Darkchapel (Sergeant Guidonis Book 1) Kindle Edition
Three women have been brutally murdered in Whitechapel, but this is not London in the 1880s, this is the present day.
The media are in a frenzy over a new 'Jack The Ripper' stalking the streets of the East End and the Metropolitan Police investigation, Operation Darkchapel, is overwhelmed with suspects and forensic evidence. However, they have nothing leading to the killer.
More officers are recruited to the investigation, but two new sergeants are unwelcome. Sergeant ‘Gui’ Guidonis is erratic, unconventional, and has a hidden past. Sergeant Markus Inglefield, once a high-flying Superintendent, was demoted to sergeant shortly after he first worked with Gui. No one knows why. Sergeant Kirstin Toogood is assigned as their babysitter. She had hoped working on the high-profile investigation would leapfrog her career and lead to promotion.
Instead, the seemingly twisted minds of Gui and Markus doggedly follow unorthodox lines of inquiry and drag her into a world the rich and powerful try to hide. Soon Toogood's hopes of just keeping her job look as dead as the Ripper’s victims.
Will this new Ripper be uncovered? And what will be the cost?

About the author

Educated at Durham and Oxford, Viktor Slater worked in the technology sector, for government clients.
He lives in Berkshire, with his wife, children and dog. Growing up, he was surrounded by books, as both parents were avid readers.
His mother was a big fan of Agatha Christie and Nagio Marsh, and today Viktor likes nothing better than a good mystery.
When not writing, or being a husband and father, he likes motor racing, and the solitude of a round of golf; a good time to plot the next book!

- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2015This is a very convoluted and interesting mystery. I'm not sure that Detective Sergeant Guidonis, otherwise known as DS Gui, could exist within the Metropolitan Police in London but he's definitely entertaining! Gui is a strange duck, almost totally non-social, a true detective who isn't bound by rules and regulations—let alone his superiors—but also brilliant! He walks a totally different path... and takes you down it quite nicely!
The mystery is just that, a total mystery! Three prostitutes have been murdered in Whitechapel, the stalking grounds of Jack the Ripper, and the press is up in arms. The traditional coppers aren't getting anywhere with who the Ripper 2.0 is and then DS Gui is assigned, much to the disgust of the lead detective.
From the time DS Gui appears what begins as a typical British who-done-it goes off into the wilderness. Because DS Gui and his two coherts—DS Toogood and DS Inglefield—go off on their own and from then on there are so many twists, turns and several very nice red-herrings drawn across the trail, that there's no way to guess who the totally unexpected, and yet thoroughly understandable, killer actually is until the very end when everything is very tidyingly wrapped up.
I didn't expect to enjoy this book but, despite the fact that the entire thing is double spaced in my Kindle Paperwhite (which annoys me) and that the table of contents is more than a little strange, I ended up eagerly reading it! It is, quite simply, good and has surprisingly few editorial problems for an Indie book. It's well worth a read.
I'm just sorry that the author hasn't added to the adventures of DS Gui and his sidekicks because I want more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant read that kept me hooked
I chose to read this book as it sounded a bit different to the crime novels I’ve read in the past. I’m familiar with the areas of London that are mentioned so it was great to visualise them as the author described the three detectives visiting the crime scenes. I tried the kindle sample and was intrigued straight away.
I usually get bored with fiction, I’m a big reader of non fiction, self development etc, so it has to be a really good book to draw me in and keep me engrossed . This book did just that.
I really liked the characters of the three detectives and enjoyed the two who were rebellious but also very clever at the same time.
The storyline was interesting, had good pace and I just had to find out who did it. I read the book pretty quickly and really enjoyed it. So much so I have now purchased the second book by Viktor Slater and I’m already enjoying that too. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys a good crime fiction to relax with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
I've read all three of the books in the Sgt Gui series and have enjoyed them immensely. I'm surprised that these books don't have hundreds more positive reviews! Excellent writing and storytelling, I hope that this series continues with many more books to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sergeant Gui is no one's fool
I really liked this book and having the three detectives is different to anything I had read before.
The Jack the Ripper brought up to modern times has been done before, I know, but this is a very different slant on the killings, rather than just a modern day copycat. In fact the whole story is different to any other detective stories I have read in a long time. The main detective, Sergeant Gui, is not the normal modern detective with a ream of personal problems and baggage. He just wants to get on with solving the murders and getting justice for the victims. And he doesn’t care who he upsets to find the truth, in fact he likes upsetting people!
All in all Darkchapel kept me reading and wanting to find out what happened next right up until the last page.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Far from elementary"
Typically British with its own particular idiosyncrasies. The Ripper story never seems to known when the time's up. This modern twist breathes new life into the well-known tale and the characters of Gui and Markus are tailor-made for a transfer to the TV screen. The writing style won't be to everyone's taste and there are occasional typos, but this is a character-driven story and DS Toogood joins the two eccentric misfits to form a terrific trio of crime solvers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Right up my Street
I adore London based crime thrillers & this fitted the bill exactly as a modern day version of Jack The Ripper. The detective characters were quite unorthodox but very intriguing too and with a touch of dark humour. I hope to find more books like this. Murders, London, Great Characters, Police Procedural & Guessing till the end... all equals Book Heaven!!
