It Happened on Christmas Eve: A gorgeous Christmas romcom that will make you laugh out loud! Kindle Edition
1. It's super cheesy
2. Everyone drinks boiled red wine that tastes like air freshener and pretends they enjoy it
3. Last year the man I was in love with decided that Christmas Day was a perfectly decent time to reveal that he did not feel the same way about me
So you can see why, on Christmas Eve, it's totally reasonable for me to just want to get home from work as soon as possible, close the curtains, eat my weight in noodles and watch horror movies until the whole thing is over. My boss, Marcy, has other ideas. Her son Adam broke his leg ice-skating and now she needs me to accompany him on his last minute Christmas errands around Notting Hill where we live. It wouldn't be half as bad if Adam wasn't the most irritatingly confident, annoyingly enthusiastic Christmas-giddy man I've ever encountered. And, well, a whole lot sexier than I expected he'd be...
It Happened on Christmas Eve is a funny and charming Christmas romance novella of around 20,000 words.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2024Very cute Novella by Kirsty Greenwood that takes place on one Christmas Eve. Having been dumped by her boyfriend last Christmas, Phoebe vines, all things to that holiday abhorrent. She intends to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, eating noodles and her pajamas and her own apartment. Phoebe‘s boss Marcy must spend Christmas Eve sorting out a problem for a client. She asks Phoebe to pick up her son Adam at the airport and make sure he arrives safely and his home. Having suffered a ski accident, Adam has a cast on his leg and needs assistance getting home. Spending time with Adam turns out to be not the unpleasant experience Phoebe anticipated. Arriving at the.HEA Is sweet.
And enjoyable, quick, and satisfying read.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2020(3.5 stars) This is almost a 4-star Christmas short for me, especially when I compare it to most of the Christmas-themed books I've read so far this season. Yes, it's a little early for me to start on Christmassy romance, but I'm thinking it may be now or never if things don't turn out the way I'd like in the next week or two and then I won't be in any mood to celebrate in December. So it has been Christmas in October for me for the past couple of weeks and this one is a pretty good read.
I had a little niggle with something near the end of the story that kept me from rounding that 3.5 stars to 4, but even so this was a fun escape from real life. The heroine here, Phoebe, is the very competent assistant to a successful interior decorator. She does her job well but isn't making any friends along the way. See, last Christmas Phoebe broke up with the guy she had thought was The One and since then she's been in a really lousy mood and full of unfriendly, closed-off, grumpy behavior.
Now a year has passed and it's Christmas again. She's still smarting from the breakup, so she wants nothing to do with holiday cheer, carols, decorations, fun parties, etc. No, thanks, says she. She just wants to be alone to wallow in her "aloneness". And, frankly, most people would prefer she be alone. She would only mess up their Christmas cheer.
On the other hand, hero Adam is her total opposite. He's the son of Phoebe's boss. A successful writer and all-around pleasant person. Everybody likes him. He's so friendly, so open and agreeable, so full of joie de vivre. (Also, it must be said, so handsome.) I almost found him to be a bit obnoxious at times, probably because there's a bit of a Christmas grinch in me, just like in Phoebe, but for a different reason.
So, yeah, you know what is going to happen. An accidental meeting with someone from the past and a day spent with Adam. Adam is going to charm the grinch right out of her, but it's a fun little story. It all takes place in the space of one day and is a pretty fast personality turnaround for Phoebe. From Christmas Eve Day to Christmas Day. Whatever the case, although we know it's not great literature, it is fun.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2019Fun and festive, with some hilarious scenes - pushing a man in a wheelchair, Christmas tree, and decorations through a crowded pub on Christmas Eve! Would make a great Netflix rom-com.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2019This story seemed to start of slowly, the day on Chrisas Eve. Pheobe, modern-day Scrooge, is counting down the minutes at work, until she can go home and ignore Christmas. Then meets Adam, her boss's son, who makes her, begrudgingly, take him on all sorts of Christmas errands. Adam's exhuberant personality may be just the thing to defrost Pheobe's ice-cold exterior.
This story is such a sweet, light-hearted romance. There is so much personality in the two main characters. The story is so endearing. This is a perfect holiday read for those needing a little more laughter, romantic-tingles, and magic for Christmas.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2020Phoebe, 100% Scrooge, and assistant to high-powered London designer, hates Christmas. Actually, ever since the bad break from her horrible ex, she’s been a grump about most things and keeps a running shit list of things that piss her off. The only thing she wants for Christmas is a Cup o’ Noodle and some alone time far away from all the holiday cheer.
Instead, circumstances throw her in the path of Adam, the joyful, jovial, and exceedingly attractive human embodiment of the holiday spirit. Adam (who is encumbered with a broken leg (but not a broken spirit! 😭) ) is Phoebe’s boss’ son so she feels (because she really wants her own office) she must cater to Adam’s every whim. Such as: buying a Christmas tree, tromping through the snow, listening to carolers etc.
Adam charms everyone around him… except Phoebe. But that can’t last long, can it? (Spoiler: No, it cannot). This sweet, sassy novella takes place almost entirely over Christmas Eve so it’s essentially a play-by-play of holiday shenanigans as Phoebe pushes Adam’s wheelchair through the snowy setting of Notting Hill. It’s a quick, fun, adorable read that’s guaranteed to get your festive feelings flowing.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2019I love Kirsty Greenwood’s novels and short stories. This was another read to add to my list of reads I love by her. She’s so quirky and witty that It makes me want to be with her. 5 stars for sure!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect December Read
A Christmas novella? To read during December? By one of my favourite authors? Yes please! This book is absolutely everything I could have wanted and more.
If you love your Christmas tales more A Christmas Carol than Hallmark Christmas movie you're going to love this book, and there are plenty of Hallmark moments in this book, don't get me wrong, but I love the fact that the premise behind this one is coming to Christmas eve being soooo anti-Christmas. I like it because not everyone loves Christmas/gets as excited about it as I do and that's OK. It's great to see it reflected in a book and Phoebe makes for a great protagonist because of that.
There is plenty of festive fun in this novel even though phoebe herself is very against the holiday, she has her reasons to be and that is absolutely fine, I love how strong minded she is and I love that she is determined in everything that she does. There are some fab Christmas movie quotes as well as just general awesome pop-culture references in this novella and I really think Phoebe and I would get along in real life!
We have to talk about the fact that this is a novella rather than a full length novel. I love the fact that it is so short because it is so hard to find time to actually sit down and read at this time of year and you really need books like this to come into your life that you can pick up and read just one or two chapters, they make you laugh, they make you feel a little warm and fuzzy and even just picking up a couple of chapters at a time mean that you can actually finish the book whilst it is still December.
So thank you Kirsty Greenwood from bringing us a novella that is funny and has a great main character, is a great length and therefore is the perfect read to pick up this December.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as Much
This novella is not as fantastic as Big Sexy Love. I may have felt that way because of little things. However, the main characters are really interesting and funny. I believe it's worth a try so you can get your own feeling about it. I may be biased because of the topic. 😉

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun, sweet read
It feels like forever since I last read a Kirsty Greenwood book so I was very happy when she announced a Christmas novella. I mean, I would've preferred a full length novel but this will tide me over for now. It's funny and sweet and just perfect for the holiday season. I loved and could totally relate to main character Phoebe so it was lovely to see her open up. Also loved Adam even though I'm not sure I really got to know him. He is however charming and flirty and basically swoon worthy. I adored the banter between them, sparks definitely fly.
My only complaint is that I wanted more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Christmas Candy
A little bit of sweetness in the Christmas spirit. There’s hope in the holiday spirit, even if your tradition is pot noodles on Christmas Eve.
