CRIMINAL INTENTIONS: Season One, Episode One: THE CARDIGANS Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 916 ratings

Read the complete first two seasons of this thrilling, action-packed investigative suspense romance with two strong-willed detectives, an undeniable slow burn attraction, and a terrifying puppetmaster in the shadows before Season Three returns!

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

When a string of young queer men turn up dead in grisly murders, all signs point to the ex-boyfriend—but what should be an open-and-shut case is fraught with tension when BPD homicide detective Malcolm Khalaji joins up with a partner he never wanted. Rigid, ice-cold, and a stickler for the rules, Seong-Jae Yoon is a watchful presence whose obstinacy and unpredictability constantly remind Malcolm why he prefers to work alone. Seong-Jae may be stunningly attractive, a man who moves like a graceful, lethal bird of prey...but he's as impossible to decipher as this case.

And if Malcolm doesn't find the key to unravel both in time, another vulnerable young victim may end up dead.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Baltimore homicide detective Malcolm Khalaji has his own way of doing things: quiet, methodical, logical, effective, not always particularly legal. He’s used to working alone—and the last thing he needs is a new partner ten years his junior.

Especially one like Seong-Jae Yoon.

Icy. Willful. Detached. Stubborn. Seong-Jae is all that and more, impossible to work with and headstrong enough to get them both killed…if they don’t kill each other first. Foxlike and sullen, Seong-Jae’s disdainful beauty conceals a smoldering and ferocious temper, and as he and Malcolm clash the sparks between them build until neither can tell the difference between loathing and desire.

But as bodies pile up at their feet a string of strange, seemingly unrelated murders takes a bizarre turn, leading them deeper and deeper into Baltimore’s criminal underworld. Every death carries a dangerous message, another in a trail of breadcrumbs that can only end in blood.

Malcolm and Seong-Jae must combine their wits against an unseen killer and trace the unsettling murders to their source. Together, they’ll descend the darkest pathways of a twisted mind—and discover just how deep the rabbit hole goes. And if they can’t learn to trust each other?

Neither will make it out alive.

Read the first line of the book ... it grabbed me and held on until the very end. The mystery was excellent (although I had an idea of what was going on within 50% of the book, wasn't sure who was behind it and what that person did ... yeah ... extremely messed up but understandable and slightly relatable were I psychotic ... but it's a novel ... read the excerpt at the end of the book that explains why the author wrote it as gritty as he did). The slow burn between the two M/Cs was quite different from any other M/M book I've read (and I've read a lot): it was good to read these men as men (and not facsimiles of women) and see them as good cops, with all the angst, self-loathing and sorrow that job holds (I was raised by a cop, too and recognize their emotions that they do not wear on their sleeves, as most men do not). Although this book is M/M, there is only one kiss towards the end and at that, due to the slow burn, it was amazing. I was very pleased with this novel and am now reading the authors other books (both as Cole McCade and as Xen) ... his work is gritty, tough to read at times (subject matter ... and he does warn viewers at the start of the novel of subject matter that may be touchy), but absolutely wonderful! Most M/M - of all types - I don't remember for long after I've read it: doesn't really move me. This novel will stay with me (as have a few other authors series) ... I'm excited to read the next installment and am glad to see that he's got subsequent novels in this series scheduled for each month. To the author: DO NOT WORRY ABOUT WHAT OTHERS SAY, Cole ... your work is marvelous ... keep it up!! By the way, I hope you're okay ... don't let you get in your own way.

This book was honestly so good. As soon as I started it, it drew me in and I finished it in less than a day. I found the characters, both main, side, and those just here for the episode to all be very interesting.

The two main characters obviously stood out the most, Malcolm Khalaji and Seon-Jae Yoon. Both stubborn in different ways, both jaded lone-wolf types that somehow find common ground, both clearly hiding their own skeletons from the past. I’m eager to see where Season 1 takes them.

There was a lot to enjoy about this books, the plot moves along at a brisk pace and seemed to really mirror the action, twists, and conclusion that one would expect if actually wanting a procedural tv show. That made it easy to get through if you have a few hours to kill on a Sunday or a plane ride. The characters immediately drew you in, as did the case itself.

That’s not to say there weren’t a few rough spots. I found the relationship moved along almost too quickly to say there’s a full season yet to go. They went from hating each other one day to the next being each other’s support system. Not to say they were all that close by the end, but the camaraderie almost seemed to bloom too quickly to say these are both men who keep most people at arm’s length. Yoon also seemed to be a bit of a contradiction in some of his actions toward Khalaji, but I think that’s actually just him.

I also felt that the lead they needed was pretty obvious and overlooked the entire time. I called the killer within almost the first interview and couldn’t figure out why they didn’t pursue such an obvious lead. They seemed very narrow-minded in their interviews which isn’t very realistic at least coming from someone who watches many many different police procedurals and in particular has rewatched much of Criminal Minds, Law and Order SVU, and Chicago PD over the years. However, I’m mostly reading this for the lovely representation of lgbtq and bipoc in the police force. A severely underrepresented minority.

All in all, despite these minor gripes, I honestly adored this so much and cannot wait to dive into more of this series and get to know more about these characters. Cole McCade has gotten me hook, line, and sinker as a devoted new reader!

I can't believe I waited so long to read The Cardigans because it's AMAZING. So beautifully written -- I swear the prose knocked me away -- with a tense, thrilling murder mystery that made me devour this in one sitting because I needed to know what would happen next. We've got an ultimate slowburn romance between two opposites. A mutual mentioned that I might love Yoon and they were right!! A quiet, awkward, stiff, cold INTJ gay Asian with a mysterious past?? That archetype has my name written on it. Then he's paired with Malcolm, a gruff wolfish masculine detective who hides a soft side. I'm so excited to read the series both to experience their slowburn romance AND learn more about the overarching murder mystery. As soon as I finished reading, the intro song from Yellowjackets started playing in my head lmao

If you loooove detectives investigating serial killer TV shows and wished they had a slowburn gay romance then this book is for you!!

Damn. I'm still in shock. I don't know what I expected, when I bought this book, I just know that I basically inhaled it, and now I'm hungry for more. The first episode of "Criminal Intentions" got everything a good crime book needs: Complex and authentic characters, realistic police work, great storyline - and all of that combined with a wonderful style of writing. The amount of details describing feelings, persons or situations (= crime scenes) is just right to get the perfect idea of what's going on - there are a lot, but not too many. Whats happening is beyond messed up and really upsetting, and the way psychological backround knowledge is included, the explanations for why people do, what they do, makes it all very authentic. Not less gruesome, of course, but authentic. I also liked the slow burn a lot. It's realistic and highly different from various other queer-romance-books, in which it doesn't even take 10 pages for the main characters to have very explicit sex. "The Cardigans" clearly focuses on the crime storyline, revealing a few glimpses of an upcoming romance, and it's good that way. I'm so excited for what's to come!

I’m not one for reading detective novels. I find them a bit samey and find the solving of the crime the main feature of the book rather than the characters and the plot.

When I heard Cole McCade was writing a detective series, I knew I had to read it because I love his writing. I’m not going to be cheesy cliché and say I would read his shopping list, because that’s just stupid, it’s a shopping list! I would, though like to study his bookshelves. What does that man read to give him such a wide expanse of knowledge and skill to go from writing a sweet romantic book like A Second Chance At Paris to the gruesome story in The Cardigans?

I love the way Cole McCade writes. His books are full of rich descriptions, perfectly capturing tiny nuances that make my heart sing. I totally get my geek on when I’m reading his books, he’s a modern day Emile Zola, heavy on description, with real characters and a plot that packs a meaty punch.

Detectives, Malcolm Khalaji is teamed with Seong-Jae Yoon to solve the hideous murder of a popular, young gay man. Malcolm isn’t a stereotypical older cop; he’s not jaded with an attitude that the world owes him. He cares, he’s respectful and always thinks of the pain and loss of those who know the victims of crimes. Seong-Jae is an enigma. Deep thinking and reflective, his relationship or the building of the relationship with Malcolm is a definite strong feature of the book for me.

It’s an exceptionally good read. Strong stomach required!
