Compelled by the Vampire: A Paranormal Romance (Vampire Enforcement Agency Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 318 ratings

How do you survive when you become the one thing you despise?

It’s vamps like Roric who make humans believe vampires have a right to live in human society. As leader of the Vampire Enforcement Agency, his job is to find and capture the vampires who betray humans’ recently-earned trust. Until one human woman tempts him to break all the rules.

When Roric intercepts a rogue vampire attack and finds Caroline dying, he can’t resist her blood or her beauty, and in a moment of passion, he does the unthinkable. But Caroline despises the monsters who killed her parents, and she’d rather die than be a vampire.

With vampire attacks at an all-time high and Caroline resisting him at every turn, Roric's job, his family, even his life is at risk. Worse, Caroline's attacker wants her just as bad as Roric does, and he knows Roric’s secret. Roric will do anything to earn Caroline’s trust, but can he keep her safe long enough to convince her that life as a vampire isn’t a death sentence?

Fans of The Black Dagger Brotherhood by JR Ward, The Vampire Diaries by LJ Smith, and The Sookie StackHouse Series (True Blood) by Charlaine Harris will love COMPELLED BY THE VAMPIRE.

I love that this is book one of a series because I certainly didn’t get enough of Roric & Caroline to satisfy my bloodlust! Not to mention Taven, Ivy, Piper & Alec. The plot is different and takes unexpected turns. The characters are so realistic that I feel as if I know them personally. Another Kellie McAllen can’t miss series!

I like Caroline. She is independent. Her biggest drawbacks are her prejudice against vampires, and several selfish actions she commits because of it. Roric is a vampire cop who turns her. He tries to help her adapt. He can be overbearing, at times, as he tries to help her. Rogue vampires are on the loose. I like the action. I like the steamy scenes.

Overall, this was an intriguing plot with great potential in the world building. Rouge vampires, new vampires and an agency meant to monitor them all. Great ideas! However, I bumbled through this, lost to disjointed pages and extreme reactions - not to mention confusion over when the actual main characters are! The blurb leads me to believe Caroline and Roric are the stars, and while the majority of the text appears from their third person POV, there are plenty of of other POV chapters from other characters with no clear delineation in the chapter head of WHO we are viewing now.

    Pros:
    - World building is fascinating.
    - Some Character development.
    - Meta Plot is intriguing.

    Cons:
    - Disjointed.
    - Too many additional POV chapters from other characters.
    - Gets confusing.
    - After deep POV introspection, when the final decision is made my Caroline, we do NOT get to peer into her head as to why!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new vampire series!!
Reviewed in Australia on September 23, 2018
What a great start to the series! I have read the prequel, but this book really took it a step further.

The worldbuilding is fantastic, the characters well developed, and the alternating POV really helps fill the story and allow us to get to know the characters better.

I can't help but love Roric - don't get me wrong, I like Caroline but she while she had reason to hate vampires, she really didn't get to try to know them and judged an entire species on the actions of a mere few rogues. With vampires being exposed for 10yrs now she had no excuse for that narrow view and prejudice. I'm glad she started to open up to Roric, but I also despair that she'll break his heart because she can't trust him, and still deep down hasn't accepted that he's different, and acknowledged to herself that she's a vampire and she's not evil.

I look forward to more in the series and would recommend this to any vampire/supernatural lover.

I’m in complete awe for this book. The plot built, the personages, stream of action. Everything is perfect. Kellie McAllen has “Captured” me in her web from first words of prequel, my addiction only deepened with this one. If you love vampires - read it. If you don’t like vampires - read it as well, you will love them after that. It’s one complicated love story, and one story to love.
