The Big Man Upstairs: A DCI Logan Novel (DCI Logan Crime Thrillers Book 7) Kindle Edition
Burdened by guilt over the trauma recently inflicted on his friends and colleagues, former-Detective Chief Inspector Jack Logan has spent the past nine months living in self-imposed exile.
When a mother and her young daughter are the victims of a double murder staged to look like suicide, Logan is dragged back to help hunt down and catch a brutal, calculating killer.
But the world has moved on without him. To do what needs to be done, Logan must first find his place among old friends and new enemies before the killer strikes again, and a whole Highland community tears itself apart.
Maybe early retirement wasn't such a bad idea, after all...
The Big Man Upstairs is the seventh novel in the internationally bestselling DCI Jack Logan Scottish crime fiction series, and perfect for fans of Ian Rankin, Val McDermid, and Stuart MacBride.

About the author

JD Kirk lives in the Highlands of Scotland with his wife, two children, and a number of sturdy umbrellas. He also doesn't exist. JD is, in fact, the pen name of award-winning author, comic book writer and screenwriter, Barry Hutchison, who also, coincidentally, lives in the Highlands with his wife, two children, and the aforementioned umbrellas.
He has no idea what the 'JD' bit stands for.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2022I’m going hell bent through these books that my Mums made a comment to me that even though they’re digital & cheaper than a printed book, there still a cost I can’t always afford, but I also made a comment to express that if she got in between and these books… well, she might find herself playing lead roll in the next book, and I don’t mean portraying a cop…
Other than that the book/s are great, a few bits here & there which means striking off a star, but still 4 is pretty darn good to keep me this interested . If you’ve not read him, start with book 1 and make sure you have book two ready to go, as you’ll want it to be.
Cheers to the author for my new best friends & please keep them coming!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2021Very much enjoying this series with Logan and the gang......however, I have just one criticism and that is for top notch police officers, they are a bit slow off the mark on some of the clues.....e.g. in this book I was all over Trip Advisor as soon as it was mentioned by the Rev.....but it took Forde and the rest many more pages and fruitless activities before someone realised 'oh yeah, wonder if she left a review...and perhaps a name?'. Perhaps this was by design to build up the tension a bit more, but to me (as just a reader and one time special constable) it looked a little tardy. Small point and by no means a spoiler for the series, which I have lined up on my Kindle and will shortly pre-order No.10.

Themes beyond / deeper than simple murder mysteries. This is an excellent series. [Book 7 of 18.] Has moved beyond larger grotesque focus that could move the books from mystery/thriller to horror category.
4.5☆s rounds up! Rarely give 5 ☆s to murder mysteries. This, with the power of its series, gets there. Here's hoping the series will continue in this 4-5☆ range!
[Audiobook narration remains excellent. Great Kindle Unlimited read / series.]
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2021I have read all the preceding novels in this series, which all had lots of enjoyable twists and turns. This one, however, was too predictable. At least regarding who was the main culprit. I also feel that the gallery of police characters has become a bit too static, especially as regards the younger officers in the team. This is not a bad novel, mind, but I hope the next ones in the series will regain some of the dynamics in the first novels. Which means that I haven't given up this author and this series. We'll see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read
Excellent read as with all the rest of the books in this series. Enjoyable and fast moving from the first page. The dry humour also makes this series a joy to read. Can't wait to read the next one

5.0 out of 5 stars Jack Logan is back
Yet another great story, the charachters are very believable, the writing witty a great storyline with lots of twists and turns. If you have missed the previous stories, start with A Litter Of Bones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great read...
I have read this series twice through and am always excited for the next book. This new one has not disappointed. I love the characters, who become quite real to you. The story is well done and keeps you guessing but has a logical conclusion and a surprise I wasn't expecting. I continue to appreciate the sense of humour interspersed throughout a serious investigation as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars I JUST CANT GET ENOUGH
I have been reading the DCI Logan series non stop all week and i have found myself shivering with suspense, roaring with laughter and crying with emotion. Not a classy snooty style of writing, but It has a definite earthiness about It that keeps you coming back for More. All the books in the series aré 5 star ratings for me.
