. Be aware of potential triggers. HEA. Thoroughly enjoyed, can't wait for the next book.
