We’ve all had them, those special dates with someone brand new, someone who just might be the yin to our yang, that vital missing piece of our lonely heart…

But, for some, that potential soulmate can very quickly become the Devil in disguise, and, boy howdy, how attractive and inherently deceitful those nefarious facades can be!
Here, we deliver for your delectation twenty-one such tales - read them with caution, and thank all that is heavenly it’s not you on these particular Dates from Hell…

About the authors
My book's include Highway Twenty, which appeared on the Preliminary Ballot for the 2019 Bram Stoker Award, the bestselling post-apocalyptic novel, After the Change, which is used as curriculum at the University of Washington, Secret Harbor, Cinema 7, and the middle grade horror series, Nightmares in Aston. My work has received awards, has appeared in various anthologies, journals, newspapers (e.g. The Huffington Post) and magazines (e.g. The Nation and Business Insider), on television (with acclaimed newsman, Carlos Watson, Ludacris, and KPIX5), and has been adapted for theatres, including Open Door Playhouse and PEN America. I’ve also written for the Horror Writers Association, and was an active member for years.
Carlton Herzog publishes supernatural horror, science fiction and crime stories, as well as non-ficiton. His fiction portrays characters who are outsiders to ordinary life. Filled with strange terrors and brutal absurdities, his writing bends reality until it cracks. He is a USAF veteran with B.A. magna cum laude and J.D. from Rutgers. He served as Articles Editor of the Rutgers Law Review.
He had this to say about writing: “Writing is to the mind what exercise is to the body. I love the process from start to finish. Editorial acceptance, monetary remuneration, and public approval are nothing when compared with the irreplaceable feeling of personal accomplishment. Writing is a stroll through the insubstantial country of my mind. A land where I can see reflections of myself that are more me than anything I can find in a mirror or the eyes of others. it is an introcosm where I am truly free to see what I have done and yet may do, home to all my disappointments and discoveries, rememberings and reveries."

- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2021Some moments in Dates From Hell are incredibly well crafted. Others evoke internal discussions on the nature of humanity. Some are witty and fun. Others blindsided me with right hooks. Still others are bone-chilling descents into madness. I loved each and every moment, and could ask for nothing more from a short story compilation. Well done!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2021The authors WOWED me. The stories are incredible. You have a bit of everything in this anthology, and that is what you want. You want each story to be unique and have its own tale and not be mundane. This anthology did just that. Definitely recommend this!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2021This anthology has some amazing stories ranging from macbre to almost sweet and some just plan weird. All together a great anthology and would definitely recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2022This is a collection of well written spooky short stories. I enjoyed it!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2021This book is terrifying. I am a huge fan of the horror genre.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2022I enjoy a good themed anthology occasionally, and Dates from Hell was very impressive. Out of the 21 stories there were only 3 that I didn't care for, but 18/21 means mostly hits. There is a great mix of stories compiled and edited by Theresa Scott-Matthews who picked some real gems. These aren't all human type bad romances either. There is monster horror, a lovecraftian style horror, a fantastic Japanese horror that felt like something coming from Junji Ito, and even a universal monsters twist in what happens to be my favorite story in the book. I won't go over all 21 stories, but here are my 5 favorites: the mean girl by Michael J. Moore, Alpha Male by Adam Bell, slriG, slriG, slriG by W.P. Johnson, the girl who loved Senpai by Scott McGregor , and The monster that resides within by Scarlett Lake, which was my my favorite. This collection makes a perfect choice for a Valentine's Day read. I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2021Dates from Hell does what it promises by carrying out its very premise--to reach deep and rip out your heart for the pure love of horror. Most stories reflect dark themes, supported by tight but descriptive writing on a variety of topics from the creative to--yes--including long walks on the beach, where some stories take place. Although you may be hesitant to read a book that may lend itself to being classified as "romance," fret not--the only gushy feelings here are blood between the fingers of the numerous and creative characters. An excellent addition to the already impressive HBB collection.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2021I enjoyed this anthology for two reasons. First, as a reader, I found it contains well written, entertaining, and imaginative stories curated by a deft hand. Notable examples are The Mean Girl, Wears Heart on a Rope, and the Monster That Resides Within. Second, as an aging moralist, I found the stories relatable because they speak to our common worst fears. They reiterate the need to be cautious about letting anyone into my life who sends up even the tiniest red flag. In my sixty-five years, I have learned the hard way that just because someone is nice at first doesn't mean they are worth my time. More importantly, in this let’s hop in the sack and get attached at the hip culture, loneliness is nothing more than a lack of direction. And consider that divorce rates in this country are 50%. If you strapped on a parachute, and right before you jumped, the jumpmaster said,” By the way, the chutes only open half the time” would you still be eager to jump?
