- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe power dynamics of the pairings in her works are always beautifully written, which is a factor that draws me to them over others. Not only does Ms Owens understand the complexities of trust involved in genuine BDSM relationships, but her grasp of the struggles inherent in even severe mental disorders such as PTSD give even this standalone novel a compelling story that is both relative and immersive. The formulation of the pair's bond out of exploration of homosexual BDSM between a fixed partner and one in denial all in the pursuit of healing each other through their traumatic experiences is both wrenching as much as inspiring. The title, while symbolic of both men's state of mind and the basis of their union, offers an underlying message of hope at the end that as damaged as we may be, we still have a chance for happiness with someone. For those readers avidly devouring Ms Owens' Sin City series or lovers of accurately conveyed BDSM relationships, I highly recommend adding this standalone to your library. As always, the synopsis pulls the reader in and her skill in the story itself does not disappoint.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhen his partner is killed, Jack needs to get away. Crushed under the guilt that it was his fault. He lands in a casino in the middle of nowhere, ran by a beautiful enigmatic man. Brant sees behind Jack’s facade to the hurting, damaged man inside. Through a series of encounters Jack learns to let his demons go, possibly releasing Brant’s at the same time.
This book was engrossing, the characters very charismatic. Their encounters graphic, without being to far over the top. The men meshed very well and were likable even tho they were kind of grouchy and closed off. Watching them open up to each other was sweet.
I really wish the secrets of the casino and the forest had been delved into further. They were just kind dropped after a few intriguing hints.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTricia Owens shocked me with this book. It is original and very unique. I can’t think of anything similar. It also lured me in and kept me emotionally hostage the entire time. The author really knows how to elicit strong feelings because my heart felt like it was being torn apart during this read.
The character development was intense. I felt for the two main characters so much, to the point I wish I could have walked right into the pages. That is the sign of an excellent book. There was definitely some amazing chemistry as well. The world building was eerily vivid.
This is not a story that is easy to describe. However, I can say it is one that is powerful. It kept me so engaged I didn’t even realize time slipped away until I got to the end. Don’t go into the book expecting ordinary. It’s way more than that.
5 stars for a hauntingly emotive read.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhile I found Brandt and Jack to be very hot, I was a bit disturbed by Brandt's method of opening up to Jack. His actions, in leading Jack to his home, we're reckless and certainly not safe, or really even sane. What would he have done if Jack didn't come? What would he have done if Jack the sub that he seemed to be? I'm all for the Grand Gesture, but this one sort of ruined the book for me because I kept thinking of all of the ways that it should have gone horribly wrong.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseJack is on leave from his job as a detective after the fatal shooting of his partner. Jack blames himself for his partner's death and goes to The Lightning Gulch Casino with the hope of either finding redemption or losing himself completely.
Brant is the manager of The Lightning Gulch Casino. He's a man who controls everything around him and has plenty of secrets that he keeps closely guarded. He runs the casino with a firm hand and doesn't let anyone get close.
When Brant and Jack meet there is a definite tension between them but it's hard to tell what they will do because they are both so close lipped and strong willed. I wasn't sure how dark this book would get with the BDSM, the guilt of losing not just a partner but a friend, and how the threat of the forest seemed to always be there waiting in the background. In the end while dealing with dark issues I came away feeling that it didn't cross any lines where there seemed to be no hope or where the story was dragged down by the pain both mcs were feeling.
Brant and Jack both question their connection and what they want from it. I didn't feel like anything they did was something either of them didn't embrace or take satisfaction from. They each made choices during their encounters and no one was forced to do anything they didn't want or that felt nonconsensual in any way. Brant and Jack are both wonderful men and as you get to know them you can't help wanting their relationship to work and for them to be able to see past the pain they each carry to a brighter future. Highly recommend this book but heed trigger warnings.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the kind of BDSM that might make you uncomfortable, but is so deliciously sexy that you can’t wait to see what happens next. Well written, with a setting that is almost another character in the book. Short, but complete with fully written characters and an edge of your seat plot. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI've read several other stories by this author but this is by far my favorite. It's an excellent book about two people trying to heal and the story has a bit of a paranormal aspect. The book is a stand-alone with no cliffhanger which makes me happy. I dislike serials.

Damaged by Tricia Owens is the tale of two damaged men finding redemption in each others arms. This book tore me up as I hurt for them each. This book will take you to some very dark places but it does have a happy ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really liked this story. It was different from any thing else I've read. I'm sure other review question the ethics of the BDSM and the psychological side of it, but as a hot read, it did it's job

4.0 out of 5 stars New to me
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA new to me author, this book was offered free. It was intense and dark in places, with both main characters battling demons. Lots of angst and emotion, breakdowns and soul searching, however there was a satisfying ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5* A very intense & kinky read...although, not one of my faves from TO.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI am a fan of this author and especially her BDSM tales, so I one clicked this as soon as it was available, and while I can’t say I loved it, I did enjoy aspects of it. Both Jack and Brant are pretty broken/damaged but overall decent men who I liked yet somehow didn’t find myself fully invested in if I’m entirely honest.
For a novella-length book there’s decent character growth and a sufficient backstory regarding their past traumas that’s led to the bleak place their currently in - figuratively and literally - and yet I felt there was a barrier preventing me from completely believing in their relationship. Possibly it’s ‘cause it felt somewhat rushed. As no sooner had they met at the casino and exchanged a few passive aggressive comments, then it’s off to dinner together which quickly culminates in a very rough n’ dirty BDSM scene which I would’ve had no probs with if this’d all transpired over several days or even a week, but moving at warp speed like this made it feel unrealistic. Not to mention there were no safewords used, which for a total newbie to both gay sex and kink like Jack was, again, just didn’t ring true for me.
This isn’t a lighthearted, fluffy tale, but neither is it what I consider a dark read. In short, it’s a pretty intense one that involves past domestic violence (mildly referenced), survivors guilt/PTSD, and Jack’s own sexual awakening and eventual self-acceptance. The kink scenes are blinding hot - no surprise there, TO can write the hell out of a sex scene - esp that bathtub scene which involved erotic asphyxiation with again, no safeword or signal, which some could find a tad extreme…but I personally floved ❤️
So, after a near emotional breakdown, particularly for Jack, both men regain their direction and equilibrium via not only the power of domination and submission, but primarily through addressing their respective guilt and fears. There is a sweet and satisfying epilogue for these two, that I’m pleased to reveal felt overall more organic and therefore believable. In all, a good but not great read for me.
