Confrontation (Baldwin's Legacy Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,012 ratings

A new flagship. An unfamiliar crew. An old nemesis.

Thomas Baldwin has been appointed captain of the state-of-the-art cruise ship
Constantine, named after his heroic grandfather. When their first diplomatic mission turns deadly, all signs point to the return of a former adversary, one the Concord claims to have defeated five decades earlier.

No one has seen Baldwin’s commander, Treena Starling, since her previous ship was destroyed in a gruesome battle, leaving her the sole survivor. Can her secret help them rescue one of their crew members from captivity at the enemy’s hands?

When the Concord advises Baldwin to walk away from a fight, he must rely on his new crew, including the AI based on his younger grandfather, Constantine, to make the right decisions. One wrong step, and Captain Baldwin could be throwing the entire Concord into another intergalactic war...and this time they might not be so lucky.

Confrontation is the first book in the epic new Baldwin’s Legacy series, written by the best-selling author of the Survivors series.

I've enjoyed other books by this author and was looking forward to a new series by him. I was not disappointed. His characters are believable and feel authentic, and he introduces us to some unusual characters.

I like the premise of the captain being assigned to a new shiny ship named for his grandfather and for how his grandfather appears in the story. I like all of the secondary characters as well, some have a comfortably familiar feel to them - for example, the doctor almost reminds me of Star Trek's McCoy. I like his attitude - curious about everything and interested, friendly, casual, yet professional. But he's really nothing like McCoy so, now I'm puzzled. Anyway...

The plot is straightforward and obvious, until you realize it isn't. There are surprises throughout, and lots of exciting action. It's well written and a good story. I highly recommend it.

Once again, this author does not disappoint in delivering interesting, believable characters in a captivating story. The only reason I gave 4 vs 5 stars is because the story started off a little slow in the beginning. It took a while for me to get into it & be fully engaged. Definitely worth reading. Looking forward to Book 2 in this series.

This is my first exposure to Mr. Hystad’s work – I am quite impressed by his deep character development and vivid accounts that pull the reader in and make him/her feel involved in the story. This book is a page-turner - there is a lot of action, with several sub-plots that make you question who is being honest and what information is really true. This is a great start to what is hopefully a long series. I received an advance copy of the book, but I really liked it and bought a copy to support this worthy author – I think I’ve found another favorite!!

I was thrilled to have found a series that pulled me into the story with such clever concepts and high-risk adventure. That was until midway through the story when a small military craft was about to depart on a covert mission into the perilous unknown, but was suddenly delayed at the very last minute, on account of the captain’s decision to permit a fresh-from-the-oven civilian boy to ride along as a passenger. Was it because the boy was highly-skill in some way that was essential to the mission’s success? Nope. It was because the boy had “fire in his belly”, grit, spunkiness. Really? I’m sorry to say it was down hill from there.

This is a new universe for me, and new author, and I enjoyed the characters and storyline. After reading too many future dystopian novels, it’s good to read one that is more optimistic.
