The Little Christmas Waif
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
Cara Cooper’s third Christmas starts out as the best she’s ever known. As the daughter of a kitchen maid, she’s just old enough to be really excited. When a kind stranger appears and takes Cara to a beautiful house filled with toys and Christmas treats of every description, she is thrilled. Little does the toddler know that the kind stranger, Edna, has an ulterior motive.
Now kidnapped, Cara’s life is set on a collision course with tragedy. As Edna descends into madness, Cara falls from her favor and ends up as a maidservant herself, taken from her real mother so long ago that she barely remembers her.
One Christmas after another brings nothing but sorrow and hardship. The only hope Cara has is sweet and lovely Levi Hall, a childhood friend who slowly becomes her true love. But as Edna grows more and more cruel toward Cara, can Levi come through for her in time? Will Cara ever have a real Christmas?

- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2022I think this is one of the best books Faye Godwin has written. It is so sad for someone's child to be stolen, and then to be treated so badly. All because she was scared and cried so much for her mama. Then the father brings home a little boy from the workhouse. He never knew his parents, so th mother favors him, and send little Cara to the kitchen to work. No bed or privileges for her. But there are some twists and turns, and a happy ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2021This was definitely a page turner. Even though it was so full of hatred and sadness, the author's characters were well developed. I only wish that Aunt Giselle could have paid the price for what she did to Cara and her mother. I'll be reading more from this author. This was my first book of her, but she really knows how to tell a story.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2020A very good story about a young child that is stolen and then discarded as a servant and hated by the woman that stole her
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2020Cara’s story defies your imagination. It is beautifully crafted as all of Faye Godwin’s stories are. Rich in description, sadness, and hope. There’s even joy in it. Some character’s are true and consistent. Others are mean and warped. This is where the hopeless, sad life is reconciled with the happy ever after.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2020I had shivers up and down a few times while reading this book, to think someone could be so cruel to someone they had actually stolen from the Birthmother. My late husband never knew who his Dad was,it also bothered him he never knew.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2020I did like the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2020Good read
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2020Cara was the young child of a worker in the kitchen of a wealthy home. Edna was visiting her sister and saw little Cara and made the decision to take Cara home with her and to become her mother. Cara cried and cried for her mother and would not settle down. Edna's husband decided an additional child would make his wife happy, so he brought 10 year old Levi to give her for Christmas. Levi had no family left so he was thrilled to get a family. Edna turned against Cara and treated her as a servant very unloving.
This is a very well done story with well thought out characters, and is very well told of the life of Cara toward a happy ever after.
Everything comes out the way it should and well worth your reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read
Really enjoyed this book although some of the child’s thoughts for a three year old were not plausible. Karen C
