Christmas Homecoming (The Christmas Angel Book 4) Kindle Edition
It is Christmas before they see each other again, but that Christmas comes six years and a world war later. Aged, beaten, and shaken by combat, they’re not the boys they were back then, but their feelings for each other are stronger than ever.
Neither know the words to say everything they’ve carried since that peacetime summer kiss, though. Even as they stand in the same room, there’s a thousand miles between them.
But maybe that’s some distance the little angel in Roger’s rucksack can cross.
This 24,000 word novella is part of the multi-author Christmas Angel series, and can be read as a standalone.

About the author

L.A. Witt is a romance and suspense author who has at last given up the exciting nomadic lifestyle of the military spouse (read: her husband finally retired). She now resides in Pittsburgh, where the potholes are determined to eat her car and her cats are endlessly taunted by a disrespectful squirrel named Moose. In her spare time, she can be found painting in her art room or destroying her voice at a Pittsburgh Penguins game.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2018One last splash through the local swimming hole for the summer leads to realizations for Roger Miller and Jack O’Brien but is it too late since Jack is leaving the next day for college? With promises of seeing each other at Christmas they wonder where they'll end up but the promised holiday reunion comes six years late after the long years of war have shaped their lives. Will Roger and Jack find happiness with each other finally or has their time passed them by?
Yet another amazing story in the multi-author Christmas novella series, The Christmas Angel. LA Witt's Christmas Homecoming is full of everything that makes holiday romances great: promises of more, separation by unseen circumstance, and inevitable reunions. I don't think I'm giving anything away by saying this is a HEA because as it so often is with holiday tales, the meat-and-potatoes of the story isn't in the ending but the journey the main characters take to get there.
For those who don't usually go for historicals all I can say is please go outside your norm and give this series a try. So far I've only read three of the seven tales but they have all been respectful for the past all while telling a great little gem of love story. With Roger and Jack's part of the Angel's journey we get to see them warring within themselves between what their hearts desire and what is expected of them: getting married and settling down(they don't call the years following WW2 the Baby Boom for nothing😉😉). As a forty-five year old woman in 2018, its hard to imagine what Roger and Jack faced as returning soldiers but LA Witt does a wonderful job of telling their story in a heartwarming entertaining Christmas package. Who says we have to wait till Christmas morning to unwrap all our treats?
I really don't think I can recommend this series enough. Is it one you need to read in order? No. As a matter of fact, I myself read book four before book three(a rarity for me but I accidentally opened Homecoming first and went with it😉). The Angel is the connection and since we don't really learn how she gets from one era to the next, it is not necessary to read in order. I will say that even though each entry is a standalone from a different time, I would highly recommend reading book one(Christmas Angel by Eli Easton) first simply because we learn how and where the angel came to be. It isn't something that will leave you lost if you don't start with the first one but personally I would be left wondering about her origins and it would leave me a bit distracted from completely enjoying each of the authors' entries, but that's just my personal opinion.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2018Two men who’ve know each other their whole lives share a stolen kiss before separating and ultimately going to fight in World War 2. On their return they find that the kiss they once shared was just the beginning of their love story. This story resonated with me in particular because my Uncle and his ‘best friend’ shared a home for over 50 years as confirmed bachelors. Their love story was beautiful, even though it had to be hidden in those times. Christmas Homecoming is a love letter to all those men and women who lived their true lives at a time when such things were forbidden.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2025Other than being set, at times, during the Christmas Holiday, this wasn't a Christmas romance, in my humble mind. It was a beautiful romance, though, and I'm very glad I've run across this author. Looking forward to my next read!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2019I typically shy away from period pieces, but this was a delight to read. The author has done an excellent job of creating interesting and believable characters that try to figure out how to love each other in a time when being openly gay was not an option. A great Sunday morning read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2018Our bewitched beauty takes us to the post-war era this time around and leave it to Witt to powerpack some extra feels. Roger and Jack have been best friends for as long as they can remember. Suddenly, the boys are whisked off to war and return very different men. Carefree grins and the invincibility that only young men boast have been replaced with dim half-smiles and nightmare shadows of piercing reality. Before they parted six years ago, they shared a stupendous farewell. A courageous kiss threw them both off kilter. Regardless of the timing, both clung to the hope and prayer that they may find their way to each other once more. And when the heavens above grant this wish, they are stricken to find they have become strangers. Everything has changed since that fated swimming hole goodbye. Or has it? Could their burning core remain once they break free from their combat-callused shells?
What's to like: We are introduced to Roger and Jack just as they are finishing school and spreading their wings. I'm so grateful we had the chance to see them glittering with innocent sparks. Witt allows each of them to take turns in sharing their story and again, I was thankful for the alternating voices. Roger starts back at that pivotal moment when he's struck with painful clarity, realizing he loves Jack. Then Jack continues on, half a dozen years later once they both have returned home. Their time at war may be over but the lingering effects will never cease. The scars they bear may not be visible but they are no less harrowing.
What's to love: Although the pages are just over a hundred, I felt we had plenty of time to get to know to both men. Roger was slightly more reserved compared to Jack's wild nature but I enjoyed them equally. It was difficult to see them hardened from war. Roger's family means well, but they have made arrangements for him to begin the next phase of his life. With a slight push and shove, they've set him up with a could-be-hopefully-fiancé childhood friend. It makes sense for him to marry. It's what's expected of them. But the war has given Roger an up close and personal reminder that life is too short for regrets. And he may not have given his best friend his heart before the war but he'll be damned if he denies him now. But they could never be? What will they do? Marry and live half a life with the picture-perfect wife? You'll just have to find out, now, won't you?
Beware of: In regards to the others in the series, this one is pleasant yet tinged with melancholy. They illustrate the struggles and anguish our soldiers endure long after their leave is over. They also remind of us of the torment gay men faced living and loving freely in the 1940s. Graciously, the glorious gift that a wooden statuette grants these two men is worth it all.
This book is for: If you need another reason to start this series, this one is a humdinger. I actually began the series with this homecoming. You can hop, skip and jump around if you like. So far, I've yet to be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lonely Christmas romance
I've just finished reading this delightful series and thoroughly enjoyed all of the books. There is a seventh one, The Magician's Angel, but I couldn't find it in hard copy and didn't want to read it electronically. Most of the books are novellas of just over 100 pages. My favourite titles were Soldier's Wish and Shrewd Angel, because they were longer and allowed more time for story and character development—216 and 294 pages respectively. I would have liked to see UK spelling used for the stories set in England and Commonwealth countries for greater authenticity because we not only spell differently, but pronounce differently, too. Highly recommended as light, easy-to-read Christmas romance stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jack gets a Rogering.!
Jack and Roger were meant to be together, and they were.
Males loving Males is still difficult, even in Britain.
But these 2 lads loved each other and survived a war.
This is a really lovely book, no bad language or hot sex, but just 2 lads who had the gutts to live their dream.
It is a book well worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good addition
4 ⭐️
Good addition to the series. I liked Roger and Jack both trying to return to life after the war. I liked that they both had other experiences outside of each other too.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good.
Jack and Roger go from boyhood friendship to adult in love and times being what they we're it's all done in secret. They part as boys and reconnect as men who still adore each other and vow to make a life together.
