Counting Fence Posts Kindle Edition
As the temperature outside plummets, the atmosphere inside the car slowly heats up. Henry learns the true reason for Marc’s chilly distance—he’s not exactly straight… maybe… and he’s been fantasizing about Henry’s mouth, among other things. Confession laid out, Marc is all for sharing body heat… and more. Henry isn’t interested in being an experiment, but as the night and cold deepen, he could be convinced to balance certain risk against uncertain reward.

About the author

If aliens ever land on Earth, Kelly Jensen will not be prepared, despite having read over a hundred stories of the apocalypse. Still, she will pack her precious books into a box and carry them as she strives to survive. It’s what bibliophiles do.
Kelly is the author of over twenty-five novels, novellas, and short stories, including the Chaos Station series, co-written with Jenn Burke. Some of what she writes is speculative, but mostly it’s just about a guy losing his socks and/or burning dinner. Because life isn’t all conquering aliens and mountain peaks. Sometimes finding a happy ever after is all the adventure we need.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2020Two twenty something M&A professionals drive from Chicago to Boston on Christmas Eve and get trapped on the side of the road when a blizzard overtakes them. Excellent dialogue expands the characters' persona as a discovery and maturing process weaves into the survival process. Great writing, thoughtful read.
As I am a gatherer of books, I collect books and ebooks from a variety of sources: Goodreads wins, BookBub, BookFunnel, Riffle, Prolific Works, emails from authors and publishers, and others. I do lose track of their sources. But, as a reader, I feel I should give an honest, unencumbered review for all I read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2019You'd think "one night stuck in a snow storm" would be an overdone cliché but you could not be more wrong here. This was so unexpected but done so well! The relationship between the two MC's have been brewing for some time, whether they each knew about it or not, the simmer and heat was building. It all comes to a head (pun totally intended) in the back seat of a car while stranded in a blizzard. Trust me, this works!! I can't wait to read the rest in this series. It's gonna heat up even more I'm sure.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2019Not a bad stranded in a snowstorm at Christmas time, this time with a twist of being stuck in a car with your workplace crush.
So, I read this quickly and enjoyed it mainly until it just ended so Marc was left still being too much of a jerk while Henry was wonderful
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2017I received an ARC from the author. This was the first book I've read by Ms. Jensen.
I love the dreamy quality of the story. How tentative their friendship was and how both Marc and Henry were afraid of moving forward. Obviously Marc has a less than ideal relationship with his family in comparison to Henry. Being forced together in a snow bound car on the side of a road leads to a conversation both have been wanting for years...though neither knew it about the other.
I'm so looking forward to reading the second book in the series and what I hope will be a HEA for this couple.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2020A really excellent story where Marc finds his sexuality and Henry lights the way through the sexual tunnal that he must traverse. This all happens while the two survive the night in a blizzard in their car that is off the road. Secrets are relayed to each other and lustful attraction, romance and the starting of love happens as they fight for survival.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2021This little novella is positively lovely and kept me engaged from beginning to end. This is a new-to-me author and I was so excited by how vivid the storytelling was. I felt like I was in the car with them (don’t I wish). I was even happier to see their story continues!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2020This was a surprisingly good short story that explores two coworkers and their feelings towards one another. The catch is that one of them has never been attracted to a man before this. Add in a dangerous roadside stranding and you have an interesting read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2016I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
Counting Fence Posts is part road trip and part holiday story, with a nice dose of sexual discovery. After their flight is diverted and grounded due to weather, Henry finds himself stuck in the car with his senior colleague and the object of his fantasies, Marc, as they try to make their way from Syracuse to Boston on Christmas Eve. When an accident diverts them from the main highway to side roads, Henry tries to distract himself from Marc’s presence by counting fence posts. Despite Marc’s awkward attempts at conversation, Henry attempts to keep his eyes on his side of the car – no lusting after the straight guy. However, Mother Nature has bigger plans for the men and as the blizzard changes direction, Marc is forced to stop on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. A failed, pig-headed attempt to “do something” leads to the men being forced to get closer than Henry ever dreamed they would and his holiday wish might just come true.
I really enjoyed Counting Fence Posts for a number of reasons. Not only are the characters entertaining in their bluntness and their vulnerability, but they felt like real people. In fact, the realism is one of the things that I enjoyed most about the story, specifically when it comes to the realities of intimacy in the middle of a snowstorm. I give the author credit for making Henry such a realist that he actually thinks that it’s too cold for anything to happen. Far too often, romances get caught up in the fantasy and characters are having sex, buck naked in weather conditions that cause frostbite. Not this time, the guys not only bundle up in layers to beat back the cold, but when they do finally engage in some skin-on-skin action, very little skin is exposed and they’re very cognizant of minimizing fluid on their clothing – don’t want to freeze to death in sticky shorts. Despite its short length, Jensen does a nice job of fleshing out the characters through their conversations, infusing the story with humor, understanding, and a touch of holiday cheer, all while laying the foundation for a potential relationship. I would love to read more about these characters, so my Christmas in July wish would be for a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cold and heated
From the professional seemingly cold personalities of the two protagonists to the warmth of opening up to acquaintance, and maybe more, on a personal level - from the freezing chill of a blizzard trapped in a car stopped on the side of the road to the heat of physical and emotional closeness, all described with imagery that has the reader shivering with chills of winter snow and heated exploration

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful short story
I don’t usually read short stories as I prefer more in depth scenarios, however, this is a beautiful sweet story that’s worth a read

5.0 out of 5 stars My dose of happy Christmas and winter reading 2016/17 #5
A blizzard forces two young, successful financial consultants to change from plane to rental car to make it towards Boston in time for the holiday season. Henry has been secretly mooning over Marc ever since he started working for this company. But Marc seems straight as a bow and mostly avoiding or lecturing him, until he sets their car into a snow drift on a totally deserted country road. Now they can't run from each other and their first honest conversation developes. Henry is stunned to realize Marc has been feeling the same attraction about him, too. With all the snow and the cold seeping into the stranded car, both guys have to bundle up everything their meager buissenes suitcases contain.
It is a real pity the story is so short, as Mrs Jensen keeps it easy flowing with refreshing dialoges and humor. „Thanks“ to all those layers of clothes Henry and Marc can't do much besides kissing and snuggeling together. Still the fundation of a promising friendship is layed, when they later get unceremoniously rescued by a snow plow driver. Despite its shortness Marc and Henry really grew on me and I would love to read more about them and how their new found relationship is progressing. Thanks you Kelly Jensen for this enjoyable winter story!
