The Colors Between Us (Lonely Hearts Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 339 ratings

Donny

Shorter. Quieter. Nicer. Softer. All words that compare me to my sister, to compare me to everyone else around me. They used to hurt, but not so much anymore. Everyone treats me like a second-place competitor…except for Roland. He looks at me differently, with anger and inspiration in his eyes, but also attraction. An undeniable kind of attraction.

Roland

I've spent years looking for inspiration at the bottom of a bottle. It's not working, and neither am I. As if losing my boyfriend, my career, and my muse weren't bad enough, now I'm on the brink of losing my mind too. At least I was, but then I met him. With Donny comes fresh inspiration, but he deserves more than the scattered pieces of me. I know I have to get my life together. I’ve failed at many things before, but I can’t afford to fail now. Either I succeed at conquering the demons inside of me, or I lose Donny forever.

I'm pretty sure I cried at least five buckets worth of tears over this book. The Colors Between Us is everything and then some. If you don't want to feel, deeply, then don't read this book. That's all I have to say about that.

Kate Hawthorne didn't just give us a book. She gave us life. She gave us the ugly parts of life and she makes no apologies for it and I am just...I'm speechless. This woman took my soul, splattered it across the pages of this book, and then lit them on fire. And I liked it. Yes, yes I did.

Roland and Donny do not have an easy go of things. I do not recommend this book to you unless you have about six hours to read and a whole box of tissues. It's just that good y'all.

I wasn't going into this book completely blind, there's a small trigger warning at the beginning of this book. It helps set the stage for what you might encounter, but of course you don't know until you actually read. The pain that Roland suffers is real and it lives inside real people and my heart broke and re-broke for him.I could feel every single emotion and ounce of pain that Roland did as if it were my own. It made for a very difficult read. It also made for a very fulfilling one.

How can I say that? How can I go and talk about how intense this book is but also say that it's lovely and fulfilling and so damn perfect in all it's flawed glory at the same time?

    Simple: it's necessary.

Because while Roland is fiction, while his situation is fiction it's also life. And there's a beautiful type of hope reading about the same things you're going through and seeing that it is possible to be okay. Never great maybe, never one hundred percent probably, but okay enough to trust in the love someone else has for you.

Adonis, sweet, patient, caring Donny. He was just everything. Not only did he help Roland realize the important things in life. But he found himself as well. He found what it meant to love someone wholly. He knew what he was worth and he wasn't settling for less. He didn't settle for less.

The passion between the two explodes across the page.

That passion led to more. It lead to hurt, it lead to love, it lead to Roland accepting his limits and then exceeding them. It lead to two very passionate yet hurting men finding themselves individually and with each other. Donny might not have been the one hurting as deeply as Roland, but he was still hurting. It showed in all his actions.

Kate Hawthorne, I hate you. You broke me. I don't think I'll ever been the same. Thank you for that. This book is so important and it's so needed today.

I may be too old for this book. Maybe it's because my son was involved with a woman who had serious problems; he tried to save her, and after they had been broken up for a while, she overdosed (we'll never know if it was intentional or accidental) and died. Because of this real life horror show, I kept wanting to yell at Donny to sprint in the other direction, far away from the hot mess that Roland obviously was! What saved this book, though, was that Roland decided to get better for himself, not necessarily so that he could hold onto Donny. Also, Donny didn't forgive easily and his hurt was very real. For those of you who love books with a lot of sex, this one is perfect for you. I'm looking forward to investigating other works by this author; "The Colors Between Us" really made me think!

Fearless! I'm pretty sure this is what fearless looks like. Amazing, sexy characters frantically pushing and pulling at one another forever trying! Drastically flawed and tragically beautiful in all the struggles that is the human condition. Kate Hawthorne creates tiny multiverses that grip you, clawing at your heart, digging in and making you bleed. It's magical!!!😘 Donny and Roland will live inside you and sneak up on you when you least expect them!😎 They are sexy, sensual and damaged. Just like us! Captured and deliciously spread out for your enjoyment!😁

It takes some grit and determination to get into this book because it starts out with so much despair and sadness. It does get better and there is hope. But initially it is a hard read because of Roland’s depression which is central to the whole book. Roland improves health wise throughout the book. But it is indeed a difficult journey. Donny is incredible as a patient boyfriend and lover – who actually has a great deal of insight into Roland. The HEA leaves the reader knowing these two are committed to each other but still face a challenging albeit worthwhile relationship.

It wasn't fluffy and romantic, more heart wrenching and real. I did not see Donny's story going quite like that. I did know it was going to be full of feels, so I admit I skipped from book #1 to #4. I had to wait for the mood to hit me for this read. I'm so glad I did, because even prepare, I still cried. I like how real this was with Roland's mental illness. There weren't any quick fixes, and it strongly affected both Roland and Donny. And Donny was so damn strong and perfect for Roland. It's so hard to be inside your own head sometimes and to make others understand that you know what you think and feel may not be real. But that doesn't stop those thoughts and feelings from occurring, and it's so hard to keep sh!t straight sometimes, to keep it handled. This was a great book, but yeah, be prepared to have your heart squeezed.

This was a beautiful book. Roland was beautifully broken and Donny was beautifully strong. It was a little hard to read at times because Roland’s depression was so real. There was a lot of hope though because of Donny’s acceptance that Roland would always be a little bit broken. Come to think of it, both of them were strong and their romance was amazing.

Loved it. Great read. Shows people who suffer from depression can’t always control how they react even when they see and feel what they are doing.
