Daybreak (Vino and Veritas) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 1,338 ratings

When a sunny young musician gets stranded with a grumpy mechanic during a snowstorm, a lack of heat is the least of their problems…

Liam Luckett is on an adventure. He's dropped out of his Master's program without telling his overbearing parents and set off on a road trip across the country. Armed with little more than his guitar, he’s looking for his best life. He never expected his car to break down in the middle of nowhere Vermont with a huge storm pending, leaving him stranded and at the mercy of a hunky local mechanic.

Jasper Cunningham is in a holding pattern. Three years after the death of his husband, he still hasn’t moved on. A hot, younger, stranded tourist is exactly the sort of complication this mechanic has been avoiding. But he can’t leave the guy in the snow. He brings Liam home to crash on the couch. The air is heavy with more than snow, and when the power goes out, the two men become closer than either of them expects.

Every silken note Liam sings on that guitar thaws Jasper’s heart a little. Suddenly, Liam’s itchy feet aren’t so eager to move on. When their feelings get too big to ignore, the bond they’ve formed is tested. Will daybreak leave them going their separate ways?

This opposites attract, hurt/comfort romance features a grumpy widower who is only soft for one specific blue-eyed musician, a remote farmhouse, a friendly dog, and enough snow to knock the power out until love catches fire.

healing and love
I dove into Daybreak by Kate Hawthorne the minute I learned the widower Jesper from Unguarded got his happy in this one. In Unguarded the reader meets Jesper as Emmett's friend and client as he brings his sick dog to Emmett's veterinarian clinic... but no worries at ALL this book is easily read standalone.. As the blurb reveals Jasper Cunningham is a widower who lost his husband and is well sort of stuck... that is until he meets Liam Luckett who just traveling through Vermont in search or well...... the reader learns in search of a way to be himself. Liam is a man finding his way in the world, breaking away from his father and the closet he wants to put Liam in. This book is about loss and healing and love... finding that love when you don't expect it... and being brave enough to grab a hold of it; even at the risk of being hurt again. I am so happy I took a chance on this new-to-me author as Jesper and Liam's story was so beautiful. Burlington, Vermont acts as another character in this book and helps craft a world that pulls the reader into this world. Daybreak is set in the Vino and Veritas world and I have loved so many of these stories!

I was so very happy to see Jasper get his HEA after meeting him in Emmett’s story. Loved Jasper and Liam! They both had their own demons to overcome and I was happy to see them find their way.

I got through this book really fast and it was long enough for what it offers but I didn't really feel I saw enough of these men to really get behind a relationship. As usual with these instalove situations there's just some "unexplained" attraction that is supposed to mitigate the almost complete lack of communication and actual relationship aspects that didn't really happen here. Why sleeping on the couch and having meals together for a week inspired deep love is completely unclear here
It feels like the third book in a row I've read where one of the characters is grumpy and mostly unpleasant to the other, and then basic human decency is treated like an amazing gesture.
In a way it feels like Liam mostly fell in love with Gus the dog and Jasper's house and with Jasper as a side effect

I've read this author before. I listened to the audiobook. This is book 12 of the spin off series of the Vino & Veritas world. This is a mm contemporary story of local widower Jasper and out of towner Liam. Liam is escaping his collage and his dominating senator father. His car breaks down in Vermont and he ends up at the Bar Vino & Veritas. The bartender calls Jasper at local mechanic, to help. The two characters have a lot to work through, but they find happiness in the end.

    Widower
    Forced proximity
    Kinda instalove

Liam finds himself breaking down in Vermont on his cross country road trip. Walks in to a bar. Sounds like the setup to a joke but instead he meets a hot mechanic.

Jasper has been a widower for 3 years. And the day he meets Liam just so happened to be the same day he threw out the sheets his husband had picked out. And realized maybe he was ready to move on.

Jasper and Liam’s relationship felt natural but I wish we could’ve had more communication. It felt like it wasn’t enough of them together. There is a lot they don’t want to tell each other at first. And then it’s time for Liam to go back to California. When he gets home he realizes he left his home and heart back in Vermont.

    It’s very low angst.

Just like the previous books, Daybreak is a sweet love story. This one is a little sadder tho.

Jasper lost his husband three years ago and he still hasn't moved on.
    He isn't living, barely surviving.
So the attraction he feels toward the young stranger he "rescued" surprise and scare him.
But staying away from Liam seems impossible...

I have to admit that even if i liked the story, i didn't really feel involved.
I didn't really feel the love between the two of them.
    I didn't feel the sparkles.

I guess my mood has something to do with that... so don’t take this "review" too seriously. Give the book a chance and let me know what you think about it.

I just finished reading Daybreak, and I am in love!

There's just something about this story that hit my heart in all the right places and kept me engaged till the very last place.

Liam reminds me a lot of myself, stuck somewhere he didn't want to be. I could relate to him and smile with him as he found a home in Jasper.

And oh Jasper. My heart was hurting from the very first page when he was introduced. His pain was written so well that I could feel myself hurt for him. And so to see him find happiness in Liam was heartwarming.

I absolutely adored gus too! And Devon and Tai and everyone else that was introduced. The main characters had an earth shattering chemistry and the dialogues were heart wrenching yet beautiful.

Overall I was thoroughly entertained while reading this. Highly recommended to any MM lover!

I've read a few from this series, not in any order, just the ones that grabbed me. I recall two of the side characters in this one being the main couple in one that I'd read. This was a wonderful tale, sweet, saucy, and a little frustrating at times with the most unlikely, mismatched pair ever. But, that beginning!! It's a hard, painful read, for those of us who have lost our partner suddenly it's raw and blunt, and tears at the heart, a tough start to a lovely tale.

Jasper is comfortable being lonely and miserable, thinking his days of fun are over. He didn’t count on meeting Liam, someone who can’t quit. Being stuck together for a week is just long enough to change both their lives in a way they both denied could happen. Great HEA.

Jasper and Liam are a little broken, a little lost but on a journey to be whole and finding themselves.
    Slow burn, poignant, and sweet.
