Chasing Angels: A Woman's Journey to the Top of Mont Blanc Kindle Edition
Her grandfather was guillotined and her father imprisoned but later released causing the family to live on their memories in an impoverished château. In 1836, she was the first woman to reach the summit of Mont Blanc – in a bonnet and petticoats!
This novella is a fictional account of her life in which her love of the outdoors and her determination to excel in her climbing endeavours, which made her an object of derision and pity, is examined in a witty and sympathetic portrayal. We see her father, her mother and her younger brother. We see her at school and the circumstances in which she 'rescued' her companion, Jeannette, from destitution. We meet the Protestant ladies of Genevan society and the men of Chamonix who accompany her on her expedition.
Starting close to her death, Henriette looks back on her life and her great achievement. Full of humour and love, Chasing Angels tell the story of a truly remarkable woman.
Sally Zigmond began writing fiction with great enthusiasm and some success when she turned forty, and her two sons no longer needed her 24/7. As the years went on, she published a novella, Chasing Angels, and a novel, Hope Against Hope which was long-listed for the RNA Romantic Novel of the Year 2012. She now writes mainly historical fiction. After many years in North Yorkshire, she now lives just over the border in Middlesbrough and is still writing, reviewing and editing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story about an amazing woman
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCould need a thorough proofreading but apart from that, this is a wonderful story about an amazing woman. Or rather two women because I really like Jeannette who is so doting and so angry. My favorite character in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing story brought beautifully to life
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe charm of this kind of biographical fiction is that it introduces you to people you would otherwise never have heard of. Who knew that an obscure French aristocrat from a village in the Jura had climbed Mont Blanc not long after the French revolution? Her relationship with her father, rescued from prison 'by an angel' is the keystone to her ambitions and gives us the title of the book. The life and times of Henriette are revealed not just in her voice but also in the voices of those around her at home in Lompnes, in Geneva and in Chamonix. The characaterisation - from the dreadful mother to the village girl who has preceded her up the mountain - is brilliant. I also liked the eliptical nature of the story telling which allows us to piece her life together for ourselves. It also left me wanting more, but in a good way, and with a great understanding of this woman's nature and her crowning achievement.
