Rejection may try to tear them apart, but will ultimately bring them together.

Schoolteacher Charlie Matthews returns to his hometown seeking the life he's been missing since coming out. He wants simple things——friendship and a sense of belonging——and it looks like his dreams are coming true when an accident brings Josh into his life.

When paramedic Josh Campbell attends an emergency and meets Charlie, sparks fly. He's found the one person who makes him feel whole and who he wants to build a future with. But the thought of being rejected by his brother, the man who sacrificed everything for him, is overwhelming.

For Charlie to have his happy ever after, he needs Josh to take a chance, but is their love strong enough motivation for Josh? And if Josh's worst fears come true, can their relationship survive the fallout?

It's not until Charlie confronts his own past that he fully understands what Josh has to lose. But Josh is Charlie's hero, and Josh will do anything to prove to Charlie that his dreams can come true.

Charlie’s Hero is low angst m/m romance set in a small town, featuring first responders and found families.

Review

"This is one book I loved since the first sentence. The story is well written and the main characters Charlie and Josh are made for each other. [...] This is a book that will show you that there is more than meets the eye when it comes to the ones closer to you." ~ Bike Book Reviews

"Charlie's Hero is a wonderful read. Charlie blew my mind. He's so strong, brave, and smart. [...] This will be a great series I can tell and I look forward to more from this author." ~

"Charlie's Hero is an amazing story about love, acceptance, and courage. While the relationship that Charlie and Josh are having is sweet and a pleasure to watch, the way their background impacts it, pushing them to deal with other's opinions and attitudes is just as interesting." ~

"I got hooked into Charlie's Hero very quickly, and read it in two sittings, staying up later than I should because I needed to find out what happened. After finishing it, I was very pleased to find out that it is the first of a series, and that the next book Andrew's Promise is already out! [...] I'd highly recommend Charlie's Hero to readers who enjoy a sweet romance, an interesting supporting cast of characters,..." ~

This is a sweet story, with a bit - quite unnecessary - angst.
My objection: some of the difficult parts are bypassed. The reader will not get to know what could have been said. Pity. It could have been interesting.

Charlie is back home, in his hometown. He is a teacher, loving his job and and getting on quite well. Despite having been "expelled from the family" by his parents, he thrives with his life. He has his childhood friend Greg at his side. The only thing missing is a man to love. Charlie is not into casual hook-ups, he longs for a long-term relationship.

Josh who catches Charlie's eye, is a paramedic. His older brother Andrew is his only family, after they lost their father to aneurysm. Something that Andrew has said all those years ago, made Josh believe that coming out to his brother would be painful, that it could even rip them apart. Believing that, as the relationship deepens, Josh is a bit unsure what to do, when and how to tell his brother. Of course, Josh should have had more trust in his brother and his love for Josh.

Why is Josh Charlie's hero? Among other things because he spoke up to Charlie's parents on his behalf. Not that it helped much. It sounds unbelievable that parents could treat their only child, the one they were supposed to love, this way, but as it has been said before - there is still too much hatred around. So it could have happened.

But the story is simple, the friends - on both sides - are nice and come together well. Even the classical consert experience is believable. There is a cliffhanger in this story, but not directly associated with these two main characters. A cliffhanger that I have sort of expected from about halfway through the story.

If you read the blurb, you'll get the gist of the story--but not the depth of the characters nor the complexity of their situations. That's because author Starr has taken the time to get you acquainted with Charlie and Josh, and the other characters who spill into their paths along their way to love triumphing over lust and fear.

I loved the tempo and the depth here, and even though Josh's fear of what his brother Andrew might do if he comes out to him is a bit overdone--and Andrew's reaction is a dead giveaway along the way--you'll find this to be a lovely read that will prepare you for the sequel, in which Andrew comes back as an MC.

This was a really good, uplifting story. There is tension around coming out and how family will react, but the love of the two main characters is the biggest emotion in the story. There are steamy moments, but also tender ones, and I loved the characters and friendships, and found family that they surrounded themselves with, and I really believe in their HEA!

The story was pretty good even though the blurb made it seem a lot more dramatic than it actually was. Josh and his brother are supposed to be very close, but I just wasn't seeing that at all and his reluctance to tell him seemed blown out of proportion. That being said Josh and Charlie were very cute together and the supporting characters were great and I can't wait to see more from them.

A sweet love story with likeable MCs. The start was slow for me as I typically find insta-love stories a little twee, but then the book takes off and it's a delightful read.

This is a beautiful MM Love story of Charlie, a school teacher, and Josh, a paramedic. The two are immediately attracted to each other with their jobs minimizes the time they spend with each other, but they make it work. Charlie is totally out, but Josh is out other than to his brother, Andrew, who has raised him since he was his mid teens. Josh was afraid what his brother might think or do because of an incident Andrew had with his best friend Tanner years ago about Tanner being gay. Charlie is patient with him because he wants so much more with Josh. As time goes on, Andrew is in a car accident, and the two end up showing their feelings right in front of Andrew. The story only gets better and you will definitely love the ending... A Great Read.

This was a sweet m/m romance and I really enjoyed it. When Charlie first sees Josh he felt something and when they met a few weeks later the feeling was mutual.
I really felt for Charlie at times and even though I know this happens in real life but being a mother myself I cannot begin to understand how parents can just disown their own child like that.
Josh had his own worries about his brother accepting him after a misunderstanding! His brother put his own life on hold while caring for Josh after their father's sudden death when Josh was 15. This has a surprising ending which we will see in the 2nd book and I can't wait to read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars ... debut novel Charlie's Hero is a heartwarming story of love, friendship
Reviewed in Australia on June 19, 2015
Nic Starr's debut novel Charlie's Hero is a heartwarming story of love, friendship, loyalty and family, at its best and worst. Charlie and Josh each face their own battles dealing with being gay in their home town. Charlie has returned to teach in the town where he grew up, knowing his parents will probably never accept their gay son in their lives. Josh has to deal with whether or not his only surviving relative, his burly mechanic brother Andrew, will accept him for who he is. After Andrew's total rejection of his best friend, Tanner, years before when he came out as gay, Josh feels justified in fearing the loss of his brother. Charlie and Josh find they are stronger together than they were apart, and finding their HEA may be possible with, or without, family support. Charlie's Hero is a great first novel and can be read as a stand alone but Nic promises more in this series. I can't wait to read them!

This was my firsy read by Nic Starr but it won’t be the last.
I really enjoyed the love between Charlie and Josh, it was a beautiful and sweet MM love story.
Charlie is a school teacher and Josh is a paramedic, the attraction between Charlie and Josh it instant, kind of a lust at first sight, which becomes love. There are only a few minor obstacles for Charlie and Josh to overcome such as Josh coming out to his brother.
Charlie’s Hero is a sweet, beautiful and enjoyable read. The story is just about the development of a relationship between Charlie and Josh.
