FROM CATHERINE CURZON AND ELEANOR HARKSTEAD
A Captivating Captains story
For a lonely Cornish lifeboatman and an author who’s more used to crime scenes than love scenes, this Christmas is going to be very merry indeed!
When Jago Treherne agrees to man the Polneath lifeboats one snowy Christmas, he knows he can forget turkey and all the trimmings.
Yet when he boards a seemingly empty yacht and stumbles upon sexy Sam Coryton enjoying an energetic afternoon below decks, Jago soon realizes that he might be unwrapping a very different sort of Christmas gift this year!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2018*I received a free ARC of this story, with thanks to the authors. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*
I could go for the obvious pun and describe this story as a ‘quickie’ but that would be doing an injustice to the authors, who have managed (as usual) to create a touching paean to true love and romance in just a few short pages.
In this story we meet another Captivating Captain, a lifeboatman, and his famous author childhood friend… or more.
Obviously more! As usual there is some steamy sex, lots of sweetly heartfelt dialogue and a warm, fuzzy glow of a happy ending. And a cute pet. There is always a cute pet (just as there should be!).
The authors also manage to avoid the common trap of misunderstandings and miscommunications for their external relationship conflict, which always makes me doubt a couple’s suitability…how would you live with someone if you can’t talk to them?! Instead, Jago and Sam both have their own baggage from past relationships but show an exemplary openness and honesty that bodes well for their New Year and further.
The Captain’s Cornish Christmas is a short, sweet and sexy story that is ideal for these cold festive nights. Recommended with a roaring fire, a glass of mulled wine, and some cosy company!
Only one set of double doors remained in the living quarters now and they stood, as they would in a murder mystery, right at the end of the hallway ahead of Jago. He hadn’t seen a master bedroom so this must be it. Despite himself the lifeboat captain, sturdy, brave, fearless, paused with his hands on the door handles. He drew in a deep breath, told himself he had seen worse than a dead author and pushed the doors open.
Jago had only time to see a brief impression– a figure, sprawled across a bed. A naked body. Was this the work of some depraved psychopath? “Bloody hell, no– Sam!”
“Jesus bloody Christ!” Sam’s hand– the hand that hadn’t been busy elsewhere– flashed out and seized the pristine white sheet. He pulled it over his naked, sweat-sheened body at the same time as he tried to jump from the bed. Instead he succeeded in catching his feet in the crisp linen, ending up in a tumbled heap on the floor, bare bottom uppermost.
“Everything’s fine,” award-winning author Sam Coryton, whose latest book was to be dramatized as the BBC’s big Boxing Day drama, exclaimed. “I was just– I was– I fell asleep!”

Review by Steph Warren of Bookshine and Readbows blog
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2018You can not ask for a more cute, sexy, and completely awkward re-acquainting for childhood friends Jago and Sam. This short novella is an absolute treat from the minute Jago walks in on Sam having a "cozy" lie-in scaring the beejeesus out of him leaving him with his backside up in the air bare and a black eye to boot till you swipe the last page. Now for some who are not fans of insta-love may find the boys connection off-putting but truthfully since they are childhood friends it isn't really an insta-connection and really does it matter? Whether we all like reading it in a book or not(BTW: I do love it when done right and Sam and Jago are definitely done right😉) we have to admit it does happen in life so I say just go with it and as this is a holiday story I like to think that there is a little holiday magic at play to help the boys along😉.
This is only the second story in the Captivating Captains series that I have actually read but they are all on my Kindle and look forward to catching up and for further entries as well. These are standalone entries and can be read in any order, so if The Captain's Cornish Christmas is your first you won't be disappointed and know that even though it may be short on pages it is jam packed with sweet-spicy goodness that is perfect for the holiday season and really quite yummy for anytime of year.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2020This is one of the loveliest books in the series, one that pits a lonely tradesman, Jago, with a more worldly (and apparently gorgeous) long-distance admirer Sam in a lovely Cornish village during Christmastime.
Both characters are very well developed even though the narrative is third person and mostly focused on Jago, but we never lose Sam along the way. How they live and eventually how they love is a highlight of good plotting and writing, and simply a very pleasant read no matter what time of year.
My only complaint is the cover is too stylized to give you and impression of what they look like--the men on the cover look like early 20is, the characters themselves at closer to 30.
Cheers!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2018A standalone novella in Catherine Curzon and Eleanor Harkstead’s Captivating Captains series, The Captain’s Cornish Christmas is easily the comfiest Christmas read of the season. If you’re in the mood for a beautifully written, real old-fashioned romance, I highly recommend this heartwarming tale.
In The Captain’s Cornish Christmas the authors show us that timing is everything when it comes to love. After admiring each other as lads, only to go their separate ways as adults, both men have entertained some vivid fantasies over the years. Now that they have the opportunity to get reacquainted, will reality live up to everything they’ve imagined?
It doesn’t take long for the walls to come down. Just like old friends they tease and flirt, and neither one holds back or tries to spare the other’s feelings. I would love this in audio as I could listen to these two men banter all day long in that sexy, lilting Cornish dialect.
Catherine Curzon and Eleanor Harkstead truly capture the ambiance of the settings time and place. It’s easy to picture the men sitting together in the pub, walking along the blustery shore, and gazing out the cottage windows at an ocean view.
Everything about The Captain’s Cornish Christmas lends itself to romance, and the promise of a very merry Christmas. So snuggle up somewhere comfy, with a glass of wine or a pot of tea and enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Romantic Christmas read
I really enjoyed the setting of this story and the storyline itself was pacy with plenty going on, just like the previous Captain books. Plenty of sexual tension and well-written romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short story leaving you wanting more
A chance coming together on the seas off the Cornish coast brings together two former school mates who now in their thirds finally come together on Christmas Eve in more ways than one. Sweet, romantic and very horny.
