City in the Sky Kindle Edition
Erik Tarverro is a skilled blacksmith, a better swordsman—and hated for his mixed aeradi parentage. Denied mastery of his craft in the human city he grew up in, he accepts a risky contract from a dangerous stranger.
With new enemies at his heels, he leaps at the chance to join his father's people in the sky city of Newport. Despite his human blood, he finds his place among the aeradi: heir to an ancient noble family.
His duty leads him to sailing the skies and learning what it means to lead soldiers. But Erik's enemies will have blood, and the peace between his people and the Draconan dragon riders is like a powder keg. All it would take is one spark—and dragons will fly on his newfound city in the sky.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2015I really enjoyed reading this one - a solid start to what could become a great series. The characters are well drawn and the story is interesting - though i think its fair to say that it's light (in the sense of good triumphing over evil and a lack of Machiavellian plots) and fairly predictable - but then i often find myself eating my favourite food because i enjoy it... and this is a similar experience.
The plot is neither that complex nor original - which means describing it likely gives too much away, but please don't get me wrong - i think it's a really well executed and enjoyable story.... - so all that said: Our hero a blacksmith, a swordsman general all round good guy... and a "half-breed" decides for various reasons to visit his father's family, in doing so discovering that he's the long lost heir ... and that some people still can't seem to get over the fact that he's half-breed! Suffice it to say adventure ensues enemies and friends are met, ships are sailed and cities are visited ... and in the background the drums of war are beating... it's a good setting; and for all our hero's abilities he is tested, and not everything goes his way... so all in all a pretty fun ride .. and its possible to sit back and enjoy it knowing that you'll get to a destination that you want and that you are familiar with.
The world is reasonably original - yes there are dwarves and some elf like fellas you never really get to meet, but there are flying ships and cities ....and dragons, cannons, a novel magic system and two human like races which are in their own way different ... its enjoyable to think of and offers real promise for the continuing.
The two things i think make this book a good read are; firstly, a character who is unashamedly Good (in the moral sense) and secondly, a world that left one wanting more, there are hints .... but you are left craving more ...
Against it are a predictive plot and characters which are a little obvious - that said i really enjoyed the experience.
it's not a masterwork and it won't set the litrary wold alight - but considering the cost and the fact that its an indie book... bravo.
I'd defiantly recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading classic fantasy/ fan of indie fantasy - and think that most fantasy fans would enjoy it .... as ever, don't just trust me -download a sample and see how it goes.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2016I purchased this book on the strength of my experiences with his two better known series, Castle Federation and Starship's Mage. I was not disappointed. Given the amount of world building Stewart had to do, the book started off a little slow, but then it picked up its pace and didn't slow down. I loved the world he created. It is interesting that this year I read two books featuring wind ships (I hesitate to call them air ships as this brings to mind unwieldy blimps): Jim Butcher's The Aeronaut's Windlass and Stewart's City in the Sky. While I fully expected to enjoy Butcher's book, I was delightfully surprised by Stewart's. There is action, heroics and sacrifice - and dragons.
Is the book perfect? No. Having now purchased all of his books (after reading many of them at no cost through Kindle Unlimited - that's how much I liked them), it strikes me that Stewart was still finding his touch as a writer when he wrote this. This story could have been a little longer. A little more work on characterization wouldn't have gone amiss, nor would a little more description/explanation of the society. I don't mention this to discourage anyone from reading this adventure, because what is good about the story far outweighs any quibbles I might have. Instead, I think a little understanding of where the author was in the growth of his craft will enhance the reading experience. Having said that, this book is Fun with a capital F - the perfect read for an evening or weekend when all you want to do is immerse yourself in adventure in a new and interesting world.
City in the Sky reminds me of the books that I snuck out of my father's science fiction/fantasy library to read when I was a child - books by authors like Andre Norton, Gordon R. Dickson, Anne McCaffrey and Marion Zimmer Bradley. I loved reading those books and felt much the same when I read this one. I hope that there will be more adventures of Erik Tarverro and that City in the Sky becomes available as an audiobook. I will be first in line to purchase both.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2022An entertaining story of a part human, part Aeradi swordsmith whose world is turned upside down when he accepts a new job from a Draconan assassin. The assassin requests a new set of crystal-forged sky steel weapons, something the swordsmith’s Aeradi blood allows him to make. The assassin uses his new weapons to try to kill the swordsmith, only to discover the swordsmith is also a highly skilled swordsman, killing the assassin.
The young swordsmith flees to the Aeradi floating city of Newport where he finds his Aeradi inheritance, a new purpose, pursuit by Draconan assassins and a powder keg of Aeradi and Draconan politics.
A fast-paced, standalone novel that I’d really like to see a follow-up novel to continue the story.
I received an ARC and purchased my own copy to support the author.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2022This is quite the departure from Glynn's normal (as of late) space adventures. But, it's such a great read!
This is a standalone novel, no prior reading required. It features a male hero, without any ridiculous romance plot. We're introduced to an entirely new world, and although Glynn doesn't go deep into world building, it feels natural. There is enough detail to keep me satisfied and not bore me.
If you're looking for an easy, interesting, fantasy read with a good hero and plot, look no further!
I am an advance copy reader, and I am extremely lucky to be so. I'm never disappointed with a book by Glynn Stewart!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read
I have read the majority of Glynn Stewart's books and have thoroughly enjoyed them all. I can't wait for the next in this series!

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as I expected for Glynn Stewart - great!
I found it an extremely enjoyable read, and read it in one sitting, more or less. Its a story that cries out for a sequel, and describes a quite interesting world that I want to see more of.
If I have one gripe? Is that we first meet him as a Smith, clearly having put a lot of effort and passion into his skills - and when he leaves his home, never so much as mentions smithing again. I found that odd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read
I didn't enjoy the opening chapter as I've read too many with blacksmiths in the last few years, but the entire story is riveting and the world-building breathes new life into the traditional Tolkien style fantasy and the hero's growth throughout is something that is lacking in most other stories.
With a few minor nit-picks, I'd give it a 4.8/5 - it's set for a sequel we might never get, and the hero probably is too skilled for his background.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun but flawed
The book is a fun read and a great introduction to a new world. But it feels like it has some big pacing issues. Maybe some events could have been cut to make more room for others to breathe.
