Cumberland Sausage Shocker: Albert Smith's Culinary Capers Recipe 6 Kindle Edition
On the trail of a master criminal, a retired detective and his former police dog expect a quiet time in the Cumbrian village of Keswick. However, when Rex picks up a scent upon arriving at their B&B …
… the discovery of a body in a shallow grave draws them into a mystery someone does not want solved.
With help from a local amateur sleuth and her dog, our mystery-busting duo set out to investigate two cases at the same time. Along the way they’ll identify a host of possible suspects and have to answer some big questions: Who stood to gain from the victim’s death? Was it revenge or greed that motivated the killer? Just how many sausages can a German Shepherd eat in one sitting?
As they battle to reveal the truth, it’s clear someone is working to cover it up and if they don’t figure this out in time, someone might not live to see another day. In their most deadly adventure yet, can Rex and Albert sniff out the clues?
The answer will be shocking! ‘
There is one thing I have learned, and it is this: never underestimate Steve’s ability to weave a mystery tale that makes you feel nervous for the heroes one minute, then has you crying with laughter the next.’
‘I am yet to read any of his books in more than one sitting. I just cannot put them down!’

About the author

When Steve Higgs wrote his debut novel, Paranormal Nonsense, he was a captain in the British Army. He would like to pretend that he had one of those careers that must be blacked out and generally denied by the government, and that he has to change his name and move constantly because he is still on the watch list in several countries. In truth, though, he started out as a mechanic - not like Jason Statham in the film by that name, sneaking around as a hitman, but more like one of those sleazy guys who charges a fortune and keeps your car for a week even though the only thing you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.
At school, he was largely disinterested in all subjects except creative writing, for which he won his first prize at the age of ten. However, calling it the first prize he won suggests that there were other prizes, which is not the case. Awards may yet come, but in the meantime, he enjoys writing mystery and thriller novels and claims to have more than a hundred books forming a restless queue in his mind because they are desperate to be written.
Now retired from the military, he lives in southeast England with a duo of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, he doubts he'll ever leave, the beer is just too good.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2023This series keeps getting better and this, the sixth installment was excellent and is my favourite so far, tied with the fourth one.
In pursuit of the gastrothief mystery, Albert and Rex end up in Cumbria, where the famous Cumberland sausage is made. When the inevitable bodies start popping up, they team with local amateur sleuth Jacqueline and her ex-police dog Maggie, to solve the crimes.
I love how the characters of Albert and Rex gain more depth and how their love and understanding of each other grow and deepen.
The side characters introduced in each book are also fun and not just one-note plot fillers. The mysteries are usually intriguing enough to keep you wondering.
And the food descriptions are drool-worthy! I also love the short history of each book's center dish at the end.
Highly recommended! On to the next adventure.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2025Another adventure with Albert and Rex. Fun characters and keeping with the story thread.....find myself keeping my eyes open for clues. This one had a twist that surprised me.... Keeping it fresh!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2024Albert and Rex make the perfect sleuthing pair if you are looking for lightweight and humorous storytelling. This one features Rex in gastronomic distress and Albert teaming up with an amateur sleuth who also happens ton have a retired police dog as a companion. What starts out as a cautious inquiry regarding the alleged Gastrothief turns into a multiple murder investigation forthwith!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2025I cried at the end. Rex is so wonderful and the suspense is amazing!! I loved this book and recommend to anyone.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2024My husband and I are both enjoying this series. It is fun, well written, and full of twists, turns and a peak into Albert and Rex's great adventures in beautiful English Villages.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2023This was an excellent story. There was intrigue, humor, and was written from a dog's perception. That was hilarious to read. The dog was trying to make his human understand that he could smell the clues, but his human was not paying attention to him. When his human did listen to him he jumped for joy. Finally, the mystery was solved! But it almost caused his human his life. These stories are an absolute joy to read. Anyone who likes mysteries where animals are included would love his books.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2021Albert and Rex visit Keswick. A master sausage maker and his machine suddenly went missing a month ago. However, another case comes first.
Rex finds the body of Sarah Fountain buried in the garden of his hotel. Then Raith River is killed. Both worked in the Cumberland Sausage Factory.
He meets amatuer sleuth Jacqueline and her elderly German shepherd Maggie, and the 2 investigators work together on the murders.
The case quickly turns deadly for Albert and Jaqueline. Can Rex save them from the killer?
Such a great series. And Rex thinks Albert's training is coming along nicely.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2024As always, I am a Steve Higgs fan!! Thanks for these clever, entertaining stories about Albert and his dog Rex.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good story but nothing like Keswick!
I love the Albert and Rex books. Each new story is different from the one before. The storyline and process of sorting through the clues to work out who committed the crime are all there to be found. I love the "voice" of Rex, Albert's German Shepherd, who used to be a police dog. He is very funny and his interactions with others - animal or human - are very funny. I've read all the books now, but I struggled a bit with this one because I live near Keswick (in the Lake District) and it's far from being a "village" as described - it's a very busy market town and a major tourist destination, usually crammed with visitors to the area. The author has picked up a few local street names and a couple of other places nearby to add a bit of authenticity, but on the whole I found the inaccuracy frustrating (even allowing for the author's imagination) and found myself wanting to correct the way of life depicted here, street names, places, etc. and it distracted me from the story! I wonder if people living in Arbroath, Dundee or Bedford for example, other destinations for Albert and Rex, had the same problem. Having said that, Albert and Rex are as always determined to get to the bottom of things and the book itself is well worth reading. Very happy to see a new book is being published in January 2022.

Have read most of the Albert and Rex books. They are all inconceivable but totally delightful. I particularly liked this book because Rex’s antics made me laugh. I loved the recipes at the end of the books and have tried several. Read, laugh and enjoy
